2 Parish of Honley with Brockholes The Parish is situated in the picturesque Holme Valley, surrounded by hills and beautiful countryside. The parish has two village centres, Honley and Brockholes, which are about a mile apart and connected by some ribbon developments on the main road between them. Two old weavers villages nestled on the edge of the Peak District ( Last of the Summer Wine country), they are now dormitory villages with some light industry.

3 SO WHERE IN YORKSHIRE ARE WE? The Parish is situated half-way between Huddersfield and Holmfirth (2 miles south of Huddersfield and 2 miles north of Holmfirth). Honley There is a train station in both Honley and Brockholes, good bus services and the M62 and M1 are both within striking distance. Brockholes Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Bradford, Wakefield and Halifax are all within 25 miles.

4 HONLEY Honley, with its population of approximately 6,600, has a wide range of local amenities, services, shops and restaurants. The village has 2 schools, Honley C.E. (VC) Junior Infant and Nursery School, and Honley High School. There is a strong community with an active Business Association, civic trust, community village trust, theatre and Honley Show Society. The village is home to a range of light industry. The centre of the village is a designated conservation area and, with a number of characterful old houses and some cobbled streets, is a very pretty village. The vicarage is situated in Honley, close to the church and village centre.

5 BROCKHOLES Brockholes has a population of approximately 1,600. It has a village hall, an active Village Trust, village store, post office, petrol station, hairdressers, takeaway, pubs, bowling club, as well as light industry. There is one school, Brockholes C.E. (VC) Junior and Infant School. At the south end of the village, a camping and touring caravan site welcomes visitors from home and abroad wishing to visit Last of the Summer Wine country.

Down to New Mill Road, passing another converted mill complex for business.. Honley CC with its newly restored Pavilion

8 We pass Brockholes Bowling club as we enter the village, then the Old Toll Bar and bridge...and some typical stone houses.. THE PARISH WALK part 3..towards the recreation ground, overlooked by St George s, then One of the village pubs as we turn off... we walk up to the Brockholes Junior and Infants school and....up the drive by the Village Hall, before continuing to finish at St George s Church

9 Our Church services St Mary s Sunday 8.00 a.m. Holy Communion (BCP) 9.30 a.m. 1st Sunday each month: All-Age Worship 2nd, 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th Sundays: Common Worship Holy Communion (with Sunday Club for Children) Wednesday 9.30 a.m. Holy Communion (said Common Worship Communion Service) St George s Sunday a.m. 1st Sunday each month: All-Age Holy Communion 2nd, 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th Sundays: Common Worship Holy Communion 6.00 p.m. Compline At both churches there is coffee after the main Sunday service and after the Wednesday service at St Mary s. Special services are held at appropriate times of year Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Candlemas, Ash Wednesday, Mothering Sunday, Holy Week and Easter, Ascension Day, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, Harvest, Remembrance Sunday. Occasional Saints Day services and Taizé-style services are held.

10 St Mary the Virgin Church Life There has been a church present in Honley for over 500 years Mothers Union Coffee Morning every Thursday Weekly Toddlers Group (MU associated) in Honley Parish Rooms Sunday Club for children Annual Alpha Course Weekly Bible study and weekly Prayer Gathering 3 Home groups Annual introductory visits to the Church for the Honley Key Stage 1 school children. Participants in Honley Street Market every December Part of the Templeton Foundation programme to promote science and faith

11 St George the Martyr Church Life The Church has been present in the village for over 150 years Every year there is a St George s Day Community event around Brockholes and in the church The AD Youth group meets at St George s every month Social events take place in the church and village hall

12 THE VICARAGE The vicarage is close to St Mary s Church in the village itself and is a purpose-built 1960s detached house with 4 bedrooms, 2 reception rooms, a study, kitchen and pantry, downstairs toilet, 4 bedrooms and house bathroom. It has a small attractive garden and plenty of parking and storage space. The views from the house, across the Holme Valley, are stunning. The house is in good condition and was decorated and carpeted throughout only 4 years ago. Everything in the village is within walking distance, including the schools, train station and bus stops.

13 OUR 3 MAIN CHALLENGES Engaging more families, children and young people in the parish Bringing others in the parish to Christ through finding new ways to engage with our local community Discipleship of our existing congregation to help them to be serious and knowledgeable disciples of Christ, and part of the fellowship of Christ

14 WHAT WE NEED FROM A VICAR Our new vicar Is someone whose teaching and preaching is rooted in Scripture and who is able to lead us in a comprehensible way into a deeper understanding of God s message and how it applies to our lives Has great commitment to Christian education and church schools and working alongside them Has some experience of working in a fairly traditional Church of England parish and is comfortable with leading worship in a variety of styles Is committed to inclusion and to ministering to a diverse range of people, being approachable and down-to-earth, with pastoral sensitivity, empathy, compassion and with a positive regard for each and every parishioner Has the ability to challenge us to look and reach outwards, taking us beyond our church buildings to be a real and visible presence in our community and has the ability to draw people particularly young people, children and families into the church and ignite an infectious passion for God Is fun, flexible, outgoing and friendly, a people person and young at heart, a good listener with a good sense of humour and able to laugh at her/himself

16 WHAT WE OFFER TO A VICAR We are congregations who want to glorify God through all that we do. We are congregations who want to work together, and with a new vicar who will lead us in exciting and creative ways to promote the mission of God. We offer good support in both churches and the potential for development of lay leadership and we are committed to working with the vicar to meet any challenges we may face. We are welcoming, hard-working and talented people who are integral parts of our villages vibrant and collaborative communities. We have excellent established relationships with the wider community through strong links with the two C of E primary schools, and involvement in a myriad of community groups and projects in both villages (eg Honley Business Association, Honley Civic Society, Honley Show Society, Honley Library Volunteers, Honley Southgate Theatre and Brockholes Village Trust). The parish has a good vicarage in a beautiful area in which to live, nestling in the foothills of the Pennines and with good transport links. Full working expenses are offered as well as access to a private trust fund for furtherance of mission of the church. We will support the vicar in taking the appropriate amount of time off and, in addition, encourage him/her to attend to their personal ministerial development.
