W ALL SAINTS & ALL SOULS DAY This week we celebrate All Saints Day (a Holy Day of Obligation) and All Souls Day (which is not, but it is a wonderful practice to attend Mass to pray for the poor souls in Purgatory). All Saints Day Vigil 4 p.m. on Halloween 1 Nov. - 9 a.m. 7 p.m. All Souls Day (2 Nov.) 9 a.m. 5:30 p.m. (Latin) 7 p.m. Following the 7 p.m. Mass on All Souls Day, we will have our traditional procession to Acushnet Cemetery to pray for the faithful departed. UPCOMING TALK Next Sunday at 9:15 a.m. is the next talk of our year of reflection on the legacy of St. John Paul II. Deacon Pepin will present his teaching on the Holy Trinity. I hope you can make it! FREEMASONRY If you listen to the radio, as I do, I m sure you ve heard some advertisements inviting people to join the Freemasons. You may also be aware that a Catholic cannot become a Freemason but why? In many ways, for the same reason one cannot be a Catholic and a Baptist, or a Catholic and an atheist, at the same time: Freemasonry is not just a fraternal organization, but also incorporates religious belief. It includes a form of religion called Deism that, while not explicitly rejecting Christianity, nevertheless exalts human reason at the expense of Divine Revelation, and while professing the truth of belief in a vague notion of God, explicitly excludes any mention of Jesus Christ through Whom alone we are saved, as is our faith. This is not to say that individual Freemasons are bad people, or to deny the authentic good done by Freemasons in the name of charity. It is, though, simply for your own knowledge so that, when you hear the invitation to join a lodge, you have some understanding of why Catholics cannot join. FROM ST. JOHN PAUL II We close this month with a prayer from his letter on the Gospel of Life: O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life. Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy.

6 2017 RWANDAN FUNDRAISER A MESSAGE FROM FATHER WILLIAMS Our parish has established a beautiful relationship with the local church in Rwanda through our friend Fr. Leonard Kayondo that has allowed us to support their continued development. On 18 November we will have a fundraising event to support student scholarships which you won t want to miss! If you ve ever wanted to be a contestant on The Price is Right but have never been called to come on down,, now s your chance! The event will include a spaghetti dinner, followed by SFX s version of The Price is Right. Either enter to be a contestant (with the chance to win prizes), or sit back and enjoy the show! Tickets are available following Mass in the back of the church. This event is to help raise funds to cover the tuition costs of the 10 Rwandan students that we sponsor for all of their high school years. The cost of high school is $250 a year for each child and we try to raise $5,000 every 2 years. Additionally, in the past some parishioners have given a full scholarship of $250 to help us achieve our goal. If you would like to make the gift of a full scholarship, please see Fr. Williams.
