Christ Lutheran News February, 2018 Thanking Jesus on Valentine's Day Author/Written By: Marilyn Ferguson 2010 I give my heart to Jesus This special time of year When others seem so distant My Lord is always near. When the world is lost in candy And sending cards around When everyone is busy My Lord can then be found. When I am feeling lonely My Lord is always there When I am feeling fragile He handles me with care. When others seem so loving And go the extra mile It only takes my Jesus To really make me smile. When people pass out chocolate And flowers signed with love I thank my Lord for sending His Son from up above. When all is lost in sweetness I hang my head to pray My Lord is extra precious This special heartfelt day. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Dawn s Desk... I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, Ephesians 4:1 NRSV Recently I was able to attend a continuing education event at Luther Seminary about the role of women in ministry. The event was led by Professor Karoline Lewis and was based on her book, SHE: Five Keys to Unlock the Power of Women in Ministry. It was honestly one of the most valuable and helpful continuing education events that I ve attended in my 12 ½ years of ordained ministry. If you d like to hear more about what I learned, please ask me. One of five keys we discussed related to leadership. In particular, leadership in the church looks different, depending on your identity as well as your location. The kind of leadership that works in a particular congregation in a particular place will likely not be as effective in another congregation. This seems like an obvious assumption, but it s remarkable to how often we try to make ourselves into something we are not. When we do this, we miss out on the ways in which God calls us in specific ways to specific places. Karoline shared during our time together something that Pastor Raquel Lettsome had recently said to her and a few other women. Raquel serves as an Associate Minister at Union A.M.E. Church in Warwick, NY. Karoline and Raquel were having dinner with two other well-known female preachers who were extremely impressed by Raquel and were urging her to join the preaching faculty at their respective seminaries. Now keep in mind that these seminaries are quite prestigious and it s not every day that someone asks you to consider teaching on the faculty in such places. But Raquel is good at this. In fact, I ve heard her preach and she is an amazing preacher. But, her response to their urgings to pursue something bigger and better than what she is currently doing was, I try to live out of my call and not my can. By this, she meant that she is committed to faithfully answering God s call in her life rather than simply pursuing other great opportunities just because she can or she is able. Her words are still echoing through me now. I probably will print them out and frame them and leave them sitting in the center of my desk. I can t tell you how important it is for me, as a woman in ministry and as a leader in the church to hang on to this truth. Just because I can do something, doesn t mean I will. By trying to do or be everything I am able or even desire to do in ministry, I am not being faithful to the ways that God has truly called me into ministry and Christian discipleship. I look around at our two congregations, Faith and Christ Lutheran, and I wonder how many of us are trying to do and be everything just because we can? How often do you say yes to opportunities that come up, not just in the church, but throughout all of life, without first considering if this is where God is truly calling you right now? I ask this knowing that certainly there seems to be more work to do than there are people willing to do the work. There s always a need for someone to sign up and serve in some way in the church. We always have one more weekend of worship where we need people to usher read and operate the equipment. There s always one more Wednesday meal that needs to be prepared and served. All of this work matters and if you re helping with these things, know that you are appreciated. I appreciate Raquel s words because I also know that there 4 5

6 are times when we need to say no to something. For Raquel Lettsome, her call at this time in her life, is first to be a parent to two young children who need her around. This means she says no to some pretty lucrative and attractive opportunities because she knows this is not where God is calling her right now. If you are struggling to figure out when and if it s ok to say no, please pay attention to how God is calling you in your life before you take on more opportunities just because you can. This can be hard work. It requires a sense of selfawareness and spiritual maturity to know how you are gifted and called in this life. Ask yourself what it is that you are extremely passionate about and ask God how you might tap into your passions to help meet the needs of others. Think also about the choices you make and if they give you energy. Are you excited about serving on a certain committee or teaching Sunday school? I hope you are. But if you find these things exhausting, trust that God will bring someone else along who does have the right passions and gifts to fill that role and then get out of the way. Leave others encouraged and empowered to live out their God-given callings and remain open to new ways that God might be calling you. As we move further into a new year, I look forward to joining you as together we recommit ourselves to seeking God s will, sharing God s love and serving as Christ s people in the world. See you in church! Pastor Dawn So, speaking of intentional interims By Pastor Len The Transition Team at Faith Lutheran has been convened and is beginning it s work. The committee consists of Ann Kirlin, Lexy Fansen, Kris Cuperus, David Clarke, Lavonne Goering and Carren Voss. They have agreed to meet twice monthly to start --- meeting on Sunday mornings before worship at 7:30 a.m. Together with Pastor Len they will be working their way through a book entitled, Beginning Ministry Together. They will be in conversation with members and the bishop as well as engaged in some other research. The intention is to begin a Transition Team for Christ Lutheran in approximately three months. Love Is... Patient Kind Not jealous Not boastful Not proud Not rude Not demanding of its own way. Not irritable Not keeping record of wrong Not rejoicing in injustice Rejoicing whenever truth wins out. Never giving up Never losing faith Always hopeful Enduring through every circumstance. ~from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 7

8 Lent 2018: Don t forget to add personal discipline and community worship to your Christian life this year. On the personal side, you may choose to give something up as an act of selfdenial; Sugar? Alcohol? Caffeine? A bad habit? Or you may choose to pick something up with the goal of growth of faith. Daily prayer? Reading Scriptures? Acts of kindness? On the community side, here is our worship schedule: On Ash Wednesday we remember our own frailty, receiving the imposition of ashes. We join together in Corporate Confession in this worship, but the words of forgiveness are withheld. (Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine s Day this year. It s up to you to determine how to balance these; Valentines will not be the theme of our worship. ) For the next five weeks our Wednesday worship follows the journey of Christ to the cross and also hear witness from some of our members who share of their personal faith journey. The Transfiguration story (Mark 9:2-9) concludes with the simple reminder that Jesus and the disciples couldn t remain in the mountain top experience, but rather came back down the mountain. From that time on they progressed to the city of Jerusalem and the cross on Golgotha. Together we will read and consider five locations and stories that were encountered along the way. ~ Week #1 Jericho --- and Blind Bartimaeus. ~ Week #2 Bethany --- and the fig tree. ~ Week #3 The treasury --- and the Widow s mite. ~ Week #4 The Mount of Olives --- and signs of the end ~ Week #5 Gethsemane --- and the prayer of Jesus On Maundy Thursday there are three themes: First, the words of forgiveness are spoken; it has been a long five weeks. Second, we celebrate Holy Commun- ion and welcome the congregation s 5 th graders to the fellowship of the altar. And third, the altar is stripped as we enter into the solemnity of Good Friday and Holy Sat. On Good Friday we remember with awe the crucifixion of our Lord. ~ There are several tried and true ways to observe this alone: read Mark 15. Observe darkness. (Scriptures say that darkness covered the face of the earth from noon until 3:00.) If you are able, turn out your lights and live with only dim, secondhand light for these 3 hours. Step into a windowless room and pray/contemplate in darkness with your eyes open for several minutes. ~ Come to worship Friday evening and contemplate again the stations of the cross; as we have visual reminders of the traditional events in the journey that Jesus took from his trial to his crucifixion. On Holy Saturday we remember the day that Jesus lay in the grave. ~ Again, find some solemn moment alone and consider the concept. Consider Mark 15: ~ Come to worship for the Easter Vigil. AND ON THE THIRD DAY JESUS ROSE AGAIN! ~Pastor Len 9

This replaces the 10% budgeted but less than 1% paid in mission support in the past year. That thought comes from Henri Nouwen, a Dutch theologian, in a book called, Aging, The Fulfillment of Life. He also believes the process of aging can become a process of growing toward the light for those who find joy and meaning through all of life s experiences and transitions, both good and bad. He thinks the three qualities that enable people to grow toward the light instead of darkness are HOPE, HUMOR, and VISION. Our Health Ministry Team is going to focus on growing toward the light this year. We are going to have a couple Sunday Conversations to help us with information and sharing about transitions we all will gain from learning about in our aging process. Arlyn Stokesbary will be leading a Sunday Morning Conversation on issues such as long term care insurance, and other questions about saving financially and sharing our gifts helping us have vision as we grow. This will be on Sunday morning, February 25 during the 9 AM Sunday School hour in the Chapel Lounge. And Todd Hieronimus from Totzke Funeral Home will be leading a Sunday Conversation on funeral planning, something that every person and every family has to deal with at some time in life. I m sure there will be hope and humor and vision in this conversation somewhere~ This will be on Sunday, March 18 during the 9 AM hour. It isn t too early for any adult to be thinking about these topics so hope you will join us, whether younger or older! Come with your questions as we all grow toward the light. 17
