3 From Pastor Dawn s Desk... Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. ~ Colossians 4:5-6 NRSV I ve been giving the matter of effective communication a great deal of thought lately. Perhaps this is because there seems to be an increased amount of information that I want to communicate with others. It may also be that I ve been receiving more information from others. Some of this information involves asking and answering questions. Usually, though, I am finding myself seeking more effective or creative ways to communicate. One of the things I ve come to realize is that with all of the different means we now have for communicating, most of us are being bombarded with more information than our brains can handle. Just because you are able to receive the same message on the same day by , telephone, text message and Facebook doesn t mean you should. Most of the so-called experts will say that we need to communicate something 5-7 different ways in order for people to remember the message. While this might be true in certain cases, I m beginning to wonder if it is as true now as it once was. It seems to me that when a piece of information comes at us in too many different ways or too often, we begin to either ignore or forget what is being said. With all of the noise or chatter that we encounter with the internet, social media, television, radio and in print, we tend to lose track of what is being said and the message becomes lost. This seems to be especially true when we decide the message is too long. Take, for instance the following sentence: The Few, the Proud, the. Most of us know how to finish this sentence without giving it much thought. We know that this sentence ends with, The Marines because it is probably a part of our long-term memory. This is mainly because the whole message contains only six words. It s easy to remember and it doesn t take long to for us to say. In a world where many of us are on information overload it might be a good time for us to evaluate and maybe even simplify the ways we communicate. Consider all of the messages you receive from your church. If you or your family is involved in any kind of ministry, whether it s ushering or confirmation, you can probably find out about this in the church newsletter or bulletin. You might also find it on the church website or Facebook page. In addition, someone might send you an to remind you or you ll get a phone call. So far, this is six ways of communicating a message such as, Please remember to turn in your registration form and money for the retreat. Remarkably, even though it s been communicated at least six different ways, many people still have not received or remembered the message. Which leads me to wonder what exactly went wrong? While I m no communications expert, I do wonder if, in an effort to communicate effectively, we ve actually over communicated to the point where people have stopped paying attention. I honestly don t have a perfect answer to this communication dilemma. Other than simplifying the message, I m not sure if there is a perfect way to tell people what I want them to know and remember. This, I then realize, might actually be the problem some messages are just about what I want others to know and remember. They might not be messages others actually care to know or remember. This is where you can help. As your church seeks better and more effective ways for getting essential information out to you, please do what you can to also take ownership of this information. You may not think the message you receive is very important at the moment, but please do what you can to still retain this information for the future. Please also remember that the information you receive from church is part of our greater mission as a congregation to seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people. While it might seem like a small thing that you are scheduled to run power point on a Saturday evening in November or the church wants your help serving a Wednesday night meals, these things do matter for the sake of the Gospel and for sharing Christ s saving love with the world. 4 See you in church! ~Pastor Dawn 5

I m looking forward to another good year! ~Rebekah N Plan Ahead Christmas Schedule Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday this year. Even though we don t normally have a service on Christmas Day, we have decided that we will have our normal schedule on Sunday, December 25 th Christmas Day. It will be a different service than what we will be doing Christmas Eve, so you are invited to come both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, or whichever of our services works best with your family s schedule. Bring your Christmas company with you, and worship together as a family! Here is our schedule: Christmas Eve (Saturday, December 24) 4:00 PM Carol Service with Holy Communion at Faith, Avoca 5:15 PM Candlelight Carol Service with Holy Communion at Christ 9:00 PM Candlelight Carol Service with Holy Communion at Christ Christmas Morning (Sunday, December 25) 8:45 AM Lessons and Carols service at Faith, Avoca 10:15 AM Lessons and Carols service at Christ, Slayton Pew For Sale When the sound board was moved to the main level of the sanctuary, a pew had to be removed to make room for it. It has been sitting temporarily in the Chapel Lounge, but the Council has decided to make it available to anyone who would have use for it. It is a light-oak pew, about 13 foot, 5 inches long. Obviously it is too long for anyone s home as it is, but a good craftsman could cut it down to make at least one entry bench for one s home. If you have use for it, please call the church office to make an offer for it. 15
