1 Happenings the at St. Philip November 3, 2013 All Saints Sunday Welcome! St. Philip Lutheran Church is a community where all people are welcome, may come to know Jesus Christ, become faithful followers empowered by the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ s love into the world. Message From The Pastor Reflecting on your life, who made an impact on your life and your faith when you were young? Your parents? Your friends? A Sunday School teacher? A mentor? When an adult makes a connection with a young person, it makes a huge impact on that young person and their faith life. It is said that youth need five to seven adults in the church to impact and shape a young person's spirituality and faith life. Last week on Reformation Sunday, fourteen confirmation students confirmed their faith. This is always such a joyous and inspiring time as the confirmation students share their faith papers and state their beliefs. One thing was very clear for me this year: the adults in our congregation have a huge impact on our youth! Our youth look up to the adults who have walked with them in their faith. These adults are small group guides, leaders in the congregation, people who have come to speak at confirmation, youth ministry volunteer, and people who just care about them. This was certainly the case for me when I was in confirmation. I was active in the church and there were many adults in the congregation who impacted my life and my faith. These were people who I got to know in the church and didn't think twice about saying hi and asking how my week had gone, what I was up to for the weekend, or how my sporting events were going. Knowing people in the congregation helped me feel welcome and more connected to church. They encouraged me in my walk of faith and prayed for me. One way these conversations can get started is through a mentoring program, which we are starting during Advent. Our goal is to pair up one confirmation student with one adult in the congregation. There are three weeks in Advent this year, so the mentors will meet with their mentee for three weeks on Wednesday evenings starting on December 4 th. We will come together for dinner at 6pm where the confirmation students and mentors will eat together and then after dinner will continue the conversation one on one. At 7:00pm we will enter the sanctuary for the midweek advent service. Continued on page 7 >>>

2 WORSHIP Worship Notes - November 3, 2013 INTRODUCTION: In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. In holy communion God forgives the sins of all the saints. In the assembly today we give thanks for all the saints "who from their labors rest," who have fought the good fight, who have gained the crown. In the same breath we petition our God for the strength to hear and to heed the admonitions of the Lord Jesus in today's gospel. Recalling that we have been sealed by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior's body and blood, we keep on keeping on as God gives us breath, to the praise of God's glory. FIRST READING: Daniel 7:1-3, The book of Daniel was written in the second century B.C.E., when the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes was severely persecuting the Jews. Daniel's vision of the four beasts serves to proclaim the message that human kings will come and go, but the kingdom will ultimately belong to God and to God's people. SECOND READING: Ephesians 1:11-23 After giving thanks for the faith of the Ephesians, Paul prays that they might understand the wisdom, hope, and power of God that is embodied in Jesus Christ. GOSPEL: Luke 6:20-31 In echoes of the prophet Isaiah and Mary's song of praise, Jesus reveals surprising things about who enjoys blessing and who endures woe. He invites his disciples to shower radical love, blessing, forgiveness, generosity, and trust, even to enemies and outsiders. Free Nursery Childcare The nursery is open during worship services and education hour for infants and young children. Ask an usher to direct you. The responsibility of the mentors will be to get to know the confirmation student you are paired up with, talk with them, pray for them, encourage them, and support them in their life and faith. Another way conversations with our young people can get started is by introducing yourself. Our confirmation students need adults in their lives who they can look up to, learn from, and be mentored by when it comes to faith. What do you think? Interested in being a mentor for one of our confirmation students? This year we have nineteen confirmation students, so we need nineteen mentors. If you are interested in being a mentor please sign up at the welcome kiosk and join us for an informational meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 20 th at 7:00pm. If you have any questions, contact Pastor Brad. Also, don't be afraid to start a conversation with the young people and youth in our congregation. They will not only hear your questions, but they will also learn that you care about them. As Matthew, Mark and Luke tell us: "Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.'" May the children come to you and may they be blessed by you. Children s Bulletins & Participation Children are always welcome at our services! During the service they are encouraged to come forward to the altar for a special children s conversation and then again with their offerings. We also have special bulletins for children - please ask the ushers. Family Advent Readers Needed At each Sunday service in the season of Advent, families light a candle in the Advent wreath and read a scripture selection. Families come in all shapes and sizes; all are encouraged to be a part of this St. Philip tradition. 12 DISCIPLESHIP Sunday School Update by Kyle Pitts, Director Sunday school has gone wonderfully so far this year. Our last rotation was all about prayer and hopefully the children went away with a better understanding of how to pray and why we do it. Special thanks go out to our rotation teachers Robynn Gerlach (art), Chris and Melissa Kohn (cooking), and Naomi Doerr (music). We couldn t do it without our awesome volunteers. Give them a hug and a thank-you if you get a chance. Our next rotation theme is Feeding the 5000, also known as The Boy s Lunch. Jesus accepted a boy s simple yet generous gift of two fish and five loaves of bread. Jesus blessed this gift and turned it into a feast for more than five thousand people. To the St. Philip congregation: Thanks again for sharing your precious gifts from God with us so we can share God s love with them. Facing the Mourning This interactive support group has been designed by Heartlight Center of Denver for people of all ages, types of death, and length of grieving. The group is designed to help with the grieving process by using visual and thoughtprovoking tools. During the four sessions, you will be shown tools, ideas, and creative projects which can help you as you travel through the mourning process. You will be offered an opportunity for learning and self-discovery to keep your loved one s memory alive for you and your family. The group will meet on Sundays, from 9:30-10:30am on November 10 th, 24 th, and December 8 th and 15 th in the Fireside Room. Pastor Nathan will be the group facilitator. Sign-up sheets are at the adult education table in the narthex. Questions? Please contact Pastor Nathan. Study of John, Continued Please join discussion leaders Amy Fritsch and Juli Jacobson as they open a study of 1, 2, and 3 John. This class is a continuation of 1 John. John brings the tension of good and evil from an abstract battle to a personal struggle in our daily thoughts and actions. We will continue to study the light and love of Jesus in the final chapters, focusing on the two commandments: Love the Lord with all your heart, and Love your brother as yourself. Please come join us. Everyone is welcome! This class begins Sunday, November 3 rd, and meets in MC-1. The Bible: A Redemption Story Jerry Jantz s class on The Bible: A Redemption Story continues for two more weeks, until November 10 th. This class asks the question: How are we to think about redemption? We are told that the Bible story is about redemption from sin, and that we experience this salvation partially now. So what is that experience? How are we to know it? Come and participate in this effort to uncover through a more in-depth study of the key Bible stories a way to think and talk about redemption. This class meets in MC-3. Meeting God in Our Daily Life How do we as Lutheran Christians tell the good news about the God-man Jesus? This is a journey, to discover how in the image of God, we tell the story of God s love for us in the beginning and through the life, passion, death and resurrection of his son, Jesus. We will explore how we do this throughout our daily life in Actions, Deeds and Words. We will also examine how we tell God s story though our personal story. This class, taught by Roger Pettner, will meet in MC-2. The next class will begin on Nov. 3 rd. 12 All of us sharing our gifts in service

13 EVANGELISM CHURCH NEWS Join the World Hunger Team ELCA World Hunger works with Lutheran churches to help break the cycle of hunger and poverty. If you are interested in joining the SPLC Hunger Team, please contact Nancy Oelz at or at Thank You for Supporting CROP Walk A heartfelt thank you to all the walkers and other supporters of this year s Foothills CROP Walk! Many of our youth, both Pastor Brad and Roseanna, Pastor Nathan and Naomi, along with a number of the congregation made it out to Lions Park to walk in the drizzle in support of hunger issues at home and around the world. There were at least 35 walkers this year, making it the best representation from St. Philip in recent years. A special thank you to all the walkers from this year s confirmation Class! While the final tally from the congregation won t be in for a week, our best estimates are that it will be over $1,300. We are truly blessed to be part of such a loving and supportive church family that cares about making an impact in the community. Sue and Brian Counterman Good Gifts Are you looking for gift ideas? If so, check out the Good Gifts catalog in the narthex, or go online to Commitment Card Reminder If you haven t yet turned in your commitment pledge card, there is still time to do so. Simply drop it in the offering plate, or send it to the church office. You can even call Business Administrator Linda Goodnough or your information. Please do it as soon as you can - the final budget numbers will be presented at the congregational meeting on November 17. Communications Team Task Force Needs Members Are you looking for a way to contribute to our church's ministry but your time is limited? The Communications team needs you! A Communications task force is being formed to update and write several church policies, and writers are urgently needed. The way we connect with people on our website, through our new digital sign, and on Facebook is vital and fluid, but written guidelines need to be established. We also need to take a look at some of our wellentrenched policies and see if they need a touch up. We will be meeting once a month for the next six months to discuss, polish and, in some cases, create policy for the church. Sounds exciting, right? Maybe not, but it is important. And joining this task force doesn't involve years-long commitment. So if you have knowledge of the internet, enjoy writing, or just want to help out in some way, please contact the church office and find out how you can join. Contact Linda Goodnough at or her at lgoodnough@stphilip-co.org. Poppies for Veterans Day VFW Post 9644 will be selling poppies in the narthex on Sunday, November 10 th. Please stop and purchase a poppy to show your support of our veterans. All of us sharing our gifts in service 13

Our event will be held on Saturday morning, June 28, 2014 with a 7:30am shotgun start. Even if you don t call yourself a good golfer, please save the date and plan on joining us for fun and fellowship. The luncheon at the golf course will be superb, the fun and laughter shared by all is infectious, and the chance to bid on our amazing auction items will make it a wonderful experience. And remember, friends and family are always welcome come one, come all! For more information, please contact Linda Goodnough at or at: lgoodnough@stphilip-co.org. 3 rd Annual St. Philip Golf Tournament & Silent Auction
