Thank you for your interest and responses. It seems that no one knows for sure quite how butterflies got their name since the word has been in the English Language for centuries (the word was "buterfleoge in Old English, which means butterfly in our English today.) Because it is such an old word, we don't really know who or when someone decided it was to call it A Butterfly. One story is that they were named so because it was thought that butterflies, or witches in the shape of butterflies, stole milk and butter. Someone else wondered if the word was really meant to be Flutterby. Researched by Barry Cappello (St Andrews). Other research by Ron B (St John the Baptist) found that it is generally thought that the possible explanation is that in England the common brimstone butterfly is butter coloured and Author Samuel Johnson suggests that butterflies and the churning of butter are the simultaneous harbingers of Spring. Ron also noted similar information that butterflies would feed on uncovered milk or butter. (This is supported as the German word for butter translates to Milk Thief. Thank you to all who took an interest. God Speaking The man whispered "God speak to me" and a Meadowlark sang BUT THE MAN DID NOT HEAR. The man yelled "God speak to me". And the thunder and lightning rolled across the sky. BUT THE MAN DID NOT LISTEN The man looked around and said "God, let me see you" and a star shined brightly. BUT THE MAN DID NOT SEE The man shouted "God show me a miracle" and a life was born BUT THE MAN DID NOT NOTICE So the man cried out in despair "Touch me God, and let me know you are here. Whereupon God reached down and touched the man. BUT THE MAN BRUSHED THE BUTTERFLY AWAY AND WALKED ON ANON But the message is "Don't miss out on the blessings of the Lord just because they are not packaged in the way you expect." 4 St. Boniface Mothers Union Our regular events: Tuesday 11 th October, Coffee Morning 10am 11.30am. Wednesday 26 th October, Prize Bingo, eyes down at 7.30pm. Fr Bob Parish Ladies Group In August, sadly, our outdoors programme for this year came to an end. However, we were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day, in the midst of a somewhat bleak summer, when Nigel Smallbones took us on a guided tour of Berry Head. We are becoming extremely proficient in our knowledge of the archaeology, history and the flora of our region through these tours. Thank you, Nigel. We hope to see you all at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall on 24 th October when there will be an illustrated talk by Sue and Amy Page about their visit to SANGAM, the Girl Guiding House in India. They have spoken to us before about their travels with the Girl Guides so we know that we can guarantee a fascinating evening. Our Snack & Chat Lunch in October will be on Monday 17 th October at The Palace Hotel. The time is 12.30pm. Thank you. Audrey Smith The Corporate Communion will be held at the Parish Church on Wednesday 5 th October at 10.00am. Sue O Brien King James Bible Reading Sunday 16 th to Sunday 23 rd October Bookings are coming in from churches in Paignton and from our own Parish. Several people have expressed a wish to read but would like the support of one or two others for an hours slot. So please join up and make small teams and you will be welcome on as many days as you wish. The catering team is already well organised and we hope for a really good celebration of this 400 th Anniversary. Sadie Yates Co-ordinator An invitation for everyone to come along to the new Gateway Service at 11.15am on October 2 nd and then every month on the first Sunday of each month (except January which will be on the 8 th /Second Sunday). There will be no Eucharist at this service. Each month there will be a different theme to the service. 3 4

Price to be arranged. Widecombe Fair A lovely morning and we were off in good time, the weather turned rough and rainy as we went along and so we moaned a bit but we were in such good spirits we tried not to let it bother us too much. By the time we arrived it wasn t too bad, the coaches park right in the village, not much walking, by the time we had looked around a little the rain stopped and even the sun came out. They used to charge for going down to the show ring but this year no charge so we were able to watch everything in the ring including the dog and ferret racing, I wished I had my Jack Russell, I have never seen so many in one place at a time. There were lovely stalls where you could buy many things, from a handbag to scrumpy. On the way home we stopped for a cup of tea at China Blue at Totnes which is always a good stop. Well we certainly did well for the weather after all, another good trip, we all had a good day, coming home exhausted as usual. Thanks Cyn Did you know that Paignton Parish Church has a Skittle Team? Well we do, and have entered a team in the Torbay Skittles League for a number of years now. It gives us the opportunity to reach out into the community, to show that we are not strange folk who just meet and worship at that ancient building in Church Street, but that we can share in the fun and fellowship of the local hostelries and sports clubs of Torbay. In recent years fun and fellowship has been the operative phase, but the new 2011/ 12 season has just started and although sadly at the end of last season we said goodbye to a couple of the founder members we have regrouped with some new members and the team got off to a marvellous start. After being 14 points adrift after the first round we knuckled down and after a couple of team huddles we went on to win by 38 points. Is this the start of something big? It is early days but the atmosphere among the players and supporters is certainly growing. If you would like to join the team or come and support us, please see Anne Palmer our captain for more information. Parish Harvest Service and Supper This will be held on Saturday 8 th October. The service will begin at 6.00pm at St Andrew s Church followed by a Harvest Supper in the newly refurbished St Andrew s Hall. There will be no charge for the Harvest Supper but we will need to know how many to cater for. If you would like to come to the Supper please ask your Churchwardens for a ticket. Susie K 5 6

6 Bell Ringers News An invitation to a party!!! On Monday October 31 st we are holding a Light Party! This party is an alternative to halloween, full of fun activities to do and sweets to eat! We will be theming all the activities on light and colour. The time for this party is 5pm -6.30pm. Who is it for? For families with children aged from 4 upwards. The parents/ grandparents are expected to stay with the children and join in the fun! After this will be a separate party for young people aged 11-18, those from JC s Gang-stars and other young people invited to attend by you! If you are interested in coming to participate or help out, or know people who you could invite along and want to know more details then please contact: Moira Devonport on Let s keep making a difference in the community by offering God s alternative to people! The tower captain, John Kelly, celebrated his 76 th birthday on 18 September. John has rung regularly at Paignton Parish Church for 59 years and has been captain of the ringers for the last 53 years. His birthday this year was celebrated a day early with ringing at Totnes, Ashburton, Lustleigh and at Moretonhamp-stead where John was taught to ring. This memorable day finished with a meal at the Union Inn, Moretonhampstead. More people have been taught to ring a bell over the past year and for anyone wishing to consider taking up this ancient art there is now time between 7.00pm and 7.30pm on Tuesdays when you can have quality time with our trainer. We also have access to a DVD on how to ring and given notice this can be shown to anyone who may be interested. Learning to ring does take a little longer than expected. You are not able to practise at home and in the ringing chamber, until you have control of the rope, you cannot join in with the rest of the ringers. This is one reason why at Paignton the learners have their own time. Once you have mastered the control of the rope, the next skill is listening to the striking of the clapper against the bell. Ringing is a public performance and at Paignton we owe it to our craft to aim for the highest standard. Few people are born with the natural ability to hear or strike accurately and we hope that this can be developed by all of our ringers. If you want to give ringing a go, no matter whether you are 9 or 90, please contact John Kelly, or come along one Tuesday or Sunday when we are ringing to see what actually happens. Bell ringing takes place every Tuesday night from 7.30 to 9pm and on Sundays generally from 8.50 until 9.30am. For further information please phone the Captain, John Kelly. Michael Webster 7 8

7 We would like to send our thanks to all our friends in Paignton who have sent messages and cards since Peter s problem was diagnosed. Surgery has taken place and it will be a few weeks to completion before a prosthesis is fitted. We both feel so nurtured and upheld by your prayers, thank you so much. With our love and good wishes, Peter and Gillian Mackenzie Parish Barbecue On behalf of the 70+ from our three churches who accepted the kind invitation to a barbecue in the Vicarage garden, we would like to thank Fr Roger and Gayna for the wonderful evening they gave us. There was seemingly endless food from hot sausages to cold salmon, baked potatoes and every kind of salad, plus an excellent choice of liquid refreshment!! And then, coaxed in by the promise of puddings, we were able to enter the Vicarage at last and view the new decoration and comfortable furnishings. Thank you both so much for your very kind hospitality and we wish you every happiness in your new home.
