1 Christ Lutheran News November, 2018 Come, Ye Thankful People, Come Come, ye thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest home; All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin. God our Maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied; Come to God s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home. All the world is God s own field, fruit unto His praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown unto joy or sorrow grown. First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear; Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be. For the Lord our God shall come, and shall take His harvest home; From His field shall in that day all offenses purge away, Giving angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast; But the fruitful ears to store in His garner evermore. Even so, Lord, quickly come, bring Thy final harvest home; Gather Thou Thy people in, free from sorrow, free from sin, There, forever purified, in Thy garner to abide; Come, with all Thine angels come, raise the glorious harvest home. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

3 From the Interim... Size Matters! Part of the duties of an intentional interim pastor is be an observer of the congregations that they serve. Interims are often able to see things long term members of the congregation can t because they have fresher eyes. So, in the past almost 2 months I ve been making some mental observation. I applaud the members of the congregation for wanting to move forward in a new way and in a new direction. It appears for all intents and purpose this is mandatory for all congregations today, to reevaluate and restructure in order to be relevant to today s worshipers and to be an active presence in the communities that they are planted. I hesitate to applaud to loudly or to vigorously. I have observed that I still am hearing the seven last words of the church come from people s mouths. You know the words, We ve never done it that way before or this is the way we did it last year. I ve also observed people falling into very familiar habits at worship. Not necessarily bad words or bad habits but problematic when congregations the size of Christ Lutheran want to create a new and vigorous future. Such words and actions are usually found in congregations that are Family size, 50 active members or Pastoral size, 50 to 150 active members. One pastor along with a dedicated leadership core are able to live with the things the way they have always been or to do the same thing over and over again because the numbers are there to explore new and innovative programs and events. This isn t the case with Program sized congregation like Christ, 150 to 350 active members. The role of the pastor and the role of the leadership changes. To be sure, a member can expect a hospital or home call from the pastor when personal crisis or illness strikes. But members had better not expect their pastor to have a lot of time to drink coffee in people s kitchens. To see the pastor about a parish matter, they will probably have to make an appointment at the church office several weeks in advance. When clergy move from a Pastoral Church to a Program Church, unless they are able to shift from a primarily interpersonal mode to a program planning and development mode, they will experience tension and difficulty in their new congregation. It is not that clergy will have no further need for their interpersonal skills. Far from it-they need to depend on them even more. But now those interpersonal skills will be placed at the service of the parish program. The role of the pastor ends up being a little more distant, a little less personal and a lot more of a teacher, trainer and an equipper of members to do ministry. I have observed that some of the members of Christ Lutheran are okay with this shift in the role of their pastor. Notice how that is singular. Christ is also moving from two pastors to one, another large change. This even more reason that every member needs to be willing to be a part of their being a do of ministry rather than a receiver of ministry. The question is, Are the members of Christ Lutheran able to do this? We can if God the helps and guides us. The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love he will rejoice over you with Singing. ZEPHANIAH 3:17 4 5

7 Can you help? As the church council is working hard to put things together during this time of transition, we also are dealing with the difficulty of balancing our budget, and trying to keep up with some of the general maintenance and repairs, that we see are needed to make our church sustain and move forward! As you look around our church and church buildings you may see or feel that the church and/or buildings may need the following: Professional carpet cleaning & re-gluing of the carpet in church, narthex, and hallways The fellowship hall floor could use stripping, waxing, and re-gluing of some tiles 12 We are getting bids to do some of this work, however at this time our financial stability at church is still trying to get caught back up in this time of transition. If you feel you can contribute extra to one of the projects above, please contact the church office with your donation to that specific project and once we have meet the cost we will do the work! The women will be making lefse on Wednesday, November 14 at 2:00 in the kitchen. The lefse that is made will be sold at the bake sale on Saturday. Extending the Table Ministry Extending the Table Ministry, which will extend Christ Lutheran s communion table to those who are homebound, is almost ready to begin. Watch the bulletin for an upcoming training. Please contact Pastor Grant if you would like more information about this ministry.
