2 WORSHIP Worship Notes - May 18, 2014 INTRODUCTION: As we continue to celebrate the fifty days of Easter, today's gospel includes Jesus' promise that he goes to prepare a place for his followers in his Father's house. Our baptism commissions us to share Jesus' mission in the world. As First Peter reminds us, we are a holy people, called to proclaim the one who called us out of darkness into light. In words and deeds we bear witness to the risen Christ our way, our truth, our life. FIRST READING: Acts 7:55 60 Stephen was one of the seven men chosen by the apostles to serve tables so that the apostles could be free to serve the word (Acts 6:1-6). Stephen does more than distribute food, however. For his preaching of God s word, he becomes the first martyr of the faith. SECOND READING:1 Peter 2:2 10 Christ is the cornerstone of God s saving work and the foundation of our lives. We are God s chosen, holy people who continuously celebrate and declare the mercy of God we experience through Jesus Christ. GOSPEL: John 14:1 14 On the night that he is to be arrested, Jesus shares final words with his disciples. As the one through whom God is known, he promises to go before them and act on their behalf. Please Be Courteous Please silence all electronic devices when in the sanctuary. Thank you. 11 EVANGELISM ELCA Sr. High Mission Trip Fundraisers The senior high youth are going to Anapra, Mexico July 27-August 2 to build homes with Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. There the youth will build houses for families in need with Casas por Cristo. To help defray the cost of the trip, the youth will be conducting fundraisers in May and June. Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser You may have seen the church lawn bedecked with pink plastic flamingoes last Sunday when the youth kicked off their flamingo fundraiser! Here s how Flamingo Flocking works: The youth choose someone from the congregation as a candidate for flocking. They quietly and surreptitiously place the flamingoes on that person s lawn in the evening. The youth will happily remove the flamingoes the next day...for a suggested donation of $10. OR...you can designate someone to be flocked, and pay a suggested donation of $10 to make it happen. OR...if you want to insure that you are NOT flocked, you may purchase anti-flocking insurance, also for a suggested donation of $10. Check out the mission trip table in the narthex for the appropriate forms. Flamingo flocking ends on June 1 st. Car Wash The final fundraiser will take place on June 1 st with a car wash during and after worship. Disaster Relief Several tornadoes have ripped through multiple states causing loss of life and massive devastation. Hundreds of people must now find a way to rebuild their lives, homes and communities after the tornadoes destroyed almost everything they had. Your help is needed to bring hope to our sisters and brothers in need. Lutheran Disaster Response is at work, assessing the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by the tornadoes. Working with our extensive network of ELCA members, local congregations, synods and Lutheran Social Service affiliates in the affected area we will respond wherever we are needed. We are a church that rolls up its sleeves and gets to work. We know it will be a long road to recovery, and your gifts are needed now to begin coordinating volunteers, rebuilding homes and offering spiritual and emotional care to those in need. Gifts designated to "U.S. Tornadoes" through Lutheran Disaster Response will be used entirely to help survivors of tornadoes rebuild their lives and livelihoods. You can help provide comfort, healing and hope in the midst of destruction. Go to to donate online or find out how you can help. The ELCA Malaria Campaign in Action Your gifts will aid in: Distributing insecticide-treated nets and making sure they are properly used. Educating female leaders on the basics of malaria cause, prevention, and treatment. Training health workers to diagnose and treat malaria at the household level and report outcomes via mobile phone. Visit for details on how you can help. 11
