Christ Lutheran News August, September, 2017 God of shop and marketplace, Of farm and studio, Factory and shipping lane, Of school and busy home: Bless the produce of our hands. Redeem our work for Kingdom-use. By Your grace, our efforts stand, All offered up to You. There in Eden, You proclaimed That we should work the earth Stewards over all we named, Delighting in their worth. Through our fall we brought decay, Lost access to Jehovah s rest. Through the cross, we rest in faith And all our labor s blessed. In Your image we are made: Creative like You are, Forming goods for use and trade Just like You formed the stars. Send us out in power and skill To worship through each task assigned. By Your Spirit we fulfill The holy, grand design. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Dawn s Desk... 4 For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, The one who is righteous will live by faith. Romans 1:16-17 The chief article and foundation of the gospel is that before you take Christ as an example, you recognize him as a present that God has given you and that is your own. Martin Luther These two verses summarize Paul s theme in his letter to the Romans. They tell us how the gospel or the Good News of Jesus Christ works in us through God s power and gives us our salvation. These two verses were central to Martin Luther s faith and to his writing and teaching. Through these two verses, Luther found a completely new understanding of God s righteousness as a gift. Years later, as he reflected on Romans, Luther remembered, a totally other face of the entire Scripture showed itself to me. He realized that our salvation is completely dependent on what God does in us, giving away his righteousness as a free gift. For Luther, this realization changed everything. Once Luther understood how God works on our behalf, his entire image of God was changed. No longer was God a harsh and distant being demanding good works from us in order for us to be saved. Instead, Luther found in Scripture a God who is gracious and who promises us this great gift of salvation through the work of Jesus Christ crucified. Instead of reading Scripture to find examples and models for how we should live, Luther pointed to Jesus Christ as a gift who is found at the center of all Scripture. This means that rather than trying to imitate Christ s example, we first receive him as a gift. He wrote that when you see or hear of Christ doing or suffering something, you do not doubt that Christ himself, with his deeds and suffering, belongs to you With these convictions, Luther believed that God s Word is more than just some words written on paper. God s Word is a living voice that is woven into our entire lives and our entire beings. All of humanity is affected and touched by God s Word in a variety of ways. In the context of community, God s Word comes alive in our response to God s grace as we seek to love and serve one another. Knowing that our identities as Children of God are secure, we then look to Christ as a model for how we live and how we treat others. This changes not only the way we read and study God s Word, but also the way we hear the preaching of God s Word. The most valuable thing that one can take away from a good sermon is the proclamation of Jesus Christ crucified and resurrected for you. There are plenty of other ways to learn how to live a better life. Just do an internet search on moral living and you ll find plenty of books, websites and videos that will help you. But, when the preacher is in the pulpit, the gift of Jesus Christ crucified and resurrected, is the most essential thing you should hear. Whenever you gather for worship as people of God, remember to listen and to watch for the many ways that God s Word shows forth Jesus Christ as the source of life and of salvation. Know that you have God s forgiveness and that you are justified and made righteous only because of Christ, who is our Lord and Savior. See you in church! Pastor Dawn 5

10 Embrace God s Mission: Equip God s People Our Southwestern Minnesota Synod has been involved in this funding initiative for the past year, raising funds to help strengthen congregations and pastors in a variety of ways. The needs to be addressed fall into three main categories: Enhance Local and Global Mission Deepen Congregational Vitality Develop Servant Leaders We will be explaining more about these categories in the next two months, giving you an opportunity to make donations to this project as you are able. Already in our Synod about $1 million has been pledged or given, out of a goal of $2.5 million! On the next page you will see an article, A Time to Move Forward, which will give you an overview of this Initiative. Radio Broadcast Ministry The next available dates are August 27, September 17 and October 29 (Confirmation Sunday). Checks ($65) can be made out to Christ Lutheran with Radio Broadcast in the memo or you can pay online by visiting our website. Extra Produce? As gardens begin to mature, if you have an over abundance of produce, the MC Food Shelf does accept donations of produce. You may contact or The Food Shelf is open on Wednesday afternoons. A TIME TO MOVE FORWARD Cultural change is the only constant. For followers of Jesus, it means a swiftly changing mission field in which to proclaim the Good News. Our synod stands at a pivotal moment to address that change! We are called to be embraced by God s vision and sent to equip people to serve this current mission field. After deep listening among congregations, lay and pastoral leaders, our 2016 Synod Assembly voted overwhelmingly to support three areas to focus our energy for growth: Deepen Congregational Vitality Enhance Local and Global Mission Develop Servant Leaders All three areas equip God s people to embrace the future with courage. We, the people of our Southwestern Minnesota Synod, are moving forward with hopefulness and expectation. We are acting today and preparing for the future. Your support is invited to create healthier congregations and leaders in these congregations who do God s work locally and globally. Are you ready to join this movement to do God s work today? We invite your support! The Funding Initiative Vision and Mission: Embrace God s Mission + Equip God s People God calls and empowers us to make disciples. Our mission as a synod calls us to empower and equip congregations and their leaders to serve God s purpose and call in Jesus Christ. Through this funding initiative, resources are being gathered to invest in congregations, local and global mission, and to develop lay and rostered servant leaders. The investment has begun. We can do even more! 11 Women of Christ Lutheran Church Parish Nurse Ministry Our Mission: To mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. August Visitation: Love Circle September Visitation: Peace Circle Bible Study Leaders Thursday, September 7 at 5:15 pm Peace Circle Wednesday, September 13 at 9:30 am Faith Circle Wednesday, September 13 at 1:30 pm Love Circle Sunday, September 11 at 7:00 pm Quilting Monday, August 21 and Tuesday, August 22 at 1:00 pm Monday, September 25 and Tuesday, September 26 at 1:00 pm 5 Questions to ask Kids~ I recently read an article about talking to children by Alissa Ellett, a person who works with Illustrated Children s Ministry. Here are her suggestions about questions to ask kids. What made you laugh today? It is good to focus on what they experienced, not just what they did. And you might find yourself laughing together! When did you help someone recently? I like the idea of inspiring a child to focus on being a helper and serving others. What are you feeling grateful for this week? We are never too young to find joy in being grateful, and the author, Alissa Ellett, says there is deep wisdom in gratitude. What has been a challenging part of your day? This question can help kids recognize that navigating hard things can be a time to learn about God s faithfulness. How have you experienced God this week? I think this is a question for all of us to consider as we learn to trust and connect with God. I think these questions might be a good way to connect with kids in perhaps a more meaningful way than just asking How was your day? Blessings to all students as they head back to school. Handmade Greeting Cards are available in the Library for $1 each. Proceeds will go to WCLC

22 WELCA Triennial Gathering Report Thank you to the Women of Christ Lutheran for paying my registration to attend the 10 th Triennial Gathering of the Women of the ELCA July in Minneapolis. Gayle Davidson and Ruth Hoyme were also able to attend parts of the Gathering. I am grateful for the experience and wanted to briefly share with you some of that experience. To give you an idea of the size and scope of this event, there were 3,322 people attending representing every state and 12 countries! There were 27,000 hygiene items collected (including 3 bags from Christ Lutheran) and $19,000 in gift cards (including $300 worth from our women). So, a huge thank you to the VBS children and any who donated money or items. The in-kind gifts went to several different agencies, including familiar ones like Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota, and Lutheran World Relief but also Alice s Garden, an urban farm and community garden in Milwaukee, Breaking Free which works with victims of sex trafficking, Days for Girls which provides menstrual kits and health education to women and girls in more than 100 countries, and Families Moving Forward which helps homeless families with children find stable housing. The Triennial Gathering had many highlights for me. I enjoyed hearing our national bishop, Elizabeth Eaton preach at the opening worship. I attended a concert of the National Lutheran Choir at Central Lutheran Church on Saturday night which was actually more of a worship experience with devotions and lots of congregational participation, too. Singing Blessed Assurance in that beautiful space with the pipe organ and 2,000 voices raised in song was truly a Holy Spirit moment for me. The theme of the Gathering was All Anew. It was a thrill for me to hear Leymah Gbowee speak, a Nobel Peace Prize winner from Liberia. As she said so eloquently, all anew is not an event, it is a process each morning Jesus how wonderful you are! He is renewing us daily and not just for our selfish purposes but to change the world. Her repeated question was, With what group of people is God calling you to align? Whose corner are we in? We need to stand up for justice and peace. This was truly a theme running throughout the event in the sermons, worship, speakers, and workshops. The familiar passage from Micah 6:8 sums it up: For what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God. Feel free to speak with me, or Gayle Davidson or Ruth Hoyme, if you d like to hear more about our experiences at the Triennial Gathering. --Marcia Kunze Women s Bible Study September Session 1: Apostles Creed: I believe in God The Apostles Creed is one of the oldest unifying symbols of Christianity. Groups of early Christians needed a tool for teaching and evangelism that explained the basics of the faith. The Apostles Creed shaped their baptismal training, blessing in dying and how communities of faith defined themselves in faithful union. The creed has three parts or articles. The first article talks about God, the Holy Creator and Parent of all things. We ll explore what the Apostles Creed says about God and what it leaves undefined as well as how this stirs our holy imagination. 23

28 Hearts and Hands of Murray County Sharing the love in our hearts through the work of our hands Matthew 22: Hearts and Hands of Murray County was founded in February of 2017 by a group of concerned citizens looking to fulfill unmet needs and share the love of Christ in our community. We are a tax exempt organization due to our partnership with THREE Ministries, Inc. as our fiscal host. The business of Hearts and Hands of Murray County is conducted through a 5 member Board of Directors with strong ties to the community and a passion for helping those in need. Our mission is to help individuals and families to fill needs when no other organization can. The Board of Directors has total control of funding and all donations will stay right here in Murray County. We are currently in the process of raising money to fund the following upcoming projects: Shop With a Cop This program will match needy elementary-aged students with local law enforcement officers. The officers will assist the students in filling a backpack with all of the school supplies they will need for the upcoming year. It is also an opportunity for officers to have a positive interaction with students whose parents may have been incarcerated or arrested in the past. If enough funds are raised, we would also like to provide a new pair of tennis shoes for each student as well. Lori Manderscheid Activity Scholarship This scholarship was started with seed money donated in memory of Lori Manderscheid. Its purpose is to help provide needy children with the opportunity to participate in healthy activities. (Sports, music, the arts, camps, etc.) This scholarship will help pay activity fees associated with school related or extra-curricular activities. It can also be used to help pay for any necessary equipment needed for a particular activity. Anita s Angel Tree This program helps provide Christmas gifts for older children ages 12-18, a group who is often forgotten during the holidays. This program has been active in Murray County since 2006, and will be taken over by the Hearts & Hands of Murray County this year. The program is named in memory of Anita Ackerman, who was a strong supporter of the Angel Tree. Cinderella s Closet A dream for our future! Our organization is in the process of planning a prom dress recycling event that will provide low-income young ladies with a beautiful dress for their big day. More details to come! We are contacting local churches and community organizations to inform you about the exciting work Hearts and Hands of Murray County is doing right here in your own backyard. Our programs can only be carried out through the generous support of our friends and neighbors. Won t you please consider giving a financial gift today?
