1 Happenings the at St. Philip November 10, 2013 Time After Pentecost Welcome! St. Philip Lutheran Church is a community where all people are welcome, may come to know Jesus Christ, become faithful followers empowered by the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ s love into the world. The Women of St. Philip Will Pay It Forward The Women of St. Philip are encouraging all the women of our congregation to save their spare change so we can pool our resources to help other women both locally and abroad who are less fortunate. Collection boxes for your spare change are available at the Welcome Center kiosk. Pay It Forward offerings will be collected in worship on November 16 th and 17 th, at all three worship services. The Pay It Forward donations will then be equally divided among the following three charities: Baby Haven - founded in 1992; supports women, mothers, and infants. They offer intensive addiction treatment with a 90% success rate. Delores Project - formed in 2000; provides shelter and services for homeless women. Women s Development Association - founded in 1997; its mission is to encourage, train, and support women and children in literacy, health education, and economic empowerment. New this year we will share what the Women of St. Philip have done to Pay It Forward. On display in the narthex are items which the various women s ministries have created. Please take a moment to view and appreciate what the women have done. Last, but definitely not least, the Quilting Circle recently received some materials to make a quilt. Thanks to the talents and energy of Margaret Rusch, we now have a beautiful finished quilt! Margaret is paying it forward by offering the quilt to the congregation to help raise funds for the womens ministries. Marilyn Reitz has also donated a beautiful hand crocheted baby blanket. Both items are being offered in a drawing to take place on November 17 th. Tickets cost $1 each, or 6 tickets for $5. Please be a part of this wonderful fundraiser not only will you be supporting the womens ministry efforts, but you may be the lucky person who has their name drawn for the quilt or the blanket! For additional information, please contact Char Nauman at

2 WORSHIP Worship Notes - November 10, 2013 INTRODUCTION: We worship on the first day of the week because our Savior was raised on that day. Every Sunday is a little Easter. This Sunday feels more like Easter than many as the appointed texts celebrate the reality of the resurrection. Live it up this Lord's day. Our God is the God of the living. FIRST READING: Job 19:23-27a Job suffers the loss of children, wealth, and health. Accused by his companions of wrongdoing, he knows himself to be innocent. Here, in the midst of his suffering, Job clings to the radical hope that his vindicator, his redeemer, lives; and that one day he himself will see God. SECOND READING: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, Paul writes to encourage the church at Thessalonica in a time of confusion and opposition. Here, the confusion concerned the return of Christ. Paul writes to those who were allowing their concern over Jesus' imminent return to divert them from the central teachings of the gospel. GOSPEL: Luke 20:27-38 The Sadducees, who do not believe in the resurrection of the dead, try to trap Jesus. They formulate the convoluted case of a serial widow who marries a succession of seven brothers. Jesus responds by teaching about God, to whom all are alive and in whom all relationships are fulfilled. Free Nursery Childcare The nursery is open during worship services and education hour for infants and young children. Ask an usher to direct you. Please Be Courteous Please silence all electronic devices when in the sanctuary. Thank you. 9 DISCIPLESHIP Needed: Confirmation Mentors We need adults to be Confirmation Mentors! St. Philip is starting a mentoring program for our confirmation students. Our goal is to pair up one confirmation student with one adult in the congregation. There are three weeks in Advent this year, so the mentors will meet with their mentee for three consecutive weeks on Wednesday evenings starting on December 4 th. At 7:00pm we will enter the sanctuary for the mid-week advent service. Your responsibility as a mentor will be to get to know the confirmation student you are paired with, talk with them about your faith, pray for them, encourage them, and support them in their life and faith. Interested in being a mentor for one of our confirmation students? This year we have nineteen confirmation students, so we need nineteen mentors. Study of John, Continued Please join discussion leaders Amy Fritsch and Juli Jacobson as they open a study of 1, 2, and 3 John. This class is a continuation of 1 John. John brings the tension of good and evil from an abstract battle to a personal struggle in our daily thoughts and actions. We will continue to study the light and love of Jesus in the final chapters, focusing on the two commandments: Love the Lord with all your heart, and Love your brother as yourself. Please come join us. Everyone is welcome! This class begins Sunday, November 3 rd, and meets in MC-1. Meeting God in Our Daily Life How do we as Lutheran Christians tell the good news about the God-man Jesus? This is a journey, to discover how in the image of God, we tell the story of God s love for us in the beginning and through the life, passion, death and resurrection of his son, Jesus. We will explore how we do this throughout our daily life in Actions, Deeds and Words. We will also examine how we tell God s story though our personal story. This class, taught by Roger Pettner, will meet in MC-2. The next class will begin on Nov. 3 rd. Building Use Need a room for a meeting? Scheduling for building usage is done by the Business Administrator, Linda Goodnough. Call Linda at , or Linda at: lgoodnough@stphilip-co.org. 10 All of us sharing our gifts in service

11 Church Council Report Facility Use After thoughtful consideration and study, the church council voted unanimously to no longer rent portions of the church to for-profit organizations. This action was taken to protect the federal, state, and property tax-exempt status at St. Philip. Two organizations that will be impacted are Knippenberg & Associates, and Lifeline Health Screening. The council wishes to extend their thanks to both organizations for their service to our community. For further information please contact one of your current council members. Church Council Officers: Michael Clough, President Jay Breidenbach, Vice-president Dan Zimmerman, Treasurer Penny Selden, Secretary Members: Janet Wagner Marc DeFur Rebecca Near Susan Shepard Mark Finnerty Thank you to all the men and women who helped gather the fallen leaves this year. A special thanks goes to John Breed, Bill Stouder, Beth and Bill Faerber, Mark Celusniak, Bob Delong, Monica Auch, Dick Rusch, Chuck Krieger and Roger Bracken. The trees are so lovely during the summer and we receive numerous compliments on them throughout the hot months. But as the leaves tumble to the ground over and over and over, it becomes a painstaking and tedious process to clean them all up. Please accept my sincerest thanks for all your time and efforts. St. Philip Lutheran Church would not be the same without you and all your service. May God bless all of you. Linda Goodnough Business Administrator CHURCH NEWS veterans. Poppies for Veterans Day VFW Post 9644 will be selling poppies in the narthex this weekend. Please stop and purchase a poppy to show your support of our Communications Team Task Force Needs Members Are you looking for a way to contribute to our church's ministry but your time is limited? The Communications team needs you! A Communications task force is being formed to update and write several church policies, and writers are urgently needed. The way we connect with people on our website, through our new digital sign, and on Facebook is vital and fluid, but written guidelines need to be established. We also need to take a look at some of our wellentrenched policies and see if they need a touch up. We will be meeting on an ad-hoc basis to discuss, polish and, in some cases, create policy for the church. Sounds exciting, right? Maybe not, but it is important. And joining this task force doesn't involve years-long commitment. So if you have knowledge of the internet, enjoy writing, or just want to help out in some way, please contact the church office and find out how you can join. Contact Linda Goodnough at or her at lgoodnough@stphilip-co.org. Commitment Card Reminder If you haven t yet turned in your commitment pledge card, there is still time to do so. Simply drop it in the offering plate, or send it to the church office. You can even call Business Administrator Linda Goodnough or your information. Please do it as soon as you can - the final budget numbers will be presented at the congregational meeting on November
