Like our Facebook Page Our Lady of Peace Parish Follow us on OLPParishErie Happy New Year! I hope you have all enjoyed this sacred season with family and friends. These special days of celebration give us all reason to pause and thank God for the gift of our OLP family and for having another year together! This Sunday, we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany. The word epiphany comes from the Greek word, epiphainen which is a verb that means, to shine upon, to manifest, or to make known. Thus, the feast of the Epiphany is a celebration of the many ways in which Christ makes Himself known in the world; namely: the visit of the Magi, the Baptism of Jesus, and the first miracle at Cana. In western culture, the visit of the Magi is emphasized in our feast today and Christ s Baptism is celebrated next Sunday. The feast of Epiphany began in the East, but today is celebrated by the Eastern and Western churches alike. In many parts of Europe, the celebration of Epiphany is even more prominent than the celebration of Christmas and it is on this day that many exchange gifts, a reminder of the gifts that the Wise Men brought to the Christ Child. Many of you may also be familiar with the traditional blessing of homes on Epiphany. Typically, on Epiphany, the tops of doorpost are inscribed with the letters, 20+C+M+B+16 which stands for the Latin phrase Christus Mansionem Benedicat or Christ bless this home. Tradition also suggests that the letters C, M, and B are the first letters of the names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. In celebration of Epiphany, our music ministries including Selah, Voice of Peace, and SpiritSong Youth Ensemble will hold their annual Star of Wonder Epiphany Concert on Friday, January 8 th at 7:30PM in Church. Refreshments and fellowship will follow the concert. Please attend if you are able. I know this is the time of year when many of us are coming down with colds and other illnesses. If you re feeling down in mind, body, or spirit or if you know someone who is, please consider attending the healing mass this Wednesday, January 6 th at 7:30 in Church. The mass features a guest priest who will celebrate the mass, offering a word of hope and healing. Immediately following mass, everyone will be invited to come forward and be prayed over if they desire. This can be a wonderful and therapeutic opportunity. January is the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court Decision Roe vs. Wade which legalized on-demand abortion in the United States. This court decision was a tremendous tragedy in our nation s history. For the past 42 years, thousands have made their way to Washington D.C. for the March for Life in a peaceful and prayerful protest against this Supreme Court Decision. There are also many opportunities for us to stand up for life within our own community. On Saturday, January 9 th, there will be a March for Life here in Erie that will begin at 11AM in Perry Square. Also, Saturday, January 16 th at 9AM at the Bayfront Convention Center, Erie s People for Life will host their 38 th annual Pro-Life breakfast. Please consider attending one of these local pro-life events. Let us continue to pray that life will be protected from conception until natural death. I wish everyone a safe and wonderful week. Let us continue to keep Fr. Glenn in our prayers. Know of my daily prayers for all of you. Please pray for me. With prayers and blessings, Fr. David
