Dear Friends, The month of June is an important one in the life of our parish for it contains so much, and, not least, the patronal festivals of two of our churches. St Boniface starts off on the 5 th when we give thanks for his birth in Crediton in 680, and who, after becoming a monk in Exeter was equipped for his future calling to take the Gospel to the heathen tribes of Germany, where he was eventually martyred. What a wonderful dedication for a missionary church. On June 24 th, the Parish Church commemorates the birth of John the Baptist. Earlier, on the 1 st, we d remembered the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth who was six months pregnant, and the son to be born would become the forerunner and herald of our Lord Jesus. But, like Boniface, he too would be martyred, for rebuking Herod Antipas for marrying his half brother s wife. The word linking these two saints is probably mission one of them to those who did not know God, and one to those who did know him but found temptation more attractive. So these two saints give us quite a lot to think about as we look at the way forward for our own personal mission among those we encounter day by day. Dedication means working towards an ideal, to devote one s time and energy to a special purpose, and both these saints can give us pause for thought. So, what are our ideals, what would we like to see happen? Are we being called to make that a reality? Another dedicated man was Barnabas, whose day is on the 11 th. He was a Cypriot Jew, and we think of him as being Paul s travelling companion. He was still at work when Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians and we give thanks for a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. Finally June 29 th when we remember Peter, the Apostle to the Jews, and Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles. Peter was the rock on which our Lord founded the Church, and Paul the great missionary, who was tireless in spreading the Gospel. What a month, and may it be a good month for us as we take our own ministry seriously, and live it joyfully for our Lord. Sadie

Why read the Bible? Before I came into a living relationship with Jesus, the Bible didn t mean much to me. Oh, I understood its basic teaching, in my head. I d been brought up with it and it had been explained very well and carefully. But somehow, it didn t touch me. Then I discovered that God wanted to have a proper relationship with me, one where we could talk, Father to child, friend to friend. All I needed to do was to offer my life to Jesus. When I had taken this momentous step, the Bible sprang to life for me, as if he was speaking to me himself. The first book I read afterwards was the book of Joshua. Not the normal thing for a new Christian, perhaps but the messages about be strong and very courageous, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go were very relevant indeed. The words of the Bible spoke to my heart and my attitudes in a new way. It was exciting, opening my Bible I never knew what God would point out to me. So the Bible is not just for information. It is for transformation. As we read it, think about it, pray on it and ask for God s help to put it into practice, little by little it starts to change us, our outlook and our attitudes. If we doubt this, we need look no further than Jesus. When he was being strongly tempted by the devil in the desert, how did he fight back? - with words from the Old Testament. In fact if you study carefully what Jesus says at that time, you can see how very deeply he has penetrated the meaning of the Jewish law, part of our Old Testament. And that s a lesson to us. When we re struggling with something, do we know our Bibles so well that its words come to our aid and strengthen us? Because that s one of the things it s there for. Another way it helps us is to answer the question How do we know what God is like? Has he left us to guess, or make it up, or copy other religions and add a dash of whatever we wish? There are a lot of people who do that, but it s not possible to reach the truth about God that way. No, we have a God who has revealed himself. He teaches us about himself through the pages of the Bible. Little by little, as we read and ponder and learn, we discover who he is, what he is like, what his plan is for his creation. We are amazed at his endless, patient love for us, his profound understanding of our

nature and our need, and his willingness to die for love of us, that we might live with him. This is life-transforming stuff. It s just too difficult to understand, I hear you say. Well, there s a good way of dealing with that. These days there are loads of excellent little books to help you understand what you are reading. Scripture Union and the Bible Reading Fellowship are just two organisations which produce short readings for each day. They add some explanation, make it clear and help us apply it to our everyday lives. With so many Bible resources, there s every reason for us all to be reading our Bibles and learning about God every day of our lives. It will bless us, guide us, enrich us, strengthen and encourage us, challenge us and help us to grow in spirit and in truth. So what are you waiting for? To help you, here are some resources: Scripture Union produces Daily Bread, Encounter with God, Closer to God and many other helps in Bible study id The Bible Reading Fellowship produces The New Daylight, Day by Day with God, Guidelines and The Upper Room. CWR also produces a very popular booklet called Every Day with Jesus. You can obtain these on line, or in a Christian Bookshop (there s one in Newton Abbott and another in Teignmouth), or you can order them over the phone. Gill Oh yes, I am a Christian! I wasn t brought up to learn about the teachings of Christ, I didn t go to church on Sundays, in fact the only time I went to church was for a wedding or baptism. My teaching came from school assemblies and a bible I was given as a child but throughout my childhood and well into adulthood I d always known that God was there because time and time again I would hear him telling me that I needed to find a church to attend.

It wasn t until 2000 when Michael and I moved down from London and a very close friend of ours passed away that I heard that voice again saying: It s the right time Karen, you need help in dealing with this. The question now was which church? I had no idea and thought the logical thing to do was try a different church each week until I found the right one, where I could be part of that church family. I m not quite sure how long that would have taken! You have to understand that going to church was a huge thing for me as no one in my family attended or even had faith that God existed. It turned out that I needn t have worried as God was way ahead of me and had already laid the path laid out for me which I will now share. Michael and I were walking through the churchyard where I found a pound coin. Having picked it up and put it in my pocket I started thinking I should do something with it, and that turned out to be a lottery ticket which in turn won As I had found the original coin in the churchyard I decided that the had to go to the church. About a week later I walked into our wonderful building and there I met Jim Morley, Chairman of the Friends of Paignton Parish at the time. We started chatting and I told him the story of why I was there and he asked if I was a regular churchgoer. He then proceeded to tell me about the 9.30 and 11 o clock services held on Sundays and suggested that I might like to try the 11 o clock as that was for the younger generation (I was in my 40s at the time, how kind). It wasn t until a couple of weeks later that I plucked up the courage to attend that service, and that as they say is history. God certainly does work in mysterious ways and today I have that church family and I am so thankful that God found a way of getting me through those doors. Am I a Christian? Absolutely without a shadow of a doubt! Karen Morris

Dare to be a Daniel For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6: 12) How quick we can too often be in trying to solve our own problems! I may be speaking only for myself, but both long and short term problems are issues that very often cause me to cry out to God only when I have exhausted my own resources. Yet right here in the book of Ephesians is the reason and explanation as to why that should be our first resort - we do not have the capability of ourselves to fight some of the many difficulties that come into our lives. One of the Bible's most righteous men - Daniel - knew this better than most and it's quite wonderful how Old and New Testament tie together to demonstrate the truth of scripture. For in Daniel 10 we find the great man in distress with verse 2 telling us: "At that time I Daniel mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food, no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over. Daniel had a problem - we are not made aware of its nature - but what follows is a demonstration to all of us as to what can happen if we are determined to let God deal with it. For it continues that on the 24th day he finally received a visit from the heavenly realms and it is made clear that a battle had been on to get to him - just as describe the Ephesians scripture above. It says that he was visited by a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6 his body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude." Daniel alone had the vision and the voice said: Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your

God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13 But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come. Michael is of course interpreted as being the Archangel Michael, and that he should be required to help fight his way through the satanic forces to get a message to Daniel shows the opposition existing in heavenly realms. We are an impatient people and expect immediate answers to prayer. Daniel knew better and was persistent just as we have to be. We need to remember there's a battle going on above us and realise what we are involved in as Christians. Never give up - keep going - be determined. And remember those words of Daniel's vision: "Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them." He'll do the same for us! Let's remember the words of a verse from a verse of the great old hymn Dare to be a Daniel Hold the Gospel banner high! On to vict ry grand! Satan and his hosts defy, And shout for Daniel s band. Hugh

Change an all-purpose word Change is a word that we react to differently through our life. When I think of my childhood, something new was exciting, new toys, visiting new places, making friends. Later on in life there were different changes; some wonderful, some not immediately appreciated. Here we are in Spring, the time for thoughts of love, but also a time when a wife thinks of spring cleaning and the husband shudders with thoughts of paint and wallpaper. The Do Not Disturb sign is now not so romantic, and excitement is in short supply! Cheer up, it will be a better outlook. As time rolls on there will be times when you can reflect on the changes that are happening around you. Modern technology now makes us aware of the plight of many people, of tragic events around the world, who are in need of help. We seem less quickly informed about people in Great Britain, Torbay, Paignton or in the street where we live; who also need our help. Now, while you are sitting in your chair out in the garden, have a quiet look around. See the snail crawling across the patio looking for its next meal. If a shadow or movement is felt, it gets back inside its shell until it feels safe Turn your head and see in a quiet corner there is a sign of movement, and gradually a tiny bundle is unfolding. You watch as the wings of a butterfly, slowly but surely, spread out wide. It remains still until a gently breeze and the warm sun dries its wings. You may wonder how it all could have fitted into the small chrysalis. Then suddenly it flies away to show to everyone the beauty of what was once an unloved caterpillar, but has now changed into a wonderful butterfly. Change has always been happening; are we prepared to change our ways for the benefit of others? Would you prefer to be a snail that hides in its shell and never changes; do you want to remain like a caterpillar, or be like the butterfly? Be like God meant you to be, and spread your wings. Ron

Keep in touch with the Good News Traditionally the church at large is not great at communication. Many feel awkward when communicating their faith, and often internal communication is not as good as it could be. That's why it's important to keep abreast with all the methods readily available to us to ensure the world knows Jesus is alive, God is on his throne, and that the church is as relevant today as it always has been and that amid all the worldwide gloom and doom - there is HOPE! And the beauty is that via the social networks we are able to update on a day to day basis both at local church level and nationally. Take as an example Facebook, which many believe is really not something with which good Christians should be involved, given some of the often hugely negative posting that it carries. In fact I know personally of two people who have come to faith in Jesus as a result of the social network. Amid much darkness and gloom they found hope and the love of Christ. It's the reason why we have a growing Facebook presence as a church which you can find at under the name Parish of Paignton Churches. It allows us to regularly update everybody on church events whilst encouraging others into the love of our Saviour on a daily basis. It's good that the Anglican church at large now is sending out regular podcasts and daily news. Any that is considered of immediate importance you will also find on our page. If you have not already become a member of our group then please sign up.

The Running Pensioner A reflection on Paignton's Haven project When Jesus told the story of the prodigal son, he tells us that the Father saw the returning son when he was still a long way off, and that he ran to meet him. We understand that the reason he saw him so quickly is that he was looking for him every day, every hour. Although this son had rejected his family, left them struggling because he had taken half their money, and brought them shame in their local community, the Father was still longing to see him and to welcome him back. But why did he run to meet him? I recently read a comment from someone who knows that part of the world well. The Father was running because the neighbours knew how badly the son had behaved. If they had got there first they would have driven him off with sticks and violence. He was an outcast. They did not want him back. However, the Father ran, because he still loved him, and in spite of what everyone thought, he longed to welcome him home. This is one of those passages which makes me realise the importance of The Haven homeless project. Most of those who come into the Haven have got in a mess broken relationships, dependencies, sickness, failure to find work. There is a lot of harsh judgmental comment these days about hard working people with the implication that if you are not in a job, it is a kind of moral weakness. The Haven rejects that thinking and welcomes each one, as God the Father does for us. The Haven offers comfort, respect, and a space to begin again, to put their lives together, to rebuild relationships and regain some hope and confidence. And sometimes to find a Father s love and forgiveness. Geoff For more information on The Haven look for their newsletter at the back of the church or go to:

Watoto Choir wows St John's Watoto, Wow-Toto from Kampala to Paignton the voices and beats of the Watoto choir have set the world on fire. Saturday May 16, 2015 saw the choir bring their vibrant concert to St John's and what an evening it was: colour, rhythm, amazing song and dance and beaming smiles all round! The choir is composed of 18 children aged from 7-13 year olds. They are four months and six days in to their tour of Europe and the UK and will return to Uganda in July. All of the children are orphans, but are now a part of the Watoto family! The concert raised over 1000 in support of those living with the effects of HIV and aids. It certainly was an enjoyable concert with a clear message that the audiences generosity is indeed changing these children's lives. A big thank you to all who helped. Jill Davies

Parish Ladies Group In April, Ali Marshall, the head gardener at Torre Abbey, educated us on the subject of medieval gardens with particular reference to those at Torre Abbey which we shall visit on the afternoon of July 27 th. We are fortunate to have such an historical site on our doorstep. On Monday, June 1 st, we have planned a visit to Dartington Hall and gardens at 2.30pm. Please come. Even if you have been there before, there is always something new to see. We are responsible for our own transport. If you still need a lift please let us know as soon as possible. If you have a Blue Badge please bring it with you. On Tuesday, June 23 rd, we shall visit the Palace Theatre, Paignton at 7.30pm for a performance of The Hollow by Agatha Christie. Please remember the Group s stall at the Summer Fayre on Saturday, July 18 th, and let us have your gifts. The more we have the more we sell, and, consequently, the more money we make for our church. If you would be willing to spend some time selling on the stall, please let us know. It is a rewarding experience. Our Snack & Chat Lunch on June 15 th at 12.30pm will be at the Redcliffe Hotel. Thank you. Audrey Smith Muslims turn to Christ Thousands of Muslims in Algeria are requesting Bibles and becoming Christians, disillusioned with the so-called Arab Spring and the rise of violent Islam, the country s sole Bible distributor said. Ali Khidri, Executive Secretary for the Bible Society in Algeria, explained that hundreds of people every month were turning up at his office in Algiers requesting a Bible, and that thousands were going to churches to enquire about the Christian faith.

Mr Khidri said Muslims were questioning their faith because they were disillusioned by acts being carried out in the name of Islam. He added that some Christian converts were making television programmes to engage Algerians with the Bible, using their knowledge of the Qu ran. According to the Bible Society there are between 100,000 and 200,000 Christians in Algeria a huge increase from 2, years ago. More than 2,000 baptisms took place in 2013, the Bible Society says; there are 48 registered Protestant congregations, about 200 underground congregations that meet in people s homes, and a few dozen Catholic ones, though these are mainly attended by expatriates. Bell Ringers News May Day Outing The bell ringers outing this May Day took place with the ringers using their own vehicles, as hiring a coach is no longer viable. We rang at Plympton St Mary, Pillaton, St Mellion and Sampford Spiney. An advantage in using cars is that a coach would never have made it through the lanes of West Dartmoor to reach Sampford Spiney. We enjoyed ourselves ringing at these different churches, and the weather was kind with the rain holding off until we had finished ringing at the last tower. We enjoyed a meal at the Hunting Lodge, Ivybridge. Thank you to all the ringers who helped and supported this event. Ringing on Victory in Europe (VE) Day 8 May Ringing was nationwide and we were very pleased and honoured to be part of this by ringing to commemorate the 70 th anniversary of VE Day. Magna Carta, the Grand Ringing Day and LiberTeas As part of the Strike a Blow for Democracy week-end, on Sunday 14 June 2015, to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, there is to be ringing throughout the country. At 3pm, as part of a UK-wide event entitled LiberTeas, the whole nation will be encouraged to sit down to tea. This is also the designated time for ringing as part of the Grand Ringing Day. Parliament is asking communities across the UK to take a moment to celebrate, debate or reflect on our liberties. One way of doing this is to ring. Another is to hold a tea party and the word LiberTeas is thus created.

Battle of Waterloo The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in presentday Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. A French army under the command of Napoleon was defeated by the armies of the Seventh Coalition, comprising an Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington combined with a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard von Blücher. Celebration and commemoration in the UK took many forms and the ringing of church bells was the first and most common. Our ringers will mark the bicentenary of the battle by ringing church bells as many did in Michael Webster Welby: Persecution a common feature The most common feature of Anglicanism worldwide is being persecuted, the Archbishop of Canterbury said last night. But Christians also need to take measures against their own tendencies towards violence. Speaking at the Board of Deputies of British Jews President's Dinner, Justin Welby said that in the last two years he and his wife Caroline had travelled to all 37 provinces of the Anglican Communion. "The most common feature of Anglicanism is actually persecution, and that goes with poverty. Of our 37 provinces, roughly 24 are in areas of conflict or post-conflict." Over the last few weeks he received s from an archbishop pleading for support as his churches were shelled and the paths to them mined by violent Buddhist radicals. Two weeks before that he received pleas from south India, where Hindu violent radicalism had burned more than 200 churches. "And then we need hardly say about what has been happening with ISIS and Boko Haram; in Libya; to the Copts, the Egyptian Orthodox; in northern Nigeria, and right across the region of the Levant and Mesopotamia." He said the response must be global, must reach across generations and must be ideological.

"Within the Christian community we need to stand against our own tendency, well exhibited over many centuries, to violence: violence against each other and above all violence against Jewish communities, in horrendous and horrible ways going back well over a millennium." At a time once more of rising anti-semitism, he said the church must "stand against" anything that imperils Jewish communities. "It has been a very shocking 12 months, with ISIS, the Paris attacks, Boko Haram, Kenya and many, many other forms of very severe religious violence aimed at Jewish communities in Europe and around the world and at other religious communities, including very serious attacks on Christian communities and Anglican communities." He apologised for a tweet sent by pro-palestinian vicar Rev Stephen Sizer, who was subsequently banned from social media by the church. Archbishop Welby described Sizer's language in the tweet as "atrocious". He said: "And that's why I want to say, in this speech, how sorry I am that that happened, to apologise for that. We did seek to deal with it quickly and effectively, and I hope and pray that we have done so." He admitted that the church in all its diversity will continue to fall down on this from time to time. "But I do want to make a commitment that we will take anti-semitism seriously within the church." "The reality is that we do not, as faith groups in our society, always exhibit that secure tolerance to each other that enables us to speak powerfully of secure tolerance to the world around us. Christians are as bad at anyone at this in fact, if I dare to be competitive, I think we're worse." To my friends at St Andrews It is time to step down as your deputy church warden. I would like to thank you all for your support over the years, and although I don't like to single people out I must thank Edwina for teaching me all I know, and to Jill for taking on much of the work as I still have a full time job. Once again thank you all. Paul

Friends of Paignton Parish Church AGM This is a reminder of the date of our Annual General Meeting on Thursday June 18 th 7pm. As usual the business part of the meeting will be over in about 15 minutes. Afterwards we will be having our usual Cheese and Wine refreshments. This year we are also having a not too serious quiz about the church itself, where people can search for the clues and mix with one another. We promise a convivial and social evening. Pat Kerswell Life is but a Weaving (the Tapestry Poem) by Corrie Ten Boom My life is but a weaving Between my God and me. I cannot choose the colors He weaveth steadily. Oft times He weaveth sorrow; And I in foolish pride Forget He sees the upper And I the underside. Not til the loom is silent And the shuttles cease to fly Will God unroll the canvas And reveal the reason why. The dark threads are as needful In the weaver s skilful hand As the threads of gold and silver In the pattern He has planned. He knows, He loves, He cares; Nothing this truth can dim. He gives the very best to those Who leave the choice to Him.

Prayer of the month O Lord Jesus Christ, light shining in our darkness have mercy on our tired and doubting hearts. Renew in us the courage we need to bring to a completion the work your calling has begun in us. Amen. ( A prayer of the Taize community) Mothers Union News The Mothers Union are delighted to see so many Baptisms in the Parish. We have undertaken to send the Baptised children anniversary cards for the first, second, third, fourth and fifth anniversaries of their Baptism. Up to now, it is babies and young children who have been Baptised and the cards are attractive child friendly designs bought from the Mothers Union catalogue. In the case of an adult, I think we will have to design our own. We hope that the little children be brought to church and, when they are old enough, will enjoy Sunday School and Messy Church. The members of the Branch who recently enjoyed the trip to Liverpool with other Parishioners tell me that, in spite of, carrying the bag with the large MU logo, they did not meet up with any other members either in the hotel or in the two Liverpool Cathedrals they visited. As the logo was mistakenly thought to stand for Manchester United last year, perhaps Liverpool football supporters did not think fit to comment. The next Corporate Communion will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday 3 rd June, and as usual, anyone will be welcome to attend the service. Paula Christian Branch Secretary
