1 Our Lady of Peace Mission Appeal This Weekend, August 22/23 From the Pastor s Desk WELCOME, FATHER REECE! This weekend our Mission Co-op speaker is Father Richard Reecee, OSFS, making a mission appeal for the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. Some of you are old enough (like me) to remember when the Oblates taught at Cathedral Prep. Besides their ministry in education in the States, they are serving in South Africa, Namibia, Benin, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Ecuador, India, Columbia, Haiti, the Ukraine, the Phillippines and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Father Reece taught and was Principal in several East Coast Catholic high schools, served as head of his congregation for a dozen years and then became a full time missionary in India, South Africa and Namibia, where he now serves. There are many people in the mission because of the availability of water, despite the fact that it rains only once a year. The people have a strong Catholic faith and are extremely poor. It is a harsh life in the desert, and little opportunity for work. Father will be asking for our help in their efforts. Thanks in advance for your generous response. Thank you to all those who are willing to help with this important ministry of keeping our church clean and beautiful. Hearts and Hands Prayer Line Ministry Do you have time to pray daily? Are you interested in becoming one of our prayer partners? Hearts and Hands Prayer Line entails receiving specific prayer requests and calling the next person on the prayer line chain to pass along the prayer requests. Opportunities for both mornings and evenings (6:00 9:00PM) are available. We are in the process of updating our prayer chain list and welcome newcomers. Eyeglass Collection The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Erie #515, will be collecting old eyeglasses over the summer months for donation to LensCrafters. These glasses are used for their One Sight program, which provides glasses to those living in impoverished countries, as well as those in our own country. Please place them in the box in the vestibule marked: OLD Eye Glasses Only Do you enjoy gardening and working outside? Second Harvest Food Bank is looking for volunteers who will go to farms to glean remaining produce after the harvest. This is a great opportunity for service hours. Our participation in Erie Gives earned us $16,131 on August 11, and it was all due to your generosity, our need, Father David and Cynthia updating our Facebook page hourly, and the appeal that this community effort has across the area. What a remarkable experience! As you may know, we re using our funds to expand and update our parking lot security system, to help prevent vandalism and provide usable surveillance data to law enforcement. Again, thank you for your participation in this project. PARISH PASTORAL PLANNING The third and fourth themes that have emerged from the data-gathering stage of the pastoral plan are: Do a better job of engaging the youth in our diocese and commit to further training of the laity for pastoral ministry. As the Bishop said, it s no secret that we need to find new ways to capture the interest of the young people of the diocese in the life of the Church. The first step in accomplishing this would be to spend more time listening to them and trying to understand their ideas and the perspectives they bring to faith life. The pastoral process is attempting to do just that with listening sessions in various parts of the diocese. Training the laity to take their rightful place in the ministerial life of the church is key to the future vitality of the Church. This is accomplished in many ways, some of them right here at OLP. Liturgical minister training sessions, ongoing Scripture study, catechist updates, keeping informed through resources, written and digital, found in the vestibule magazine / DVD racks. Faith magazine and the regular editions of Faith Life are excellent sources for updating and formation. The bishop suggested bringing people from other parishes together to train as catechists as an experience of community building and shared faith. We re doing just this on October 4, 2015 with St. Jude s Parish as we celebrate our parish picnics together with Bishop Persico, marking our identical 60th anniversaries as parishes. Information Meeting for Prospective New Knights of Columbus Members ERIE, PA The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world, with over 1.8 million members in over 14,000 Councils. Our Order is built upon the foundation of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The Knights welcome any man, 18 years of age or older, who is a practicing Catholic. The major focus of our Council is the activities of Our Lady of Peace Parish and community. Some of our major activities are: monthly KOC Pancake Breakfast, Voter Registration program, Right to Life involvement, Emmaus Soup Kitchen involvement, VA Hospital involvement, St. Hubert and St. Peter medals, Keep Christ in Christmas campaign, and parish seminarian support. If you have ever been interested in finding out a little more about the Knights of Columbus, we will have an Information Night scheduled for Sunday, August 30th at 6:00PM in the church Social Room. You can even bring a friend. We can answer any questions that you might have concerning the Knights. New members are always welcome. FAITH FORMATION NEWS Remember: For a student to be confirmed in grade eleven, he/she must have attended Religious Education in grades 9 & 10 OR have attended a Catholic High School. Any service hours completed for school can be used to fulfill Religious Education requirements. Simply submit a copy of your paperwork to the Faith formation office. By now all registered families should have received an containing important Religious Ed news as well as a calendar for the school year.
