PREPARE THE WAY Saint John the Baptist appears on the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. 5 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 4, 2016 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Elementary (Grades K-5) - Religious Ed classes meet this Sunday, December 4, 2016, from 10:30 to 12:15 in the school. Dismissal is from the cafeteria. Grad 1 Retreat December 4: Students report directly to the cafeteria. Grade 1 will be dismissed at 1:00PM from the cafeteria. First Communion Parent Meeting is next Sunday, December 11, 2016, at 12:15PM in the church Secondary (Grades 6-10) - Religious Ed classes meet this Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30 in the school. 7 Special Parish Invitation to be a part of the OLP School Advent Project. ADVENT PROJECT: CELEBRATING 29 th ANNIVERSARY OF GIVING It began in 1987, when a representative from the Erie City Mission spoke to the fourth grade, telling them about less fortunate children in other parts of our city. It was difficult for students to imagine children who wished not for toys, but for new mittens or warm socks. Teachers Elaine Cleary and Joni Blackman suggested they could show real Christmas spirit by foregoing their own Kris-Kringle gifts and giving to others. Parent, Roberta Geib enlisted the support of other parents who helped their children have a direct role in choosing and wrapping gifts, making cards and supplying homemade cookies. That year, while students in all other grades were exchanging gifts, those fourth graders stood alone, proud and satisfied they had done something good for others. Their gift sent the message of what Christmas is really about and by 1989 this became a school-wide tradition at Our Lady of Peace School. For the last five years, we have invited the parish community to join us in our charitable giving. Once again, we are asking those of you in our parish to be part of our Advent projects. Many charities, and many adults and children, have benefited from the generosity of OLP School throughout the years. It is with a great sense of pride that we share with you our plans for this Christmas season. PRE-SCHOOL / KINDERGARTEN Catholic Charities The kindergarten children will be donating small new baby items for needy families. Ideas are: bibs, baby blankets, diapers, baby shampoo/lotions, sleepers, etc. Kindergarten hopes that these baby items for the on-site closet at the Catholic Charities Mother/Infant Program will help new mothers have baby accessories that will help their babies be happy and healthy. FIRST GRADE Kids Café The first grade collects monies to support this agency that provides impoverished children ages 6 to 17 with a home away from home after their school day ends. The Café helps neighborhood children with homework, provides recreational activities, and a hot meal before they go home. SECOND GRADE Highmark Caring Place The second grade is earning and saving money for the center to help with the activities designed to help those who have lost loved ones. The students want them to know they have our love and support. THIRD GRADE Erie Dawn The third grade will be collecting donations of money throughout the advent season to assist Erie Dawn in helping impoverished women find safe affordable housing. Grade three is excited about helping women find hope for themselves and their children. FOURTH GRADE SSJ Neighborhood Network The fourth grade can help the Neighborhood Network in many ways. They are in need of hygiene products such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and toothpaste. Cleaning and laundry products are needed as well as toilet paper and paper towels. Fourth grade hopes their donations will help the Sisters of St. Joseph supply people with things we take for granted. FIFTH & SIXTH GRADE Mercy Center for Women The fifth and sixth graders are donating the $5.00 they would use for an exchange gift to buy paper products such as paper towels, toilet tissue, tissues and/or garbage bags. They hope these items or a monetary donation will contribute to safe secure homes for the homeless women and children that are served by the Mercy Center for Women. SEVENTH & EIGHTH GRADE St. Patrick s Haven The seventh & eighth graders are donating money, coffee, creamer, tube socks, spray deodorant, soap, shampoo and men s gloves to aid the temporary residence for homeless men in Erie. They feel it is important to remember those who others sometimes overlook and give these men a brighter Christmas season. This project helps all of us focus on the true meaning of Christmas. It is in giving that we receive! Help us help others! Parishioners: Please mark your items for each grade and return them to the church office no later than Monday, December 19th. 8 Retirement Fund for Religious Special Collection December 11th Letter From Bishop Persico... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Reflecting on the fruits of the Year of Mercy, I cannot help but recall the example of thousands of now elderly women and men religious who, for so many, were a living sign of God s mercy. These women and men Catholic Sisters, Brothers and Religious Order Priests were indeed the hands of Christ as they educated the young, cared for the sick, and ministered to the neediest among us. Many of us have experienced their service and witness in the many ministries they began in the Diocese of Erie. Countless have encountered their compassionate love through St. Vincent Hospital and other hospitals in DuBois, Meadville and St. Marys. Others of us were educated at Mercyhurst and Gannon Universities, as well as at Villa Maria College. Many more of us were taught by these Religious in Catholic Schools and Religious Education programs from Erie to Corry to Warren to Titusville and Oil City and Clarion and Franklin, Reynoldsville, Brookville, Punxsutawney, St. Marys, Ridgway, Johnsonburg, Bradford, Sharon, Meadville and Greenville. Catechetical Centers in Mercer and Clearfield enriched the faith of many more. Today, many senior religious continue to be vessels of mercy, serving in a wide range of volunteer and prayer ministries. Others are frail and need assistance. Most older religious ministered for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. With the ever-rising cost of health care and the increased number of those needing care, many religious communities struggle to provide for aging members. Soon our parishes will be conducting the appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an annual collection that benefits nearly 33,000 senior Sisters, Brothers and Religious Order Priests. Your gift provides vital support for medications, nursing care, and more. Last year, through the generosity of the people of this Diocese, nearly $190,000 was collected for this cause, and over $469,000 was distributed to the Benedictine Sisters, Sisters of St. Joseph, the Mercy Sisters in this region and the other religious communities who also minister with us. I recognize this is but one of numerous worthy causes in need of your support; I ask simply that you give what you can, in thanksgiving for the lessons of mercy shown to us by so many Consecrated Religious over countless years.
