Last year, our goal was $36, and our parishioners donated $37,833.00, surpassing our goal! Which meant no parish funds were needed to be sent to the diocese to fulfill our obligation. This year our goal is $37, As of Monday May 19 th, $23,507 has been pledged by our parishioners. We are at 62% of our goal! If you haven t made your pledge yet, please consider doing so to help us reach our goal again this year. 3 This weekend as we celebrate Memorial Day we prepare to celebrate our annual mass at St. Michael s cemetery. Each year this is a moving parish event where hundreds gather to remember their loved ones, those buried at St. Michael s and those buried elsewhere. We read the names of all those whose funerals where at our parish; we honor them and pray for all those who have lost their lives in defense of our country. Every year when I celebrate this Mass, I have many flashbacks of the times I have stood at open graves during the past year, in snow, rain, sleet, freezing temperatures as well as the blazing heat of summer. So many faces and names come back to me. It all becomes part of my own prayer for those who have died, and for their surviving loved ones. It is a powerful reminder of the communion of the saints and the great gift we celebrate during the Easter Season, the gift of the Resurrection. We hope that many of you will join us on Monday at 9 a.m. Bring your own lawn chair if you wish and don t forget the bug spray!! Since I have been here we have had beautiful weather; however in case of rain, the Mass will be celebrated in the upper church. It is amazing that the month of May is rolling to an end. Soon we will be in the midst of summer and a more relaxed pace. We look forward to welcoming our African priest. Although I have received confirmation that someone is coming, I have received no further details. I will let you know as soon as I do. HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY! HUDSON, MA Fr. Ron s Ramblings Este fim de semana ao celebrar-mos o Memorial day nos preparamos para celebrar a missa anual no cemitério de São Miguel. A cada ano é m emocionante evento para a paróquia onde centenas de pessoas se juntam para relembrar e recordar os seus entes queridos os que estão sepultados no nosso cemitério e em outros cemiterios tambem.os nomes dos falecidos dos funerais da nossa paróquia serãao lidos. Nós honramos e oramos por todos os que deram a vida em defesa da nossa pátria. Em cada ano quando celébro esta missa me fáz recordar os tempos em que estive diante de uma sepultura aberta durante o ano com neve, chuva, graniso e com as temperaturas congelantes, como tambem o escaldar do Verão quente. Muitas caras e nomes vêm-me à memória. Tudo faz parte das minhas próprias orações por todos que morreram e pelos seus familiares que ainda vivem. É um poderoso reviver da comunhão dos Santos e um excelente presente que celebrá-mos durante a época da Páscoa; a prenda da ressurreição. Esperamos que muitos de vós estejam presentes connosco na Segunda-feira de manhã às 9 horas. Tragam as suas próprias cadeiras se preferem e não se esqueçam da lata do mata mosquitos. Desde que estou aqui na paróquia, temos tido sempre bom tempo, mas em caso de chuva a missa cerá celebrada na igreja de cima. É incrivel como o mês de Maio se aproxima do fim tão rápidamente e em pouco tempo estaremos com o Verão à porta e com ritmo relaxante. Nós nos preparamos para receber o padre africano. Ja recebi noticias que algum padre esté para vir, mas ultimamente nao recebi mais detalhes. Vos deixarei saber logo que receba mais noticias. Que Deus vos abencoe. Assim seja!!! 4 Religious Education Gr K-5 Sports activities and thoughts of summer are on everyone s mind! We can honor requests if you get them in early along with the registration. Remember that Jesus doesn t take a vacation from you so don t take a vacation from Him. We are presenting a VIRTUS class on June 3 rd from 6:30m-8:30p. This is a required class for those who have signed CORI forms, but especially for all catechists. Please call the office for more info and to sign up. Reminders From St. Michael Cemetery -Walking of pets on grounds is not permitted. -All flowers planted in containers must be within 12" of monument. This includes votive candles, veteran plaques and shrubs. -Plant hangers are not allowed and will be removed. -Crushed stone, wood chips, fences or iron hangers are not allowed. -No planting or decoration in the back of the monument is allowed unless that lot is also yours. -No private contact work with prior permission. -All summer flowers and planters will be removed by October 15th of each year. -All winter decorations will be removed by March 1st of each year. (unless weather prohibits). -Flat markers are to be level with the ground and not improvised to be slanted or an upright marker. -Only one upright stone allowed per lot(s). -Gardens can be no more than 1 foot from base. -No fences. -No borders unless level with ground. -No planting of Arborvitae shrubs or Alberta Spruce. -Shrubs can be no higher than stone. -No trees are to be planted (except by cemetery). -No overloading lots with fake flowers. Any decorations will be removed for overloading a grave. -Shrubs removed cannot be replaced or replanted. -Decorations deemed offensive, in any way, will be removed. As a Catholic cemetery we believe that this is a sacred and holy ground, therefore all grave sites should and will reflect the nature of this holy place. All decoration and articles that do not reflect the sacredness of our Catholic tradition will be removed at the discretion of the cemetery staff. MAY 25, Gentle reminder: Please refrain from bringing food, beverages or chewing gum into our Holy Church, unless it is a medical necessity. Thank you. Poison ivy is widespread! Every spring is an especially good time for growing it, with the cooler temperatures followed by the heavy rains and warm temperatures. It can be found in or surrounding every yard, woods, and wellmaintained garden. Poison sumac and poison oak can be found in similar places. Can you identify the poisons and can you kill them? I have included two excellent sites all about the poisons, showing what they look like and how to identify them. What these sites will tell you is that poison ivy looks different at different times of the year. Most of us look for the three leaves, but should they be red/ purple or yellow/green? Although these are not academic or government sites, they are excellent with ID pictures! Just as important as indentifying the poisons is knowing what to do when you find yourself in it, because you WILL! Remember that the roots are just as bad as the leaves for giving you a rash. Cool water and dish soap is often suggested, it should take off the oils left from the leaves and roots. Wash the tools you used to get rid of it, and maybe the dog that just ran through it, too! How do we get rid of it? The herbicides that are available to kill or control poison ivy are non-selective meaning they will kill/damage any plant that comes into contact with it. These products are very strong, so proceed with caution. They can be very effective, but their poisons may linger for the next plant coming. A far more effective way of controlling poison ivy is to remove it by hand. Mind you, a completely covered hand, arm, leg, etc.and don t scratch yourself! Pull out as much of the plant and roots that you can loosen with a shovel and pruners. Dispose of it in a plastic trash bag, all of it, or throw it back into the woods. Never compost poison ivy, sumac or oak--- the oils last for years. Never burn them! Wash all your tools, gloves, and clothing well. You can use rubbing alcohol on the tools to make sure you get all the oils off. Care must be taken to avoid bumping into one of the poisons this and every summer. We must also take care not to poison too much of our land while trying to rid ourselves of these pesky plants. Have a safe and rash free spring and summer! Make good choices. Put God first in your life. Say a prayer before getting out of bed every morning. Say a prayer every night. Treat others like you would like to be treated. If you love Jesus and obey his commandments, the Holy Spirit will be sent to help you. Prayer Jesus, help me be kind and helpful to my family and friends. Something to Draw Draw yourself saying a prayer before you get out of bed in the morning. Mission for the Week Every morning and every night I will thank God for my family and friends. 6
