3 On this the Fourth and final Sunday in the Advent Season we meet both Mary and Elizabeth in our Gospel reading. These two women demonstrate the meaning and the spirit of this season. Elizabeth who was barren into her old age (probably not that old in today s standards). She was totally surprised by God s intervention in her life. She becomes pregnant with John the Baptist, and thus fulfills her part in God s plan of salvation. Mary, the virgin bride of Joseph likewise becomes pregnant through God intervention. She too is surprised and even perplexed by these unexpected happenings in her life. After the angel tells Mary about Elizabeth, Mary does what most of us would do. She sets out into the hill country (no easy trek by anyone s standards, especially a pregnant woman) to visit with and to find support in their mutual situation. The encounter is a warm, loving connection of two women of deep faith. We can only imagine the embrace and the tears, the relief and the hope which that encounter brought. Yes, Elizabeth acknowledged Mary s faith filled response to God, but Mary did likewise by her very visit and concern. This wonderful gospel story is always the culmination of Advent and ushers in the final days before Christmas. As we continue to prepare our hearts for this coming Friday, may we open our arms in welcome and embrace the newborn king as He is born anew to us this year. Ron s Ramblings 3 Neste quarto e último Domingo do Advento nos encontramos com Maria e Isabel nas leituras do evangelho. Estas duas mulheres representam o espirito desta estação. Isabel que era estéril na sua longa idade (provalvelmente não tão velha assim nos dias de hoje). Deus interviu na sua vida e deulhe uma grande surpresa. Ela ficou grávida para o João Baptista,e assim ela cumpriu a sua parte nos planos de Deus para a salvação. Maria a esposa virgem de José veio a ficar grávida através da intervenção de Deus.Ela tambem foisurpreendida por Deus e até perplexa por estes acontecimentos enesperados na sua vida. Após o anjo anunciar a Maria a respeito de Isabel,Ela fêz o que a maioria de nós teriamos feito. Maria preparase e parte para as montanhas ( Não era uma viagem facil pra ninguem,muito menos para uma mulher grávida)para visitar e dar conforto e ajuda numa situação mutual. O encontro foi um caloroso e amoroso contacto nas duas mulheres de grande fé. Apenas podemos imaginar os abracos e as lágrimas de alegria,o alivio e a esperança que este encontro lhes deu. E assim Isabel reconheceu em Maria a sua grande fé em resposta a Deus. Mas Maria de igual modo reconhceu o misterio de Deus com a sua visita e preocupação. Esta maravilhosa história do evangelho é sempre a culminação do Advento que nos encaminha aos últimos dias antes do Natal. Ao continuarmo nos a preparar os nossos corações para esta próxima Sexta feira,que abramos os nossos braços em boas vindas e abracemos o menino Rei que nasce de novo para nós este ano! The lights will run until December 27, 2015, daily from 5:00pm9:00pm. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served in the Shrine Hall. CLERGY BENEFIT TRUST COLLECTION This Christmas, the collection will support the health and wellbeing of our priests. Our priests have dedicated their lives to serving the Catholic faithful. Now, it is our turn to help fulfill the promises made to care for them in their time of need. 5 HEALTH NOTICE TO ALL PARISHIONERS!!!!!!!!! The cold and flu season is once again upon us. I encourage you all to get your flu shots first and foremost. This is such an important part of maintaining your physical health. Next I plead with you to please stay home from church if you have a fever, cold, upper respiratory infection or the like. God does not expect you to be coming to Mass under any of these circumstances. Please be respectful of your fellow parishioners during an illness. Coming to church and coughing and sneezing on others when you are ill is not healthy for any of us. Our children are taught now in health classes to cough and sneeze into their elbows so as to protect others from germs. I encourage each of us to learn to do the same. One last note of interest, if I may. At the Sign of Peace during Mass please refrain form shaking another s hand if you are sick. Simply nod and acknowledge their presence, it means the same thing. Stay well and please take care of yourself and be mindful of others. Mary Ellen Events/Meetings and Reminders Ministry MeetingsAll are WELCOME to join! Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Monday after the 9:00am Mass until noon time, in the lower church. St. Vincent de Paul will be meeting on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 5:00pm. Catholic Daughters Ministry will be meeting on Thursday, January, 7th at 12:00pm in the parish center. Ladies sodality will be hosting Our Father s Table on Thursday, January 7th from 4pm6pm at the New Hope Community Church in Marlboro. Volunteers always needed! Christmas Flower Donations Due to the early submission of the bulletins the list of Christmas Flower Donations will be printed in the bulletin in early January. F S A DECEMBER IS NATIONAL FAMILY CARE GIVERS MONT TIPS FOR BEATING HOLIDAY STRESS 1. Create a plan for the season. This will help with the fear, anxiety, rushing around and overspending. Make a list of everything that needs to be accomplished. Mark off social events on a calendar. Set a budget in advance. And most of all BE PREPARED for things to change and accept that with grace. 2. Don t take on too much. It is important to learn to say NO. 3. Give time to thinking about keeping your eating on track. Mental preparation is important to avoid holiday pitfalls you may encounter. 4. Avoid overspending. Remind yourself that spending is not what the holidays are all about. Let your heart be your guide. Make a gift list ahead of time. Think about each person for a minute before you buy. A gift that s personal and comes from your heart will be more meaningful and may be the most memorable gift of all. Gifts from the heart increase feelings of joy in you as well as the person you are giving to. 5. Avoid Holiday Entertaining Stress. Don t feel like you have to be Martha Stewart. Be yourself and prepare traditional meals and ask family members and friends to bring something to contribute. 6. Plan your holiday traveling wisely. Avoid traveling immediately before or after the holiday. Book early if flying and plan on staying a few days after the holiday. 7. Remember the goal of the season. Feel and exchange joy, love and peace. Create peace by being fully present, show love by accepting others and giving with a positive attitude and experience joy by listening to your heart. 8. Handle your emotions physically and constructively. Allow yourself to cry if you are sad, if you are angry find a private place to work that anger out. Attending to your emotions rather than ignoring them will help you enjoy the holidays more. 9. Take time for yourself. When things are hectic, sometimes you need a break to just be alone and relax. If you feel the warning signs of holiday stressanxiety, dread, denial and grumpinessstop and catch your breath and spend a few minutes relaxing to calm yourself down. 6 Sunday Throughout theweek: Read the Gospel and Color Sharing the Gospel Mary couldn't wait to visit her much older cousin, Elizabeth, up in the hills of Judea. Both of them were expecting babies. Each of them knew that the birth of her child was a special event that could only happen because they trusted God. Your own mother trusted that God would give you life in this world. Both Mary and Elizabeth watched their children grow up to do good things. You can grow up to do good things too, if you trust in God. Prayer Dear Jesus, help me to trust you and to remember that you are the reason we celebrate Christmas. Amen. Something to Draw Ask your mother who she visited while she was waiting for you to be born. Draw a picture of her visiting with a relative or friend. Mission for the Week You belong to a larger family than just the people in your home. See how many of your relatives you can name before you visit them at Christmas. When you do see them, wish them "Merry Christmas!" 6
