3 Dinner at Gill & John s Gill & John s 10 challenge We intend to hold two Lunch Days at our home Cefn Uchaf, Nantyr on Saturday 18 th and Wednesday 22 nd August at 12:30. There will be two courses with coffee/tea, costing 7:50 per person. Friends welcome We can seat 10 each time. Please give your names with choice of day to Gill/John as soon as you can! Holiday Bible Club Mega Splash To all volunteers the dates 15 th, 16 th & 17 th August and plans are coming together the same club Mega Splash, which is based on the book of Jonah, as run in Wrexham very successfully last week. Make sure that Amanda has your name if you are able to help in any way. The following items for craft will be needed: Plastic Milk Bottles Kitchen Roll Middles Boxes of all sizes Paper Plates Tissue paper Craft materials Please bring to church, or leave at the Memorial Hall. Let s put the the planning meeting on Wednesday 8 th August in our diaries. Let s pray for the Bible Club as the plans are made.

4 Amanda s Recipe Book For our 10 challenge, we would like to make a Recipe Book of the Church s favourite sweet recipes. Therefore, if you have a favourite cake, dessert or preserve recipe that you would be willing to have included in the Recipe Book, we would be grateful if you could give it to us during the next few weeks. Thank You. Peter & Amanda Canal Trip A big thank you to Jeanette for organising the wonderful canal trip yesterday. The editor s jottings! Our next coffee morning on Tuesday. Our support and help will be appreciated. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the many summer visitors to our town as well as a money raising opportunity. Some fresh items for sale will be appreciated. On 4 August 1918 King George V called a National Day of Prayer. One hundred days later the war ended. 6 Today s Bible Study (from the Methodist Church Website) Readings John 6:24-35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me shall never be thirsty. (v. 35) Psalm 78 Background What is it that is drawing the crowds to follow Jesus to Capernaum? Jesus has just performed a powerful miracle with thousands of people present. He had taken five barley loaves and two fishes, given thanks to God for them and then fed a great crowd until their hunger was satisfied and the people were amazed (John 6:1-14). The question is what is it that amazed them? What did they see? Did they see a miracle worker who had the power to take a small quantity of food and feed a great crowd? Are they following Jesus in the mistaken belief that they will never have to look for food again? Or did they see the bread and fishes as a sign pointing to the mind and the heart to the true gift of God to God s own people? This gift which is much bigger than a free meal because it is the gift of Jesus himself? Jesus is showing them that the miracles are pointing towards who he really is and to what he is inviting them to share. I am the bread of life, he says, Do you want it or not? Strangely, they don t seem to know the answer. They know they do not want to go hungry again, but they do not know if they want to commit to following Jesus. The bread Jesus is offering them is spiritual food which will satisfy their deepest hunger for God. Jesus is inviting them into a new relationship with God. At this point many of the crowd walk away and they choose to go hungry. To Ponder Imagine you were in the crowd who went on to Capernaum. What are you seeing and hearing? 7 Some of the religious programmes on TV & Radio this week BBC1 12:25 Sunday 5 th August Songs of Praise Amazing Faith Sean Fletcher is in Alton in Staffordshire, not at its famous theme park Alton Towers but at its castle, now a Catholic youth retreat centre which raises self-esteem, and builds and strengthens friendships. He meets the young Christians running it who help ensure the youngsters leave with some treasured memories. The programme looks back at two stories of amazing faith featured over the last year, including the fantastic freestyle footballer from Milton Keynes and the Christian astronaut who walked on the moon but found more fulfilment when he gave his life to God. 8 How To Overcome Fear I praise You, for I am wonderfully. made. Psalm 139:14 NKJV THE STORY S told of a man who had a morbid fear of thunder, so he went to see a psychiatrist. You have a condition called brontophobia, the doctor said. It s silly to be afraid of thunder at your age. Just think of it as a drum roll in the symphony of life. What if that doesn t work? the man asked. The psychiatrist replied, Then do what I do. When you hear thunder, stuff cotton wool in your ears, crawl under the bed, and sing Mary Had a Little Lamb at the top of your lungs until the thunder stops. Seriously, most fears are based on feelings, not facts. Try to look beyond your fears and uncover the expectations that lie beneath them. For example, if you were raised in poverty you may be afraid to be generous. If you were abandoned you may be afraid to trust anyone, or you may cling to people and try to control them. If you were abused you may fear emotional and physical intimacy. If you were constantly criticised you may be afraid that Word for Today God won t forgive you. If you don t feel beautiful or intelligent, or you re not from a high-class family, you may be afraid to mix with people or talk to them in case they look down on you. American humourist James Thurber wrote, All men should strive to learn before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why. David not only pinpointed the source of his fears, but the source of his self- worth and security: I praise You, for I am wonderfully made; marvellous are Your works.
