1 Happenings the at St. Philip June 30, 2013 Sixth Sunday after Pentecost Welcome! St. Philip Lutheran Church is a community where all people are welcome, may come to know Jesus Christ, become faithful followers empowered by the Holy Spirit, and are sent with Christ s love into the world. Message From The Pastor And We're Off! As you are reading this Nikki, Roseanna and I are on an airplane from Paris to Madagascar. We got to the DIA at 8:15 on Saturday morning and we will arrive in Madagascar at 10:10pm on Sunday, which is 1:10pm (Sunday) in Denver. The time change from Denver to Madagascar is nine hours. We have been preparing for this trip for many months and we are thankful it is finally here. We are excited to meet the people of Madagascar, form relationships with our brothers and sisters in Madagascar, experience worship in the Malagasy Lutheran Church (FML), and be with them as people of God as we learn from them and they learn from us. It has been fun trying to get ready for this trip with getting the shots and medication we need and purchasing things we have never had to purchase before like a mosquito net. The really fun part has been trying to pack our luggage. We can take a 50lb bag or two to get to Madagascar, but we can only have a total of 44lbs, no matter how many bags you have, when we fly in Madagascar. One of the things we are already taking from this trip is that it isn't about what we have or how often we wear the same clothes, but it is about being present with those we are with; in this case, our brothers and sisters in Madagascar. It is about the people we meet and the relationships we form. The first couple of days we will be in the capital of Madagascar: Antananarivo and then we will travel by bus to Mahajanga. This trip is full of many different excursions, meetings, activities, visits, and experiences. We hope that you will travel with us as you are in Denver. We have created a couple of pages on our website that shares a lot of information about our trip like our itinerary. You can follow where our group is going and keep us in prayer. Take a look at our new website at Continued on page 7>>>
2 WORSHIP Worship Notes - June 30, 2013 INTRODUCTION We have no good apart from God. That makes our Lord's call to follow him an invitation to freedom. This is freedom to revel in the Spirit's fruits: love, joy, peace, patience, and the like. This is the path of life. FIRST READING: 1 Kings 19:15-16, In the story preceding today's reading, the prophet Elijah flees for his life to the security of God's mountain. There the Lord reveals to Elijah that there are still other faithful people in Israel and commissions him to anoint new leaders, including his own successor, Elisha. SECOND READING: Galatians 5:1, For Paul, the freedom Christ gives is not permission to do whatever we want. It is the invitation to be what we could not be otherwise. The power and guidance of Christ's Holy Spirit produce a different kind of life, one marked by the fruit of this Holy Spirit. GOSPEL: Luke 9:51-62 Jesus is unwavering in his commitment to his mission in Jerusalem and will not be swayed by pettiness. In a series of striking cases in point, he calls his disciples to a similar single-mindedness. The sign, which will be LED, will allow us to more effectively reach out to our community, and tell them of all the events happening here at St. Philip. The tournament informational brochure is available at the Welcome Center kiosk. Be sure to pick one up and start working on developing your foursome! Lunch is provided as part of the golf registration fee. Monetary sponsorships are also available for each of the golf holes, as well as each golf cart. Please consider being a sponsor. The silent auction will be greatly enhanced and expanded this year. Items will be set up and bidding will begin on Rally Sunday, September 8 th. But that s not the end! After the tournament, auction items will be once more brought to the church, and you will have one last chance to get in your winning bid before the auction closes at noon on Sunday, September 22 nd. You do not have to be present to win. Winners will be notified via on Monday, September 23, and prizes may be claimed at the church office. If you have any items you wish to donate for the silent auction, please contact Linda Goodnough. Hand-made or one of a kind items are always popular and most welcome. It is going to be on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm. The majority of the time we will be meeting at the church, but about once a month we will be off site. There will be a different theme each week, so make sure you check out the Happenings, website, calendar or with Pastor Brad each week to see where we are meeting and if you should wear anything special (ex. a swim suit or clothes you don't mind getting wet for Water Wars). Have you wanted to get involved in a Bible study that will lead you into a closer relationship with God? Then we have just the one for you! Beginning in the fall of this year, St. Philip will initiate a new comprehensive Bible study called The Story. Offered on Monday nights from 7:00pm 8:30pm (September-May), we will come together to learn how God works in our lives. You won t want to miss this opportunity! Set aside this time for your spiritual growth. Sign up in the narthex at the Adult Education table or through the church s website, Vacation Bible School is Coming! July 8-12, 2013 Now is the time to sign up for Vacation Bible School! Children in grades PreK through 6th can attend. They pulled weeds, installed metal edging, pulled out old rocks & mulch and put in new, cleaned out trash from under trees and bushes, swept the parking lot, buried sprinkler lines, whacked weeds, trimmed trees & shrubs, raked up pine cones and needles the list goes on and on, but they got a huge amount done! They even helped move rocks we are calling them our little rock stars! The list of tasks was rather daunting, but the results of all that effort is that our parking lot and all the grounds close to the building now look refreshed and tidy, and pleasing to the eye. No dramatic changes, but altogether it shows the congregation s pride and clearly demonstrates that we are trying to be good stewards of our resources. Thank you everyone, for all your hard work!
