Christ Lutheran News March, 2017 Footprints in the Sand One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonging to him and the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it. LORD you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me. The LORD replied, my precious, precious child, I Love you and I would never leave you! During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Ted s Desk... As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you. See, now is the acceptable time. Now is the day of salvation! ~ II Corinthians 6:1-2 This passage is from one of the lessons for Ash Wednesday, which this year will be March 1 st. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent. Any day, of course, can be a day of salvation a day when we are particularly aware of what God has done for us through Christ to give us hope for the future. While any day is good for this, Lent is a special time of the year set aside to particularly emphasize spiritual reflection and renewal. Throughout the season we have extra worship services on Wednesday evenings which this year will be on the theme of Foundations of Faith (see more information later in this newsletter). This year we will also be making available to you for your devotional purposes and learning an on-line video resource called He Chose the Nails by popular Christian author Max Lucado (again, see more information elsewhere in this newsletter). I invite you to use this as an acceptable time for growing deeper in the Christian faith, dedicating yourself to faith practices such as Bible reading, daily devotions, prayer, and loving service to others. ~Pastor Ted As I mentioned, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday a day of repentance. It is a time that we especially remember our human limitations our sinfulness and our mortality and how much we are in need of God s grace. For centuries ashes have been a sign of repentance and humility, so we come forward to have our foreheads marked with an ashen smudge in the shape of the cross. The season ends with Holy Week remembering the events leading up to Jesus death on the cross for our sins, and his resurrection victory over death on Easter. With words and actions we remember Jesus triumphant entry into the city of Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, his Last Supper with his disciples which was followed by his betrayal and arrest (Maundy Thursday), his death on the cross (Good Friday), and then his resurrection (Easter Sunday). 4 5

Financial Information Giving Options... Feb On this page you will find a brief overview of the month s offerings. It is our goal to provide you with actual, updated information about Christ Lutheran s financial status. Following our annual meeting, the congregation voted on the 2017 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $21, each month to cover our anticipated ministry expenses. In addition we will need $1, each month to meet our Synod Mission Support goal. ~Ronda Radke, Treasurer & Dawn Mouw, Office Manager Here s a look at where we ended January: Beginning Balance: $ 4, Receipts: $ 28, Expenses: $ 23, Ending Balance: $ 8, The gray bar shows our actual offerings through February 24. The black bar is our budgeted offering total. General Offerings: January, February 2017 Many of us have discovered how helpful automatic electronic payments can be for those really important commitments we don t want to forget the mortgage, insurance, utilities, etc. Our gifts to the Church are also really important matters which could be budgeted and scheduled in this way. Our donations are a response to God s blessings, and fund the ministry of the Church in our congregation and throughout the world. Automatic electronic giving assures that our support of the church continues even when we are vacationing, home sick, or snow-bound. Online Giving Recognizing that some of us prefer to use our credit card for most transactions, the Stewardship Committee is encouraging you to use your smartphone to scan this QR code which will take you directly to the church website christinslayton.weebly.com You will be able to quickly add your personal information on this secure site. Automatic Giving Another option for automatic giving is to withdraw your donation directly from either your checking or savings account. You can choose to have your donation taken out either on the 15th, or on the last day of the month, or at both times. Forms are available on the shelf in the narthex or on our website. Once you have completed the form, please return it to the church office. Jan $5,000 $10,000 $15,000 $20,000 $25,000 $30,000 Jan Feb Actual $25, $9, Budget $21, $21, IRA Distributions If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can make "qualified charitable distributions" to the church and not include the IRA distribution as part of your taxable income. This can help people make direct gifts to ministry and save taxes! Could this help you? For more details talk to your tax person, or call Amy Bigot, Regional Gift Planner with the ELCA at or at amy.bigot@elca.org There is no charge for her service. 6 7

8 WHERE YOUR CHURCHWIDE OFFERING GOES As members of the ELCA, our faith in a loving, caring God frees us to be bold and courageous, open to the Holy Spirit s invitation to be active in the world. These dollars are put to work on your behalf in the following ways: 32.8% Coordination and support of ministries Coordinating relationships and activities between synods and churchwide ministries Providing communication and technological support to ministries across the church Supporting mission through research of attitudes, practices and trends Planning and evaluating the work of the ELCA locally, nationally and globally Providing administrative and organizational services for God s work, including maintaining the list of more than 15,000 rostered leaders 31.3% Supporting congregations And evangelical outreach Proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ in communities across the country Starting dozens of new congregations and Synodically Authorized Worshiping Communities annually Renewing more than a hundred existing congregations, ministries, organizations, institutions and agencies each year Nurturing faith communities through word and sacrament to witness God s grace Recognizing and promoting the gift of diversity 17.6% Bringing forth AND SUPPORTING leaders Expanding youth and young adult ministries Preparing, recruiting and supporting church leaders Supporting educational and teaching networks Encouraging the ministry of the baptized in the church and world Supporting retired church leaders 6.7% Global and ecumenical RELATIONSHIPS Accompanying churches around the world, including sending over 200 missionaries Assisting global companions in building their capacity for mission and ministry in over 90 countries Developing and nurturing inter-lutheran and full communion relationships Relating to other communities of faith 5.6% Stewardship and mission funding Thanking, informing, teaching, inspiring and inviting people to be good stewards Interpreting the ELCA mission and budget Developing financial resources to fund God s work 3.9% Stepping forward as a church serving others Supporting the response to poverty, hunger, violence, disease and disasters Serving creation and humanity through study and deliberation on current issues Developing and supporting leaders who engage economic and social issues Serving in response to God s love through social ministry organizations 2.1% Governance Making decisions through governance procedures including the ELCA Church Council, ELCA Churchwide Assembly and Conference of Bishops In 2012, Mission Support dollars for the above purposes totaled nearly $50 million, not including over $30 million of funds designated for ELCA World Hunger, ELCA Disaster Response, the ELCA Malaria Campaign and other ministries. 6 Foundations Of Faith Lenten Theme Our Mid-Week Lenten services this year will focus on some of the Foundations of Faith. We will reviewing teachings and faith practices that are central to us as Christians and as Lutherans. These are the topics that Martin Luther covered in his Small Catechism The Ten Commandments, the Apostles Creed, the Lord s Prayer, and the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. We ll see the Biblical roots for these things, and touch on some of Luther s explanations. If it s been a while since you read the Small Catechism (or maybe you grew up in a different faith tradition and were never exposed to it), this would be a great chance to learn or review. We will have some print copies of the Small Catechism available, but if you have a smart phone, you can download the Small Catechism free. At the App Store, search for Luther s Small Catechism. Our worship services at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights will again use the beautiful Holden Evening Prayer service. Join us for worship on these themes: March 1 Ash Wednesday March 8 Ten Commandments March 15 Apostles Creed March 22 Lord s Prayer March 29 Holy Baptism April 5 Holy Communion Radio Broadcast Ministry Thank you to everyone who has supported our Radio Broadcast Ministry in Checks ($65) can be made out to Christ Lutheran with Radio Broadcast in the memo or you can pay online by visiting our website. April 9 and 16 are the next dates available. 10 Shetek Conference Assembly March 5 Our congregation will be hosting the other congregations of the Shetek Conference for the annual Conference Assembly at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 5. This is a great chance to mix with our faith neighbors, and learn more about the larger Church. You will hear about our partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa, our Synod s new initiative called Embrace God s Mission: Equip God s People, and take care of some business including electing Conference officers and representatives to Synod committees. We are able to have 6 official voting delegates and others can attend as observers. If you are willing to be a part of this, please speak to one of our pastors. Lenten Soup Suppers During the season of Lent, Christ Lutheran Youth will be serving soup on Wednesday evenings prior to Lenten worship beginning March 8 at 6:15 pm. All youth and their parents are asked to participate in these meals at least once during the season with serving, setting tables and cleaning up. If you have not yet been contacted about helping, please do so by contacting a member or the Youth Committee or the church office. Money raised beyond the cost of expenses will help support future youth activities and trips. Thank you. 11

Worried about fitting this into your already busy schedule? Don t. This study is the perfect blend of learning and understanding more of God s Word while allowing you to study at your own pace, within the amount of time you have. 11 20 Minnesota Food Share The month of March will again have a statewide campaign for support of local food shelves. Please consider bringing gifts for the Murray County Food Shelf when you come for worship this month. You can bring items for our Birthday Bag project (see page 16), non-perishable food or personal supplies, or cash donations. Food shelves can stretch cash further than donations of food because of their access to discount products and programs, so cash is particularly helpful. During an average month last year the Murray County Food Shelf helped 85 families, or 263 individuals. The need is here, even in our own country! Thank you for your generosity. We envision a Minnesota where all residents have access to healthy food and no one suffers from hunger. Congratulations, Mallory And Mason! We extend our congratulations to Mallory Loosbrock and Mason Whitehead who were both recognized with the AAA Award for Murray County Central. This award celebrates students who have excelled in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts. Both Mallory and Mason have also been very active members at Christ Lutheran, and have both taught Sunday School. Mason received further recognition, being named the male winner of the AAA Award for Region 3A! He is now a candidate for statewide recognition. Winners of the state awards will be announced March 25 th. Good luck, Mason! Coffee Hour For Benevolence The Love Circle will be serving Coffee Hour on March 5th. They have decided to designate the offerings that day towards our congregation s Mission Support pledge to the ministry of our Synod and the larger Church. Please be generous with your gifts!
