3 From Pastor Dawn s Desk... 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. ~Ephesians 4:4-6 We like to talk in the church about this thing called unity as a way of living together with one another as God s people even people who are different from us. We talk about being united in Christ all the time, but we often forget that there is a difference between living in unity and expecting others to live and act and believe the same way we do. When Paul wrote to people in Ephesus about unity in the Body of Christ, he emphasized oneness that is defined by several things including sharing one Lord, one faith, one baptism and one God who is above all and through all and in all. These things are foundational to who we are as the church. Beyond that, there are many ways that we are different. We bring our own unique gifts that we share with others. In a recent online article that I read, author David Housholder shares some words about the recent closing of two mega churches with Lutheran roots. Mega churches is a phrase coined in the last several decades to describe what I call really big churches that often see thousands of people come through the door every week for worship and other ministries. Some of these churches have thrived. A few have struggled. I won t go into the details about the churches whose doors recently closed, but I will share with you an insight that Housholder had about another church that I am familiar with that is thriving. In the suburb of Lakeville, MN sits Hosanna! Church. I served at a neighboring congregation for over seven years and would agree that one thing they do well there is this thing called, unity. While I must admit that there were times when it was hard for me to serve in the shadow of Hosanna!, I have since learned that God can and does do amazing work in congregations of all sizes and shapes. David Housholder interviewed Ryan Alexander, Hosanna s current Senior Pastor. They talked about how former Senior Pastor, Bill Bohline was good at finding ways of adding new DNA with new people and new outside experiences (Promise Keepers, Alpha, etc) but always to change the body together and organically as a one-bowl melting pot. No separate style services. No menu. We eat together. He was all about soup (with lots of ingredients, some of them new) in one pot. Not a salad bar. So, you re probably asking by now, Pastor Dawn, what does this have to with our little old church here in Murray County, MN? I believe it has plenty to do with us because regardless of how big or little our churches are, we all share this one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. We have been called and gathered by The Holy Spirit to serve and love one another, regardless of our sizes or our differences. We do bring our own gifts to this table we call church. The challenge is to dare to create our own unique recipe for a soup with these gifts that is nourishing for our souls and satisfies the appetites of all those who hunger for the hope we share in Jesus Christ. You may have some of your own ideas about how we should do church or how we should start some kind of ministry or program, but it is essential that as we share our gifts, we stay focused on Jesus Christ and connected to each other as a community. In other words, we all bring something to this one big pot of soup instead of trying to build a bigger, better salad bar. See you in church! Pastor Dawn 5

As the Health Ministry Team has been focusing on emotional health and mental illness this year, we have often brought up the topic of the stigma surrounding these topics. Why is it so much harder to talk about a mental illness than it is about a physical illness like diabetes, or pneumonia? The answer usually is the stigma that comes with mental illness. Stigma. It comes from Latin and Greek, meaning a distinguishing mark of social disgrace like a brand or a tattoo or a stain. Today it more accurately means something that takes away from ones character or reputation a shame, disgrace, or dishonor what people are afraid of. The stigma that comes with mental illness very much becomes a barrier that prevents or discourages individuals (and their families) from seeking help. In fact, 2/3 of people with a known mental illness never seek help from a professional often due to stigma. They are afraid people will find out, or they won t be hired for a job, or they are just embarrassed. It deprives people of dignity and support when it is most needed. Mental illness can be treated as can physical illness, and people can recover. They also need people to be supportive and encouraging. It s important to see the PERSON, not the ILLNESS. That s something we each can do Quilting Monday, April 25 and Tuesday, April 26 at 1:00 pm Mental health matters to everyone. Approximately 1 out of 4 people will experience a mental health issue at some time in their life. Let s keep talking and learning about our own mental and emotional health. Maybe through learning we can get rid of some of the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Watch for a learning event coming on June 16. WCLC books for all women are on the table in the narthex. Please stop and pick up your program book for Ruth Hoyme for the Health Ministry Team 16 17
