1 the Happenings at St. Philip April 5-6, 2014 Fifth Sunday in Lent Welcome! St. Philip Lutheran Church is a community where all people are welcome, may come to know Jesus Christ, become faithful followers empowered by the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ s love into the world. Milestones in Our Lives What was the last milestone you celebrated in your life? What is the next milestone in your life? God walks with us throughout each stage of our life: Exodus 13:21-22: "The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people." BLESSING FOR ALL: May - God be in your head and in your thinking; Amen! God be in your eyes and in your seeing; God be in your ears and in your listening; God be in your mouth and in your speaking; God be in your heart and in your understanding; God be in your hands and in your serving; God be in your years and all the milestones of life; God be with us as we walk along side one another.

2 WORSHIP Worship Notes - April 6, 2014 INTRODUCTION: In today's gospel Jesus reveals his power over death by raising Lazarus from the dead. The prophet Ezekiel prophesies God breathing new life into dry bones. To those in exile or living in the shadows of death, these stories proclaim God's promise of resurrection. In baptism we die with Christ that we might also be raised with him to new life. At the Easter Vigil we will welcome new sisters and brothers at the baptismal font, as we renew our baptismal promises. FIRST READING: Ezekiel 37:1 14 Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones is a promise that Israel as a nation, though dead in exile, will live again in their land through God's life-giving spirit. Three times Israel is assured that through this vision they will know that "I am the Lord." SECOND READING: Romans 8:6 11 For Paul, Christian spirituality entails living in the reality of the Holy Spirit. The driving force behind our actions and values is not our sinful desire for self-satisfaction but the very Spirit by which God raised Jesus from the dead and will also raise us from the dead. GOSPEL: John 11:1 45 Jesus is moved to sorrow when his friend Lazarus falls ill and dies. Then, in a dramatic scene, he calls his friend out of the tomb and restores him to life. 9 FROM THE PASTOR Milestones in Our Lives What was the last milestone you celebrated in your life? What is the next milestone in your life? All of us celebrate milestones in their lives; some we look forward to and others come way to fast. Milestones are actions or events that mark a significant change or stage in development; they represent an ending and a new beginning of an event or stage in a person's life. Milestones are some times celebrated in the church and some times at home or in the community. The church uses milestones to pass on faith and join our story with God's story. There are many more milestones than just birth, death, engagements, and weddings like local papers list. Milestones help us to connect the events of our lives with God's biblical stories to help us realize God is traveling with us throughout our life. The church celebrates many milestones in our lives to help us see God in our lives: - Birth - Baptism - Entry into Sunday School - Learning the Lord's Prayer - Learning the Creed - Learning the Teachings of Our Faith - Presentation of Bibles - First Communion - Confirmation - Going to Camp - Graduation - Marriage - Moving - New Home - Death There are many more milestones that we go through in our lives that people celebrate or at least recognize. It is always good to recognize the milestones we have reached because it is a new time in our lives and it may not be an easy transition. This is one of the times of the year when many people reach different milestones in their lives. Especially this year, we have had many baptism in our church. Today, we celebrate the baptism of Lorren Ballard. During this season of Lent our Sunday school children have shared their faith with us in worship. After memorizing and studying the Apostles Creed, the 4 th graders will lead us in the Apostles Creed in worship today. All of the children have shared their faith with us over the past several weeks: the 3 rd graders shared the Ten Commandments, the 2 nd graders shared a favorite Bible verse and received their Bibles, and the pre-k and 1 st graders sang for us. Today we begin our first communion classes for the fifth graders. They will learn about Holy Communion and what it means to us as Christians. They will receive their first communion on Maundy Thursday, the day we celebrate the Lord's Supper as Jesus shared in the Passover meal with his disciples. In a month we will celebrate and recognize our high school seniors as they graduate from high school and enter into the next stage of their life. Our college seniors will be graduating from college as well and will begin the next stage of their lives. The milestones we go through in our lives are a big deal and we should recognize them. This is harder to do as people get older because some of these milestones as seen as losses rather than new beginnings; for example, moving into an assisted living center or losing hair due to chemo. However, there are many wonderful milestones to celebrate as well: anniversaries, retirement, and grandchildren. As you celebrate your next milestone, may you be reminded of God's presence in your life and how God has helped you through your past milestones. May God be with your whole being as you walk along side one another throughout your life. Grace and Peace, Pr. Brad Doty 9

12 CHURCH NEWS St. Philip IS Making a Difference Thank you to all of you who made last year a banner year. Your generosity will make a big difference in the lives of so many people locally and throughout the world. Last November at the congregation meeting we told you that we had a very good year and that some of those extra dollars would be shared and given to benevolence organizations. Council members were asked for their nominations insofar as how to distribute these funds. At the last council meeting, votes were taken and the decision was made to distribute the excess funds in the following manner: $1,000 Rocky Mountain Synod (for their new facilities) $1,000 Mosaic of Denver. This is an organization formed by joining Bethphage and Martin Luther Homes, both Lutheran service organizations, for the disabled. It provides a life of possibilities for people with intellectual disabilities. $1,000 Love, INC (In the Name of Christ) is a local service group which organizes volunteers for local needs. Some of the special programs they offer are diaper distributions for the low-income families, severe weather housing for the homeless, financial counseling, a second-hand store and transportation. $1,500 Seeds of Hope. The Rocky Mountain Synod continues to look for ways we can support our brothers and sisters in Madagascar. The Malagasy Lutheran church has requested motorcycles for pastors who serve multiple congregations and cannot reach some of those congregations due to a lack of transaction. This money will purchase one motorcycle for these pastors. $3,000 Sharing with Sheridan. This is our new ministry this year. We are looking to open a food bank that would both collect food through partnering congregations and purchase food through Food Bank of the Rockies for.06 cents per pound. We are looking to use free space from Valley view Church of God as our distribution point. Your willingness to say yes to God and to serve His people will not be forgotten by Him. Thank you for your faithfulness and generosity. 3 rd Annual St. Philip Golf Outing & Silent Auction Are you doing your spring cleaning? Can you find something to donate to the St. Philip silent auction to be held during the month of June in conjunction with the golf outing? Please bring auctionable items to the church office. Easter Dinner at St. Philip The Otto family is interested in hosting an Easter dinner at St. Philip around 1:30pm on Easter Sunday. Are you interested in joining us? Please call Karen Otto at or at karenlotto@msn.com. 12 Save the Date! 13 PROPERTY TEAM UPDATES Thank You to Our Super Property Team A huge and very sincere thank you goes out to the following people for their superhuman efforts in painting the inside entryway by the administrative offices (including down the hall and around the drinking fountain): Duane Eatinger, John Schutt, Larry Edwards, Ray Peterson, Dave Bolt, Bill Stouder, John Breed and Doug Murphy. These gentlemen freely donated approximately 30 hours of their time last week preparing, painting, and cleaning the areas. It looks so much brighter and more welcoming. Thank you to Susan Shepard for selecting the color, and a special thanks to Larry and Ray who even spent many hours on Saturday finishing it all up. Gentlemen: you are masters at what you do and St. Philip is very blessed to have you here working with us. Thank you. The Light at the End of the Tunnel... The electronic LED property sign is now in place! There is some finishing work to be accomplished, but the hardest part is over. St. Philip is very blessed to have so many good men here who freely volunteered their time and talents during this process. It is time to recognize and acknowledge these gentlemen and all the work they have accomplished. Charlie Petersen thank you for the CAD drawings and working on all the changes that were sent to you as we learned more and more. Without your work we couldn t have gotten this project off the ground. Larry Edwards you have been awesome. Your engineering expertise and your project management skills have been the key for this entire project. I promise this will be the last sign we install. John Schutt thank you for all your brains and your brawn and knowing who to contact and how to get things done in a crunch. You are simply amazing. And a very special thanks to the gentlemen (Larry Edwards, John Schutt, John Breed, Bill Stouder, Dave Bolt, Duane Eatinger and Ray Peterson) who moved these signs twice at a weight of almost 2,000 lbs. and who spent hours drilling holes, cementing bolts, working with the crane to place the sign, etc., etc. etc. The list of tasks seemed never ending. You overcame obstacle after obstacle that day and never gave up even when that powerful wind was blowing. So please accept our sincere thanks for everything you have done for St. Philip and know that we feel very grateful to have you here. All of us sharing our gifts in service 13
