1 Our Lady of Peace The Transfiguration What was your last experience of awe? What stopped you and caught your attention? Why did this event have such power over you? Life is full of surprises. Around every corner, in every part of life, experiences of wonder await us. We only need to open ourselves for the possibility of the different, the unexpected. But the rote and routine of life dull our sense of awe. We become too familiar, take people for granted, make too many assumptions. The disciples lived with Jesus throughout his ministry in Galilee. Even the closest of Jesus' friends walked with him as he made his way to Jerusalem blinded by their daily routines. They thought they knew Jesus. They thought they knew what to expect. Were they in for a shock! February 25, West 38th Street, Erie, PA Second Sunday of Lent

Sunday s Readings: First Reading - The sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith (Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18). Psalm - I walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading - God did not spare his own Son (Romans 8:31b-34). Gospel - This is my beloved Son (Mark 9:2-10). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all people for all time. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace- Silence is the language of God. That is one of my favorite quotes from Thomas Merton who was a Cistercian monk, a contemplative, a prolific writer and one of the most well-known American Catholics of the mid 1900s. I went to the Monastery in Gethsemane, KY where Merton lived for my annual priest retreat two years ago and grew in my appreciation of silence as a great place to encounter God. It is for this reason that the church invites us to more silence during Lent. By being still and silent, in a sense we give God a chance to catch up to us. In silence we learn the value of listening rather than speaking. In silence we become more aware of every step that we are taking in life and whether those steps are taking us closer or farther away from God. In silence we slow down and remove the noise of life and try to still the other voices that are constantly speaking to us or at us in our culture. In silence we grow in wisdom that allows us to see things as God sees them, and not as the world does. In silence we more effectively hear the voice of the living God, not only in words but in His loving presence and being. In response to this Lenten invitation to more silence, the liturgy committee at Our Lady of Peace has decided during Lent to emphasize the liturgical moments of silence already included in the Mass but not always observed. These moments include: a.) the invitation to examine our conscience during the Penitential Rite at the beginning of Mass ( Let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare our hearts to celebrate these Sacred Mysteries ); b.) at the start of certain prayers when the priest says, "Let us pray" (so we can all speak to God in our own words before the priest collects them all into one); c.) after each of the Scripture readings (to digest the Word of God); d.) after the homily (to allow the priest s words to sink in); and e.) after all have received Communion (to receive God s loving embrace, to thank God and love Him back). The ultimate goal of all of these moments of silence during Mass is to allow God to make a more lasting impression on us during Mass. The hope is that we do not just have a superficial encounter with God at Mass that is lost as soon as we leave the doors of the church but that we allow God s grace and presence to penetrate our very being at a depth that changes us and stays with us. This might feel like too ambitious of a goal, but that s what our church and our God desires for us. So let s embrace these silent moments at Mass or more importantly let God embrace us more fully through them. May God bless our Lenten silence and our week ahead! Yours in Christ, Fr. Rich Our Lady of Peace. pray for us! St. Joseph, universal patron of the church. pray for us! St. Patrick, patron of the Diocese of Erie. pray for us! Other notes from the pastor **Recent Diocesan News About a week and a half ago Bishop Persico announced that he was suspending two priests in the Diocese of Erie from active duty due to accusations of ERIE, PA inappropriate behavior. Neither priest has recently served in the city of Erie so it is a bit removed from OLP but it is still very difficult news for all of us to hear as a Diocesan Church, particularly for us priests. To add to that, one of the two priests is a classmate of Fr. Kyle. So please pray for everyone involved- the alleged victims, the parishes and schools where they served, the suspended priests, Bishop Persico, and the Diocese of Erie and it s priests. May God s grace, mercy and love bring forgiveness, healing and perseverance to all. **Men s and Women s Conferences Hopefully you have seen and heard that we are blessed to be hosting the Diocesan Men s (March 3 rd ) and Women s (April 21 st ) Conferences here at Our Lady of Peace. Between our hosting and the fact that we are one of the largest parishes in the Diocese of Erie, I hope that we would have the largest representation as a parish at both conferences. For the men, it is a great Lenten opportunity to set aside time for God and for the women it is a great way to celebrate the joy of Easter. Men and Women are different and have different spiritualties and this is a great chance to be uniquely challenged as men and women of God and to come together to support each other in that way. I cannot encourage enough ALL the men and women of our parish to be a part of these days of grace! **The Bible and the Sacraments As our Bible Study of the Gospel of St. Mark comes to a conclusion, I want to encourage you to participate in our next adult formation Lenten Series called The Bible and the Sacraments. It will take place on the Tuesdays of Lent starting on February 20 th from 7-9pm in the main church. It will include video presentations and does not require registration. You are welcome to come for one or all of the presentations. There will be fellowship after all the sessions. See elsewhere in the bulletin for more details and please consider incorporating this adult formation opportunity in your Lenten plan. **Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) 2018 Commitment Sunday To summarize our CSA our parish goal is $220,000 with $172, 559 designated for our diocesan assessment and the remainder going to our parish projectswhich include renovation of the church restrooms, repainting and re-carpeting the parish office hallway and offices and the replacement of the outdoor mushroom lights around the church. Ideally you are asked to bring your pledge envelope to Mass and include it in the offertory (to symbolically reinforce that this is part of your offering to God at Mass). Remember that if you are not able to make a financial pledge, that your spiritual pledge of prayer and fasting are just as important and it let s me know that you are committed to our mission so please still hand in a pledge envelope. Envelopes are also available at Mass if you do not bring yours. If you are not prepared to make your pledge this weekend, then you are welcome to include it in the offertory at

A Family Perspective The Women Gather at the Well The apostles thought they knew Jesus, but when he changed in front of them at the Transfiguration, they were afraid. In families, we cannot freeze relationships because change and growth are inevitable. Children grow up, parents grow old and spouses change. Transfigurations are all around us and within us.
