Sunday s Readings: First Reading: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God. Psalm: Praise the Lord, my soul Second Reading: Show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel: Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.
4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk Be opened! We get a little geography lesson at the beginning of today s gospel passage as we move through or near certain Gentile settlements. The set-up is intended to let us know that the crowd and the deaf man they bring to Jesus are Gentiles and that Jesus power and message is going out beyond the children of Israel. Jesus responds to the crowd s request in a very physical way. He takes the man apart so they can be by themselves and then performs a series of gestures: putting his fingers into the man s ears, touching his tongue with spittle, looking up to heaven, groaning and concluding with the command, Be opened! The healing is accomplished, and by relating that his impediment was removed, it echoes the language of an exorcism, hinting that the power of the Evil One was broken. But trying to do this in private, along with the direction not to tell anyone about it is not effective, as the word spreads that he has done all things well. Imagine what that man was feeling, hearing now for the first time in his life. It must have been a mix of confusion and wonder and pleasure and relief. And that s not all. He can now speak in a clear and understandable way. This is life changing! And symbolic of our lives of faith as well. Apart from God s grace, we are deaf to the Word of God spoken to us by Jesus and by opening our ears, Jesus gives us the capacity to hear his Word, and having heard it, we can testify to it by speaking of our own faith journeys evangelizing because we cannot help ourselves from doing so. How many times do we read that the disciples were told to listen, to be attentive, to stay awake and to stretch themselves beyond just the sound of words, to their deeper meaning and invitation? Same for us. Before we can be evangelizing disciples, we re encouraged to listen and to hear clearly. Was there ever a time in your life of faith that you experienced being unplugged and heard the message of Jesus clearly? What brought that about? Is his voice still just as clear? PASTORAL PLANNING PROCESS The sixth and last theme that emerged from the diocesan planning listening sessions is that Evangelization is our path to growth. As Bishop Persico said, Strengthening the faith of active parishioners and welcoming others into the love of Christ is the beginning and end of our mission. Is it coincidental that it is said in a different way to us today in the Sunday gospel? I think it s Providential, not coincidental. It s the perpetual message for Christians to be evangelizers. Just last week we were reminded to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. Compelled by the grace of our Baptism and nourished on the Eucharist and God s Word, we re sent to bring the power of Christ s life and message to others by living a life of witness. And we can preach with our lives just as effectively as we can with our lips. The man in the gospel was empowered not only to listen, but also to be understood for the first time. What do people understand about our faith from watching us live our lives? A Stewardship of Sharing Week of Aug 23, 2015 Fiscal Year July June 2015 ERIE, PA PARISH PICNIC There will be clipboards with sign-up sheets for the parish picnic at the entryways for the next several weekends. Please just leave us your name and the number in your family who intend to attend as this will help us make sure there is enough food for the celebration. As you may know, we re celebrating our 60 th anniversary as a parish this year, and the picnic will take place at Rainbow Gardens on Sunday October 4, beginning with the 11:00 Mass. Bishop Persico will be the main celebrant, and we ll be concelebrating with St. Jude the Apostle Parish, as we were both founded on the same day, September 30, One of the central themes of the Pastoral Planning Process for the diocese that the Bishop emphasized is that of collaboration, especially between parishes. The meat and beverages will be supplied; everyone will be asked to bring a side dish to fill out our picnic menu. After the poor showing at last year s picnic, the Parish Pastoral Council had taken up the task of planning for the picnic when this opportunity to partner with St. Jude s came up, so we agreed to try it because of the special nature of the double anniversary. The Council will be talking about the 2016 picnic in the month ahead. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, October 4, 2015, 11:00AM at Rainbow Gardens for this year s special anniversary edition.
