In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. 4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace- Happy Feast of the Epiphany and Merry Christmas! As we continue in the Christmas Season it is interesting to note that the traditional 12 days of Christmas are not really a part of our liturgical calendar. They are the days from Christmas (December 25) to the Epiphany (January 6). But just to confuse you, in most Catholic churches in the United States, we move the Feast of the Epiphany to the Sunday closest to January 6 th. So that is why we celebrate the Epiphany and remember the adoration of the Magi this Sunday. The recognition of the Christ child by the Magi (gentiles or non-jews) from other countries was significant as a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophesies and as a reinforcement that the Savior came for ALL peoples (the lowly shepherds and foreigners) and not just for the Jews or more exclusively for the Jewish religious and upper class. It reinforces the universality of our faith and that Jesus came to save ALL peoples. Recall that the word catholic means universal, and the Epiphany is a good time to renew our prayer for all people to know the saving truth of Jesus Christ. There is great symbolism and tradition surrounding the Epiphany. In some cultures, because of the connection with the gifts of the Magi, families exchange gifts on this day. Speaking of the Magi s gifts, they have always been understood to be symbolic of different dimensions of the infant Jesus identify and mission gold associated with royalty to recognize Him as King of Kings, frankincense associated with the worship of God in the temple to recognize His divinity, and myrrh, the oil associated with preparing the body for burial, to recognize His ultimate purpose to die for our salvation. This weekend is the traditional time for the Epiphany Proclamation. See below for the actual proclamation. Make sure you mark the dates on your personal calendar and set aside those most important days of our liturgical year (Holy Week and Easter) for prayer and celebration with your parish family. Do not let those days be an after-thought, but make them a priority around which to plan vacations, events, and other things that can keep us from worshiping. The Christmas Season, and more specifically the Epiphany, is also the traditional time of year for house blessings. Fr. Kyle and I are available to come to your homes and bless them with you. I have read this book and it is an excellent source of renewing our appreciation of our Catholic faith and tradition. I thank Warren and Christine Beaver who generously covered most of the financial cost of the books and helped organize their distribution at all the Christmas Masses. **Appreciation Dinner After significant consultation with the Parish Staff, Pastoral Council and Finance Council, it was decided that we will have an Appreciation Dinner for all of our parish volunteers who help in any capacity at the church to support our mission. The dinner will be held on Saturday, January 20th in the OLP Cafeteria. Our gathering will begin immediately following the 5:00pm Mass (so probably around 6:15pm) with social time and dinner served at 6:45pm. This is a chance for our generous volunteers to be served for once, as they have typically been the servants in their ministries, so the meal will be catered. 7 Traveling Vocation Chalice Prayers for Vocations To promote family prayer and awareness of vocations, we have introduced the Traveling Chalice Program. It will be easy to participate in the program. Each week, a parishioner will take the Chalice home, put it in a prominent place and pray daily for vocations. In response to Christ s call, Pray the LORD of the Harvest that there be laborers for the vineyard. Suitable prayers are included. You may wish to talk to your family about vocations, the need for priests and religious and how they can affirm priests and religious in their vocations. We are happy to announce that we have removed some the confusion between the Cash Back cket sales and Casino Night by renaming both events as the OLP Crusader Derby.
