1 the Happenings January 19, 2014 at St. Philip Second Sunday after Epiphany Welcome! St. Philip Lutheran Church is a community where all people are welcome, may come to know Jesus Christ, become faithful followers empowered by the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ s love into the world. Church Council Commissioning This weekend we are commissioning the council you have elected to serve in the leading of our congregation s ministry. No congregation will be healthier than its elected leaders. Leaders set the tone and direction for the organization or institution they serve. You know about this in the secular world, and it is no different in the Church! I am excited about the leaders you have elected to direct the ministry of our congregation in the coming year. They are: Jay Breidenbach President Jay Breidenbach, President Susan Shepard, Vice-President Carol Wall, Secretary Dan Zimmerman, Treasurer Marc DeFur, Liaison to Worship Ministry Mark Finnerty, Liaison to Community Care & Compassion Ministry Aurora Keltner, Liaison to Discipleship Ministry Rebecca Near, Liaison to Family Life Ministry Janet Wagner, Liaison to Evangelism & Global Outreach Ministry Susan Shepard Vice President Marc DeFur Worship Dan Zimmerman Treasurer Carol Wall Secretary Continued on page 7 >>> Janet Wagner Evangelism Becky Near Family Life Mark Finnerty Community Care & Compassion Aurora Keltner Discipleship

2 WORSHIP Worship Notes - January 19, 2014 INTRODUCTION: Today's gospel opens with further reflection on Jesus' baptism. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and the one anointed by the Spirit. In the liturgy we come and see Christ revealed among us in word and meal. We go forth to invite others to come and worship the Holy One, and to receive the gifts of grace and peace made known among us. FIRST READING: Isaiah 49:1 7 Here the servant Israel speaks for herself and acknowledges herself as God's secret weapon. Called before her birth like Jeremiah and John the Baptist, the servant is not only to restore Israel itself. The servant's ultimate assignment is to bring news of God's victory to the ends of the earth. God in faithfulness has chosen Israel for this task. PSALM: Psalm 40:1 11 SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 1:1 9 Though God's church in Corinth is a fractious congregation beset with many conflicts, Paul opens this letter by spotlighting the multiple ways God has enriched and sustained its life as part of the divine call into the fellowship of our Lord Jesus Christ. GOSPEL: John 1:29 42 John the Baptist's witness to Jesus initiates a chain of testimony as his disciples begin to share with others what they have found. PRELUDE Coreen Wells, guest organist WORDS OF WELCOME & MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP The musical call to worship begins the service, encouraging us to quietly prepare our hearts and minds to receive the Word of God. *CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS Please stand as you are able and face the baptismal font at the rear of the sanctuary. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the minister begins. P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. C: Amen. P: Let us come into the light of Christ, confessing our need for God s mercy. Silence is kept for reflection. P: Holy and faithful God, C: We so often choose our own way instead of yours. We think we can evade your commandments. We have spoken in ways that kill, strayed with our hearts, betrayed friends, and hated enemies. We have broken our promises. Search us deeply and create us anew. Lift the heavy burden of our sin and free us to follow your way of life. Amen. P: Call upon me, says the Lord, and I will answer. Our God has come among us to loose every bond and set us free from all that weighs us down. Receive the forgiveness of all your sins in the name of Jesus Christ, our crucified and risen Savior. 7 >>>Continued from page 1 Please see the organizational flow chart for our congregation below to see how our ministries are structured to accomplish the work God has given us to do! Under each of the five Ministry Areas listed above are numerous ministry teams. This is where the work of our congregation truly gets done. People like YOU are serving on these teams! Leaders provide leadership and direction. They set the emotional tone for our congregation! The work of our congregation then gets done when everyone shares their gifts in service! Today as we commission our leaders in a public worship service they will promise to be faithful in their specific areas of service. They will promise to be examples of faith active in love. At the same time, you will promise to pray for and support these leaders. You will promise to join with them in the mutual ministry that Christ has given to all who are baptized. May God bless the work of our hands in the coming year, as we seek to serve Him and the world He loves! In Christ, Pastor Nathan ST. PHILIP ORGANIZATION 7

8 DISCIPLESHIP COMMUNITY CARE REDEMPTION and the Book of Revelation A class by Jerry Jantz Starting January 12 th at 9:30am in MC 4/5 One of the most difficult to read of all the New Testament writings, the book of Revelation is also perhaps one of the most fruitful. What is it about? The second coming? Life in heaven? A last judgment? World catastrophe? Its metaphors and symbols beg for interpretation and almost force you to find personal meaning in its words. There is no single interpretation of such a work, but there are tools available that scholars have developed to guide us in our efforts to understand this book end to the Bible. What does it mean to have Christ come in Power? Surely I m coming soon. Come, Lord Jesus! Lutheran Liturgy 101 Taught by Dr. Nancy Beyer Class starting January 12 th at 9:30am in MC3 Come, now is the time to learn The Gospel of Matthew Taught by Pastor Nathan and Juli Jacobson Class starting January 12 th at 9:30am in Fireside Rm. Look for the sign up sheets at the Discipleship table in the narthex. Senior High Youth Group Youth in high school, this is for YOU! Senior High Youth Group is a place for youth to get together, hang out, play games and have a short devotion. We have a blast getting together every Sunday from 7:00-8:30pm in the youth room. Feel free to join us any time you can! The next youth group will be tonight!. Contact Pastor Brad if you have any questions at bdoty@stphilip-co.org. 8 Upcoming Blood Drive Mark your calendars! On Friday, March 28 th, the Children s Hospital Blood Mobile will visit St. Philip. The goal is to collect 32 pints of whole blood for the care and cure of the young ones at Children s Hospital. Important to remember: A donor is eligible when at least 56 days have lapsed since your last donation. The 56 days is critical for allowing you to replenish your body s blood supply. That means that January 31 st is a critical date if you wish to be eligible to donate on March 28 th. Signup sheets for the March 28 th visit will appear in the narthex in February. Stay well, save your blood, and please donate in March! Souper Sundays Some of us are hoping to see the Broncos playing on February 2 nd in the Super Bowl. In the meantime, Community Care and Compassion is hoping to see our SOUPER SUNDAY box filled and re-filled with cans of soup for the local food banks. The need for food continues. Contact Nancy Oelz or Karen Otto if you have questions Family Promise Rotation Schedule Mark your calendars for our 2014 Family Promise rotations: March 9-16 May July 27-August 3 October 5-12 December Volunteer opportunities abound: food prep, donate supplies, van driving, hosting, and of course, cash gifts.
