Sunday s Readings: First Reading - Moses said, Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! (Numbers 11:25-29). Psalm - The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart (Psalm 19) Second Reading - Come now, you rich. The wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud (Jason 5:1-6). Gospel - Whoever is not against us is for us (Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. NOT AGAINST US Like Moses before him, Jesus corrects his disciples misunderstanding of the gift of the Spirit. They saw people who were not of their company casting out demons and doing other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out that no one who does a good deed in his name can be opposed to him at the same time. He goes on to point out the importance of the little ones, : the poor, simple people, children, the meek ones who are not important in the world. It is to them that he was sent, not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He underscores the importance of small works done in faith, as well as big works like driving out demons. Anyone who gives you a cup of water... because you belong to Christ... will surely not lose his reward (Mark 9:41). God builds the coming reign little by little in our actions, however small and unassuming, when they are done out of love of God and neighbor. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Members of the 31 Club agree to go to daily Mass on a particular day every month and offer that Mass for an increase of vocations to the Church. There is a great need for vocations in the Church today. One of the best ways to increase vocations is through prayer, and the greatest prayer we have is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Upcoming Mass commitments: Sept. 30: Bethann D., Linda D., Julie M., James S. Oct. 1: Maxine R., Mark S., Evelyn V., Pat B. Oct. 2: Kathy W., Deacon Dennis K. Oct. 3: Sister Peggy, Linda D., Virginia S. Oct. 4: Arlene B. Oct. 5: Ed B., Joyce K., Chuck & Linda R. Oct. 6: Maxine B., Denise & Michael G., Bernie H., Susan F. If you would like to join the OLP 31 Club, please call Dave or Kathy Wayman at There are no dues and no meetings, only opportunities for grace and the satisfaction that comes from helping to fulfill a great need in the Church. When at Mass offer the Mass for Vocations by praying the prayer below... O God, who wills not the death of a sinner * but rather that he be converted and live * grant we beseech you * through the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin * Saint Joseph, her spouse * St. Junipero Serra * and all the saints * an increase of laborers for your Church * fellow laborers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls * through the same Jesus Christ * Your Son * Who lives and reigns with You * In the unity of the Holy Spirit * God forever * and ever. Amen. Serra Prayer for Vocations

4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace- Last Sunday at the 11AM Anointing of the Sick Mass we had a scary and tragic occurrence as one of our parishioners, John Cianella, had a heart attack. I am extremely grateful to all who responded in helping John- the attendees at Mass who began CPR and offered medical support; our ushers who called 911 and retrieved the AED; the paramedics who took over medical care and helped transport John to the hospital, and to all who were at Mass that provided spiritual support through their prayer as John was being tended to. I was able to offer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to John as the Oils were in the sanctuary for our Anointing of the Sick Mass. Unfortunately John did pass away and we celebrated his funeral Mass this past Saturday here at OLP. I hope we can all find peace in knowing that we did all that we could for John in this moment of crisis. His family is very grateful for all that we did. Confronting death is this intense way forces us to reflect on something that our Catholic Church focuses on every year in the month of November; our earthly death and the eternal purpose for which God made us. We recall that God did not create us to live on earth forever but rather to experience the fullness of His presence, love, peace, joy, truth, beauty and grace forever in heaven. We celebrate every Sunday our belief that the love and mercy of Jesus Christ has gained eternity in heaven for us through His passion, death and resurrection. The only things that can separate us from God s eternal love are sin and death, and Jesus has conquered them once and for all. As John was being taken out of the church, I encouraged him to hear God speaking to him the words that He has spoken throughout the Bible and most powerfully from the lips of Jesus, be not afraid, I am with you. Jesus was with John and Jesus is with us. With Him at our side, we truly have nothing to fear. So I hope this difficult experience for our parish can renew our faith in those fundamental truths of our Church. I hope and pray that we can allow this to draw us deeper in our faith and once again join St. Peter in the words he stated in the Gospel several Sundays ago, where else shall we go, Lord, you have the words of eternal life. May God bless John, and all our beloved dead, with eternal peace and may He bless our week ahead! Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich Our Lady of Peace, patroness of our parish & school. pray for us! St. Nicholas, patron of the Erie Catholic School System. pray for us! St. Patrick, patron of the Diocese of Erie pray for us! Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the Catholic Church of the USA pray for us! St. Joseph, universal patron of the church. pray for us! Other notes from the pastor **THANK YOU to everyone who supported our 4 th Annual Faithful to the Finish 5K several weeks ago. We had over 150 participants who registered and many sponsors and benefactors. It was a beautiful day at Presque Isle and all who attended had a great time. Mark your calendars now for next year- September 14, 2019! **Wish List Response and New Items Once again, our OLP ERIE, PA requests of 60 chairs for our parish social room and a one year parish subscription to FORMED. Thank you to our generous donors! Our new Director of Youth Ministry, Corey Ferraro, would like to include some entertainment options for our youth in our newly established Youth Room (meeting room in the basement). So our NEW WISH LIST ITEMS are: a SWITCH Game System at $300; new games at $120; and $150 for a new Flat Screen TV. Contact the parish office if you are interested in donating any part of that $570 entertainment package for our parish youth. **Parish Registration Promotion Our newly formed Welcome Committee is sponsoring a Parish Registration Promotion on the first three Sundays of October. There will be members of our committee at all Masses to help people officially register as members of Our Lady of Peace Parish. Why register as a member of OLP? Here are a few reasons to consider: ONE- registration is a way of committing to living out your Catholic faith in an intentional way through the mission of our parish through stewardship of your time, talent and treasure. It formally engages you in the financial support of our parish mission and also allows us to provide documentation of your financial support for tax purposes; TWO- registration is a concrete way to show you are actively practicing your faith and is required for those seeking to be Godparents or Sponsors for Baptism and Confirmation; THREE- registration will allow our new welcome committee to reach out to you and provide you information about our parish community and life; FOUR- registration allows you to receive all parish mailings and communication through as well as placing you on the mailing list for our Diocesan FAITH Magazine which is published six times a year. Please consider registering at OLP if you are not registered at a parish already and consider inviting your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers who are Catholic and do not have a parish to formally register at OLP. **Annual Pet Blessing The Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi will be the date for our annual pet blessing at OLP which is Sunday, October 7 th. It will be held at 12:30PM in the parking lot in between the school and the church. This will be Fr. Kyle s first time to lead such a blessing as a priest so I know he is looking forward to it. All pets are welcome, as long as they are accompanied by an owner! **Women s Cursillo 253 I will be one of the spiritual directors for Women s Cursillo 253 from October held at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Harborcreek. Cursillo is a short course in Catholic belief and spirituality and an wonderful and authentic experience of Christian community. It would be a great blessing to be able to experience Cursillo with a group of women from OLP. If you are considering attending please contact me or the parish office for more information. **Part-time Communications Coordinator Needed We are looking to establish a new position on our staff in response to the Pastoral Council s recommendation last year. We are seeking a part time Communications Coordinator who will help oversee our social media communications as well as evaluating areas that we can grow in our effort to communicate our mission here at Our Lady of Peace more effectively. As recognized by the Pastoral Council, part of the new evangelization is meeting our people where they are and we know that more and more people (especially our younger

A Family Perspective The words in today s gospel, Whoever gives a cup of water in the name of Christ will not lose their reward hits us at home. As parents, we gain our reward when we bring a bottle to a crying infant in the middle of the night, or juice boxes to parched fiveyear-old s, or hold ice chips to the fevered lips of a spouse. 7 Location: Presque Isle State Park - Beach #1 Date & Time: October 7, 2018 Rosary will be recited at 4:00PM - Please arrive at 3:30PM Purpose: To call upon God through the powerful intersession of Our Lady to heal our country. Remember the Holy League of Nations that Pope St. Pius V formed in 1571, and the result of the battle they engaged in? Their victory at Lepanto on Oct. 7, 1571 was attributed to the Rosary, and the date became the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. The new Holy League of Nations is gearing up for another battle this October 7 - using only one weapon - the Rosary. The battleground is not Lepanto but this entire country. Plus other countries also joining in this international Allied effort. It s not named Operation This or That, but very much to the point the U.S. Rosary Coast to Coast.
