1 Our Lady of Peace First Apparition of Our Lady On May 13, 1917, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco were playing in the Cova da Iria when they saw a flash of lightning. Thinking a thunderstorm was coming they gathered the sheep to head home. The Light flashed again and they beheld a beautiful Lady poised over a little holmoak tree. She was dressed in white and more brilliant than the sun. The children were bathed in the light radiating from her. She told them she was from heaven and asked them to come to the Cova for six successive months on the 13th day at the same hour. When Lucia questioned our Lady if they would go to heaven, our Lady replied that Lucia and Jacinta would and Francisco too, but he must pray many rosaries first. Our Lady asked the children, "Do you wish to offer up to God all the sufferings He desires to send you in reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinners?" They responded, "Yes, we do." Our Lady responded, "Go then, for you will have much to suffer, but the grace of God will comfort you." While pronouncing these words our Lady opened her hands, shedding on them a light so intense that it penetrated to the inmost recesses of their hearts, making them see themselves in God, Who was that Light. Then by an interior impulse the three children fell to their knees and repeated in their hearts, "O most Holy Trinity, I adore Thee! My God, my God, I Love Thee in the most Blessed Sacrament!" After a few moments our Lady spoke again. "Pray the rosary every day in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war." Our Lady then ascended serenely towards the east until she disappeared. Second Apparition of Our Lady On June 13, 1917, our Lady appeared again over the little holmoak tree as she had in May. Lucia, Jacinta, Francisco and about 50 other people were present. Our Lady requested the children return there the next month and also that they pray the rosary every day saying after each mystery, "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven especially those in most need of thy mercy." Lucia asked if our Lady would take them to heaven. She answered, "Yes, I will take Jacinta and Francisco soon, but you must remain here sometime longer. Jesus wishes to make use of you to make me known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart." Lucia was concerned she was to stay here alone but our Lady reassured her that she would never leave her alone; her Immaculate Heart would be her refuge and the way to lead her to God. Then our Lady opened her hands and communicated to the children once again the great light which enveloped her. In that light they saw themselves submerged in God. Jacinta and Francisco seemed to be in the light which rose toward heaven while Lucia was in that which was poured out upon the earth. In front of our Lady's right hand there was a heart encircled with thorns that pierced it. The children understood it was the Immaculate Heart of Mary, outraged by the sins of humanity, and that she was calling for reparation. GRATITUDE Surely we can all recall at least a few days in our lives when things were going so well that nothing could put us in a bad mood. Maybe it was the day a very special person asked us to the senior prom, or perhaps it was our wedding day. Maybe it was the day we learned that we were expecting a long-awaited child, or the day we got an overdue promotion. There was elation in our hearts and lightness in our step, an extraordinary vitality throughout the day. We probably got on the phone right away to tell at least a few key people about our good fortune. This is surely how Naaman and the leper must have felt when they were rid of their terrible diseases. They were hard-pressed to contain their gratitude, and although they were both unfamiliar with the customs of a foreign land, they had the good manners to thank the people responsible for their cures. Wesley didn t know about Maria House Project or the OLP casserole club, but a lot of you are doing a lot of good, in the way you can: making casseroles. The men who enjoy this food are very grateful. 7 Q. Why St. Peregrine? A. In 2013, John & Theresa Glance won the $10,000 prize at Casino Night and felt called to give back to our parish. Because they had both been touched by cancer, they gave the seed money for a shrine to St. Peregrine, the patron of those suffering from cancer. As a parish family, we have all been affected by cancer in some way. Please consider making a donation toward the St. Peregrine Shrine next weekend. Prayer: Dear St. Peregrine, I need your help. I feel so uncertain of my life right now. This serious illness makes me long for a sign of God s love. Help me to imitate your enduring faith when you faced the challenge of cancer. Allow me to trust the Lord the way you did in this moment of distress. I want to be cured, but right now I ask God for the strength to bear the cross in my life. I seek the power to proclaim God s presence in my life despite hardship, anguish, and fear I now experience. O glorious St. Peregrine, be an inspiration to me and petitioner of these needed graces from our loving father. Amen. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month We always think that it could never happen to us. Then you receive the news that it s cancer. When I received that news, I was devastated. I felt numb and wanted to know why me? I remember standing in front of a crucifix and was about to say really?, breast cancer? un l I realized who I was looking at. Jesus totally understood what suffering was; who be er to turn to for understanding and support? God also provided support in the many faithful people who went out of their way to help us, with prayers, meals and presence. I also would never had go en through this experience without the loving support of my wonderful husband and daughter. 8 World Mission Sunday Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. its theme this year is Mercy Changes the World. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve some of the poorest of the poor. Please keep the Mission in your prayers and be generous in next week s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.
