1 St. Philip Information and News (SPIN) May 16, 2018 Church News Upcoming Services May 20 - Pentecost Sunday, please wear red; Receive New Members (8am); Senior Recognition (10:45am) May 27 - Holy Trinity Sunday; Memorial Day slide show; Summer Worship Schedule begins (Worship times: 8am & 9:30am; no Education hour) There will be no nursery available Sunday, May 27. Altar Flowers Flowers this weekend have been given by Chris & Andy Hancock in honor of Ginny s graduation. If you are interested in donating flowers, please contact the church office. The cost is $25 and needs to be prepaid. You are welcome to take the flowers home after the second service on Sunday. Please return the vase to the church when finished. Summer Office Hours The church office will remain open during its normal hours during the summer: 8:00am- 5:00pm Monday-Thursday and 8:00am-12:00pm on Fridays. For the summer, Pastor Brad will switch his off day from Friday to Monday; so he will be off on Mondays and be working on Fridays. Pastor Brad will be available on Fridays for meetings and visits, but make sure to call and schedule with him to check his availability. Pastor Nathan will continue to be off on Fridays. New Members We welcome new members at the 8am service this Sunday. Jane Webster has been participating in Bible study and Book Club at St. Philip She is a librarian in Denver Public Schools. Paul and Rose Goranson moved to Colorado from Wyoming a year ago. Paul is a COO at Energy Fuels and Rose is a homemaker. Looking for a New Way to Give? For more information and answers to your questions visit James Gonia Re-elected Bishop of ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod The Rev. James W. Gonia, Denver, was re-elected May 3 to serve a second six-year term as bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The election was held during the Synod Assembly, May 3-5, at the Westin Hotel Westminster in Westminster, CO. The bishop was re-elected on the first ballot with 321 votes. A total of 293 votes was needed for election. Gonia has served as bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod in Denver since He was ELCA program director for West Africa, Tanzania, and Madagascar from 2009 to

2 2012, and he served as associate pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church in Lakewood, CO from 1999 to Gonia received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN in He received a Master of Divinity degree from Luther Northwestern Seminary (now Luther Seminary) in St. Paul, MN in 1988, and a Master of Theology degree in Islamic studies at Luther Seminary in Luther is one of seven ELCA seminaries. Information about the Rocky Mountain Synod is available at rmselca.org/ Endowment Fund Grants Here are the recipients of the Endowment Fund Grants for 2018: Seeds of South Sudan, submitted by Sue Counterman - $1,000 for tuition, fees, room and board for international student Garang Manyok Giet. ELCA Youth Gathering for St. Philip Youth, submitted by Pastor Brad Doty - $1,250 for registration fees for National Youth Gathering in Houston. St. Philip Evangelism Committee, submitted by Pastor Brad Doty - $700 for the purchase of St. Philip-branded items for welcoming visitors. Ken Caryl Concert Series, submitted by Ann Husted - $800 to increase quality of concerts, advertising in local media. Lutheran Family Services-Rocky Mountain, submitted by Jim Barclay, CEO - $700 for the purpose of launching three new LFS initiatives: STEP, refugee employment, and guardianship program. Denver Seminary, submitted by Quinn Silco - $800 to pursue master's degree in sacred and liturgical music. LSTC Internship, submitted by Aaron Silco - $500 for airfare to Thailand to teach English-ELCA Global Missions. Luther Seminary, submitted by JoHanna Buchholz - $1,250 for tuition and fees to continue studies toward M.Div. St. Philip Arts Academy Attention all those who knit, crochet, do needlework or quilt! The St. Philip Arts Academy is looking for people of faith to share this skill with students 5 th grade and older. This is a four-day program and you only need to lead one class. Talk with JoHanna Buchholz if you are interested. St. Philip Donation Garden The donation garden is up and running for its 4th season. Thanks to Dave Bolt who just build two new raised beds which will become hoop houses (green houses). There are still community plots available if you're interested in growing your own vegetables; $30 for the season. Seeds and tomato cages available too. Volunteers are welcome to help with prepping, planting, and watering. A planting workday is scheduled for Saturday, May 26, 8am to 12pm -- stop by to plant a row! f you'd like to help, please contact Ana Tolentino at or atolenti@aol.com. Men s Bible Study End of Study BBQ The Annual Men's Bible Study End of Study BBQ will begin at 6pm on June 5 at the 2

Silver Sages Potluck Picnic Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30am Our picnic will be at Dick & Joanne Rock's Community Room, north on DePew at Coal Mine. Please bring a dish to share and your own beverage. Join us if you're over 55, single, married, or have a significant other. Everyone is welcome! Attention All You Cribbage Sharks Come join us for the Annual Cribbage Tournament on Saturday, June 23, 10am 2pm in the Fellowship Hall. Lunch will be provided and prizes will be awarded. Please feel free to bring a snack to share with your fellow competitors. All ages and levels of experience are welcome (hoping to have my 10 and 15 year-old grandchildren attend). The entry fee is $20 and the proceeds are pegged for the kitchen renovation. The sign-up sheet is located in the narthex. Church Needs/Fundraising Readers for Pentecost Sunday We are looking for those who are familiar with another language to read the lesson on Pentecost Sunday, May 20. This is done from your seat without a microphone and can be at either service. Please contact Jan Philpy (gjphilpy@gmail.com or ) by May 13 if you are interested. Youth Car Wash - Fundraiser for ELCA Youth Gathering The youth going to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston this summer will be washing cars on Sunday, June 3! If you would like your car washed during worship, please park in the north part of the parking lot. The parking lot will be marked when you drive in, so you will know where to park. All cars in this part of the parking lot will be washed during worship. After worship you can drive away in your clean car (at least on the outside). This fundraiser is a free-will donation. Thank you for your support of the children and youth going to camp this summer! Arts Academy Instructors Needed Fine Arts Academy is looking for people of faith who enjoy doing any kind of art (like, but certainly not limited to, calligraphy, scrapbooking, needlework, communications, food, dance) and would like to share it with students 5 th grade and older. This is a fourday program and you only need to lead one class. Talk with JoHanna Buchholz or Jan Philpy if you are interested. VBS Volunteers Needed Adult and youth volunteers are needed for VBS! Job descriptions and sign up is at 3

4 Wanted for VBS We are in need of empty paper towel or wrapping paper tubes for a Vacation Bible School craft. Please put them in the marked bin by the church office. Sharing with Sheridan Food Pantry May Donations This month we are asking for canned corn, toilet paper, jelly, and spaghetti noodles (no whole wheat). Please place these items in the bins by the office. Thank you! Church Families in Need Take Them A Meal If you know of a member who may appreciate having meals brought to them, please call Karen Rossi at (cell). Children & Family Ministries Sunday School Pentecost Party! Sunday school families are invited to a Pentecost Party this Sunday, May 20. As a family, fold a paper dove, create a windsock, use your wind to make a painting, and enjoy a fruity flame snack. The fun begins at 9:30am in the Fellowship Hall. This is the final Sunday School of the school year! Registration is Now Open! Come to This Changes Everything! VBS to engage in Bible stories, play, sing, create, and snack with friends! VBS is July 9-13, 9am noon for 4-year-olds through incoming 4 th grade. Cost is $40 for the first child, $30 for each additional child. Register at vbspro.events/p/events/stphilip. The St. Philip Arts Academy is July 9-12, 12:30-4:30pm for incoming 5 th grade and older. Cost is $40 for the first student, $30 for each additional student. Students will take part in Bible Theme and Music classes, plus two electives of their choice. Electives may include Drama, Photography, Watercolor, and Woodworking. St. Philip Early Learning Center is hiring an Administrative Financial Assistant. Must be 21 year old and have a warm and friendly personality, and a passion for working with children and serving families in the preschool. Skills include general bookkeeping, clerical duties, proficient on the computer, especially Xcel. Please call Gail at Events Lutheran Chorale The Lutheran Chorale presents their free spring concert All Things New with two performances on Sunday, May 20. The first concert is at 3pm at Lutheran Church of the Cross (28253 Meadow Dr. Evergreen), followed by a second performance at 7:30pm at St. Philip. Enjoy this beautiful and joyful music as the Chorale sings American spiritu- 4

5 als, Four Celtic Mantras, and other hymns. Theater & Theology Our last play of the season, Human Error, will run from May 18 through June 24 in the Galleria Theater at DCPA. Human Error is about the communication gap between two couples who have totally opposite political views and the unlikely but heartfelt friendship that develops between them. Since the Galleria Theater has very limited seating, there will not be a specific date for us to attend this play. If you would like to see Human Error, you may choose your own date and purchase your own ticket(s) online at denvercenter.org, or call the box office at Use the code Theology and you will receive the discounted $30/ticket price.
