4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH School Report March 24, 2013 Reflections and Updates from Fall 2012 Back in October, we shared with you Alumnus Jillian Dunn 05 was planning to go to Nicaragua. The October dress down day at school was held in order to help to aid the people of that country, and raised $500. Jillian s trip had taken place in early January. While she was home on Spring Break in early March, she returned to OLP to share her experiences with the 5th 8th grade students. Jillian began by telling the students, You all were with me in Nicaragua. I was praying for all of you. She also was constantly reminded of the OLP students as 53% of the country is their ages. As the students sat listening to Jillian share her experiences, they also had the opportunity to see a variety of her experiences projected in pictures on a screen. She shared with them how them hosting a dress down day helped to build relationships, bonds and commitments all the way from Erie, PA to Central America. Jillian had the opportunity to experience life with two different families. She spent a greater part of the trip in the capital city of Managua and then she spent a few days in the mountains. She learned of the history of the country and was integrated into everyday life. One of the challenges was communicating with the families where she stayed as she did not know much Spanish, their native language. She learned a lot in the little bit of time she spent in Nicaragua. Some of those things included, Happiness is contagious. Don t measure happiness by the things we have. Being together as a family brings happiness. Let the good things spread. And live life with a smile on your face. Special thanks to Jillian for keeping connected to her Alma Mater. For more information about OLP School, contact: Miss Lisa Wenner Director of Advancement lwenner@olpcrusaders.org ERIE, PA CRS Rice Bowl brings Lent to life. CRS Rice Bowl is a Lenten faith formation program that helps us to live in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable around the world. We pray to reflect on what type of person we are called to be. We fast to remove the things that get between us and God, and to remember those without enough to eat. We give to honor Jesus call to serve those in need. You re invited to participate in CRS Rice Bowl! Our Lady of Peace is participating in the CRS Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services Lenten program, as a way to encourage Jesus through others, especially through the most vulnerable in our world. Palm Sunday Assisting our Neighbors 40% of contributions to CRS Rice Bowl remain in our diocese, helping to support local poverty and hunger alleviation programs. The funds collected support vital Catholic programs that share in the Catholic mission of promoting the sacredness of human life and the dignity of the human person. This week we pray for people in our own community who struggle with poverty and hunger. Give to your Rice Bowl to support programs that help the poor in our own community, as well as in communities around the world. Allegheny Forest Ministries Kinzua Youth Retreat Center 32 Vera Drive, Lewis Run, PA Allegheny Forest Ministries presents a day long Retreat for Women Saturday April 13, 2013 Theme: Ancient models for today: Saints Brigid of Kildare and Hildegard of Bingen. Brigid of Kildare and Hildegard of Bingen lived centuries ago, (Brigid in the 5 th Century and Hildegard in the 11th), but their lives, teaching and prayer inspire women (and men) today. These ancient teachers were both strong women leaders in church and society, lovers of Jesus, connected to the earth and its elements, who had great compassion for the sick and those who were poor. Brigid is associated with spring time and Hildegard with greening and verdancy. The forest edge is a perfect setting for this day-long retreat for women. The day will include prayer, stories, music, quiet reflection, ritual, and faith-sharing as well as good food, time to walk outdoors or rest inside, & the company of other women. Our Retreat Facilitator will be Sister Anne McCarthy, OSB, a member of Mount Saint Benedict Monastery in Erie PA and Administrative Associate of Benetvision. Anne has a strong background in monastic studies, peace and justice and administration. Prior to her position at Benetvision she was Director of the Center for Social Concerns, Gannon University, Erie, PA and served as National Coordinator of Pax Christi USA, the national Catholic Peace Movement. Her articles on monastic life, peace, and justice have appeared in numerous magazines and journals. She recently visited Ireland where she traced the history of these two saints. Retreat Schedule: Registration and gathering will take place from 8:30am to 9:00am. The day long reflection will end at 4:00PM. Lunch is included. The registration fee for this retreat is $ Scholarships are available if needed. The retreat location: Allegheny Forest Ministries Retreat Center is located just off Route 59 between Warren and Bradford Pennsylvania, it is easily accessible from all areas of Northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York. Nestled in the village of Marshburg PA, just off State Route 59 near State Route 770, turn at Eschrich Road. Overnight accommodations are available for those wishing to arrive on Friday evening, or stay over on Saturday. DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON THE CHURCH LUMEN GENTIUM SOLEMNLY PROMULGATED BY HIS HOLINESS POPE PAUL VI ON NOVEMBER 21, 1964 CHAPTER III ON THE HIERARCHICAL STRUCTURE OF THE CHURCH AND IN PARTICULAR ON THE EPISCOPATE 22. Just as in the Gospel, the Lord so disposing, St. Peter and the other apostles constitute one apostolic college, so in a similar way the Roman Pontiff, the successor of Peter, and the bishops, the successors of the apostles, are joined together. Indeed, the very ancient practice whereby bishops duly established in all parts of the world were in communion with one another and with the Bishop of Rome in a bond of unity, charity and peace, and also the councils assembled together, in which more profound issues were settled in common, the opinion of the many having been prudently considered, both of these factors are already an indication of the collegiate character and aspect of the Episcopal order; and the ecumenical councils held in the course of centuries are also manifest proof of that same character. And it is intimated also in the practice, introduced in ancient times, of summoning several bishops to take part in the elevation of the newly elected to the ministry of the high priesthood. Hence, one is constituted a member of the Episcopal body in virtue of sacramental consecration and hierarchical communion with the head and members of the body. But the college or body of bishops has no authority unless it is understood together with the Roman Pontiff, the successor of Peter as its head. The pope's power of primacy over all, both pastors and faithful, remains whole and intact. In virtue of his office, that is as Vicar of Christ and pastor of the whole Church, the Roman Pontiff has full, supreme and universal power over the Church. And he is always free to exercise this power. The order of bishops, which succeeds to the college of apostles and gives this apostolic body continued existence, is also the subject of supreme and full power over the universal Church, provided we understand this body together with its head the Roman Pontiff and never without this head. This power can be exercised only with the consent of the Roman Pontiff. For our Lord placed Simon alone as the rock and the bearer of the keys of the Church, and made him shepherd of the whole flock; it is evident, however, that the power of binding and loosing, which was given to Peter, was granted also to the college of apostles, joined with their head. This college, insofar as it is composed of many, expresses the variety and universality of the People of God, but insofar as it is assembled under one head, it expresses the unity of the flock of Christ. In it, the bishops, faithfully recognizing the primacy and pre-eminence of their head, exercise their own authority for the good of their own faithful, and indeed of the whole Church, the Holy Spirit supporting its organic structure and harmony with moderation. The supreme power in the universal Church, which this college enjoys, is exercised in a solemn way in an ecumenical council. A council is never ecumenical unless it is confirmed or at least accepted as such by the successor of Peter; and it is prerogative of the Roman Pontiff to convoke these councils, to preside over them and to confirm them. This same collegiate power can be exercised together with the pope by the bishops living in all parts of the world, provided that the head of the college calls them to collegiate action, or at least approves of or freely accepts the united action of the scattered bishops, so that it is thereby made a collegiate act. WELCOME THE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY INTO YOUR HOME THROUGH THE HOME ENTHRONEMENT PROGRAM The Enthronement brings countless graces and blessings, as enumerated in the Twelve Great Promises he made to Saint Margaret Mary. In the visions of 17th-century French nun and mystic Margaret Mary Alacoque, Jesus promised graces, peace, consolation, blessings, mercy and more to people devoted to his Sacred Heart. Jesus and Mary calls each of us to welcome and invite their Sacred Hearts into the core of your family, your home. The Holy Family is the beginning of countless other holy families. The history of mankind, the history of salvation, passes by way of the family- Blessed Pope John Paul Blessed Mother Theresa states in an interview, I felt the best way to bring Jesus back again into the family life was, I thought, the surest, and easiest, and quickest way to Jesus is to consecrate the family to the Sacred Heart. Blessed Mother Theresa herself was on a mission to Enthrone as many homes as possible in Calcutta and this message/mission still lives on today. Jesus is waiting to bring Himself into your home and fill it with peace, unity, and love. Call or to schedule your family s Home Enthronement.
