1 Our Lady of Peace The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has called for a special day of prayer for peace on Friday, September 9 th. We will offer a special Votive Mass for peace at our regularly scheduled 7AM and 12:10 PM mass times. The Blessed Sacrament will also be exposed in the Mother s Chapel following 7AM Mass and will remain exposed until 3PM, whereupon we will conclude with special prayers and Benediction. Special Collection Catholic Education Collection The 2016 Catholic Education Collection will take place on September The Catholic Faith, which we believe and practice, has been handed on through twenty centuries and counting and now reaches our present generation in fullness, richly faithful to Jesus and the Gospel message. Our challenge as Catholic faithful is the same: to hand on the Catholic Faith to succeeding generations. Your help is needed to assist in this challenge. Please give generously to this year s Catholic Education Collection. One half of this collection stays here at Our Lady of Peace Parish to help support our own religious education programs. Sunday s Readings: First Reading - Who can ever know God s counsel unless God gives wisdom and sends the Holy Spirit from on high? (Wisdom 9:13-18b). Psalm - In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge (Psalm 90). Second Reading - Paul asks Philemon to accept back his slave Onesimus, not as a slave but as a brother (Philemon 9-10, 12-17). Gospel - To be a disciple of Jesus one must carry one s own cross and renounce all possessions (Luke 14:25-33). INVITED The Good News is that we have all been invited invited to the Kingdom, invited to be disciples. It s a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions. Copyright J. S.
