1 A U G U S T Savior Divine Lutheran Church S. 88TH Ave. Palos Hills, IL FROM THE PASTOR Sunday Worship 9:30 a.m. Working toward a Healthy Lifestyle with the Daniel Plan The Discipleship Group has completed their study on the book From Tablet to Table and has decided to launch into the book The Daniel Plan for its next study that will resume after the summer. This book provides the Christian with a way to look at one s life in a holistic way and achieving growth in these areas. The main topics are Faith, Fitness, Food, Focus, and Friends. The book was written by Pastor Rick Warren, whom some of you may recall wrote The Purpose Driven Life. The Daniel Plan came out of Pastor s Warren s own desire to improve his own well-being and to do it with members of his congregation. He also invited several physicians to help him with this project and their ideas appear in this book. You might be wondering about the title. Reference is made to the diet that Daniel was on: yes, it is the Daniel of the book of the Bible that bears his name. The diet that he undertook made him stronger and healthier than those who ate the king s rich food! If you are wondering about what foods he ate, please read Daniel 1 in your Bible! This book comes with some invaluable resources that you can find on the Website: You will find a lot of helpful tips as well as testimonials. You also can establish your own account. 2 Discipleship Emphasis The season of would have us think of how the Holy Spirit is at work in our world today and especially in our surrounding communities. Where do you see the in-breaking of God s kingdom today? Where do you see hope being given to people, advocacy is being done, or acts of kindness are taking place? You are being asked to sharpen your spiritual eyes. Please take note of what you observe or what you might read in the local papers. You can record in your journal and also bring to my attention. To go a step further, do you see how you might take a photo of such work being done and submit to the church office? We will find a way to display these photos. Pastor Marty 2 God s Work, Our Hands We Need Your Help for September 9 Day of Service As an added way to help us to live out our discipleship, Savior Divine is working to embark on a day of service, which is being planned for Sunday, September 9. On this Sunday, congregations nationwide in the ELCA are asked to get involved in service under the theme: God s Works, Our Hands. Two opportunities have come our way. One is with the Beds-Plus program, which uses churches to be shelters for the homeless. We can assist by doing some cleaning at one of the shelters on September 9 in order to help prepare for when the shelter opens officially for the season. The other opportunity is for us to assist at Movie Night at the Hickory Hills Park District on Saturday, September 8, which would involve helping to sell concessions from 7:00 9:30 p.m. If you would be willing to help in either of these projects, please let either Vicki Doherty or Pastor Marty know by August 5. We need to let these organizations know of our commitment in order to become engaged in these service opportunities. T-shirts can also be purchased for this project that have the words God s Works, Our Hands. The cost of the T-shirt is $5. We would need to know this also by August 5th. Prayer Requests When requesting prayers be said for friends or family please make sure you fill out the Prayer Request sheet on the table in the entry way. It is important that you fill out the sheet in it s entirety so the prayer group can follow up later on to see if the person still needs or wants to continue to be on the list. Elsie s Food Pantry Items needed by the Pantry include macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, canned fruit, and cereal. Other types of food are also welcome. The food may be placed in the Amish Pie Safe. Also they need plastic grocery bags. These bags can also be left in the Pie Safe.

3 3 Metropolitan Chicago Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Death of the Rev. Victor L. Brandt The Rev. Victor L. Brandt died on Tuesday, July 17, Memorial visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018, at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst, IL The memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church, 7300 Division St., River Forest, IL (pre-service visitation at 10 a.m.). Interment of both Pastor Brandt and Irene will take place immediately following the service in the Grace Memorial Garden. There will be a luncheon at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: Rev. Victor L. Brandt Seminary Scholarship Fund, ELCA Endowment Fund, 8765 West Higgins Rd., Chicago, IL Grace Lutheran Church, 7300 Division St., River Forest, IL Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, 1001 E. Touhy Ave. #50, Des Plaines, IL Pastor Brandt, a graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, was ordained on July 3, 1944, with a first call to Bessemer, Michigan. Subsequent pastorates were in Baltimore, Maryland and Williamsville, New York, followed by a 26-year ministry from at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Palos Heights. As part of the founding membership of the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Church (AELC), Pastor Brandt served 10 years as Vice-President and then as the final Bishop of the 133 congregations of the English Synod (one of the four Synods of the AELC). His role in the formation of the ELCA was to serve as the AELC designate on the three -member Constitution Task Force, followed by a subsequent term on the Church's first Board of Appeals. On the local level, he served on the Metropolitan Chicago Synod s Candidacy Committee. His interim pastorates were at Savior Divine in Palos Hills, Good Shepherd in Naperville, Salem in Peoria, Epiphany in Elmhurst, and Grace in River Forest; as well as with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois in Church Relations.

4 4 Helping Make Our Service Flow You will note that there have been some blank spots in the section of the Gospel News titled Worship Schedule. This is due to the unavailability of people to help with these tasks. Most of the jobs are easy to do and only take a few minutes. The people doing them will continue but if more people are available the less often each person has to be available. Please look at the titles of the jobs and decide if you could or want to do any of them. Assistants: Need to be present on the Sunday they are assigned and come to church a little early to talk to Pastor Marty about the service. Altar Guild: This person would need to come to church at least minutes early to pour the wine and set up the items on the credence table. He or she would also have to clean the items after church and put them away. Handle the Remote: This involves watching the screens to see when to click to the next screen. If you know computers, you can sit at the laptop and handle it like Cathi Predl does. Pastor would show you what is involved in this job. Bread: We need more people to make sure there is bread for communion. Presently there are only 4 people bringing bread. You do not have to bake bread but can buy it from the store. It involves getting to church at least 15 minutes early so the altar guild person can be seated before church. Ushers: Presently we only have 4 assigned ushers and definitely need more. As you can see the ushers come in a little early so they can greet the congregation. They also guide people to the altar during communion. Bus Ministry Our bus ministry fund has been dwindling down. We no longer get the grant we used to get to fund part of our cost for the bus. If anyone would care to donate to this cause it would be greatly appreciated. This is a special service offered to those who do not have cars or other transportation to come to church.

5 5 What I want my church to be My church is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the tasks of being all the things that I want my church to be. CHURCH PICNIC Our annual church pot-luck picnic for our combined churches will be held this year on Sunday, September 16 th, following a combined worship service at 10:30 that day. Save the date for a fun-filled afternoon! Favorites water balloon toss and egg-toss are planned for outdoors. Driving marshmallows from a tee is planned also, as well as other outdoor games for adults and children--such as bean bags and ladderball. Bingo and whatever games you would like to bring are scheduled for indoors. A donation of any size to the Food Pantry will make you eligible to participate in the drawing for one of our many traditional door prizes. Our committee is hard at work to make the picnic a memorable event for all ages. Speak to one the committee members if you have new ideas or suggestions.
