1 The Voice of St. Stephen s Location: 2177 First St. Baker City, OR Mailing address: PO Box 1146 Baker City, OR st-stephens@qwestoffice.net The Voice of St. Stephen s Summer is upon us with many events to keep us busy. Check out pg. 8. Please mark your calendars so you don t miss out on any of the fun things to do around Baker City. The Voice of St. Stephen s is taking a break and will return in September. Enjoy your summer! Charlene Chase, Editor crchase@eoni.com Charlene Chase, Editor Kids Camp at Cove June, July, August 2015 The Men s Group expects to sponsor several young people to Camp at Ascension School this summer. If you know a young person that you believe would like to go to camp, please let Joel or Aletha know and we ll get the family the information. The Men s Group uses funds received as breakfast donations just for this purpose. The men who put on our monthly breakfasts pay for the food we eat out of their own pockets, so all of the donations received go toward this outreach program. Each week s camp, discounted by the scholarship given for need by Ascension through Diocese-wide donations, costs $325 per child, half of which the Men s Group pays for children with limited family resources. If you wish to sponsor a child for $325, or contribute to a scholarship for half the remaining tuition of $162.50, it will increase the number of children we can send. Of course, donations of any size are welcome. You can let Joel Bigelow know, or send your donation to the Church office to post to Men s Group account. St. Stephen s is committed to sending as many kids as possible to this wonderful and formative Christian experience. Inside this issue: The Vicar s Moment 2 Sunday School Vacation Bible School 3 3 June Worship Schedule 4 July Worship Schedule 5 August Worship Schedule 6 Prayer Corner Summer Celebrations Summer Schedule 8 7 New Sign for Ascension The work weekend at Ascension school in Cove, Oregon resulted in a beautiful new sign thanks to the hard work of Joel Bigelow, Orrin Bigelow and Richard Thew. The sign was put in place on Saturday over Memorial Day. It fits in very well with the camp.
2 2 The Vicar s Moment Rev. Aletha Bonebrake When I think of Summer, I think of friendship for many reasons, not the least of which is the uncritical bonding and personal growth that mark the free-ranging summers of my childhood. Those were times of great adventures when cousins and siblings and neighbors would put our heads together to build forts in the woods, to row to secret beaches to dig for treasure, to build our wealth by gathering empty bottles at the dance hall very early Sunday morning or picking coffee cans full of blackberries that we sold to our mothers. No one was excluded. If you showed up to play, you were a friend. No one was judged because we were equal in our own eyes, without context of family or wealth. Each individual had an idea or a skill or a special courage or a compassion that benefitted all of us. It was in uncritical friendship that we explored the boundaries of life. We cried when we buried another dead bird in our little cemetery in the woods. We all ate the candy bought with our pooled dance-hall money, even if someone found 12 beer bottles and another only 3. We listened to each other s stories. These days as we move about from place to place and grow to adulthood we don t always have the same friends we met along the way, but we do have deep within us that joy of recognizing true friendship creative, uncritical, giving when it comes our way. Even if only in a brief time together, true friendship can exist. This is one of the great lessons we carry from our time of innocence, how it feels to be truly respected and truly loved just for being. It is to be safe in the friendship of another. It is to be safe in the love of God. I try to approach adult relationships in this same spirit, which of course is the second part of Jesus great commandment. Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. (John 15:12-15) We know it s hard when the process of living robs one of innocence and a shield is held before one s heart. But by valuing a person s needs above your own, you'll be on your way to loving like Jesus. In the process, you're likely to experience true friendship. There can be that same sense of discovery about another, how rich they are in their ideas, how willingly they reveal their true person, and how willingly they accept who you are. That is how children are, that is how Jesus is and that is the safety we have as children of God. Always be a friend to others in the name of Jesus, even when it is difficult. Remember how easy it was when you were a child in the uninhibited fields of summer. There is a joy that is never forgotten, now a part of you. Wear it on your sleeve and in your heart. Be a blessing to someone today.
3 3 A Successful Sunday School Year Takes a Break for the Summer The last day of Sunday school for the year was spent planting flowers in the front of the church. The children also helped make the fruit salad for the Men s Breakfast. Thanks to Beth Bigelow, Jessie Anderson, and Kim Moshier for providing this valuable service for the children of St. Stephen s. Vacation Bible School Coming Late July St. Stephen s is offering Vacation Bible School again this year for the young children of our Parish and other children from the community. It will be held the last week in July, from 9 a.m.-12 noon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July Please note it on your calendars. There will be a flyer sent out to everyone in June to let you know the details. We have planned for three days instead of five to make it more possible for families to take advantage of the long summer weekends travel and to encourage more adults to help out with a limited commitment. Please call Aletha if you would be willing to help in any way we will be having snacks, games, Bible stories, crafts and music.
