Christ Lutheran News May, 2018 A Mother s Prayer ~Ruth H Underhill Make my children sweet, Lord, In thy tender loving eyes; Keep them ever healthy And please, Lord, make them wise. Make them kind and gentle, Lord, Toward others round about; Place within them faith in thee; Never let them doubt. Make my children patient, Lord. Let them always share The blessings you have given them With those in need of care. Give them tender loving hearts As the great love sent from thee; Make them happy, filled with joy, And always let them thankful be. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Dawn s Desk... 4 Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. - Hebrews 13:1-2 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. - 1 Peter 4:9-10 It seems as though the theme of hospitality has come up quite often lately. I have become increasingly aware of the importance of hospitality for the church and have been a part of several conversations lately that have reminded me that now, more than ever, the congregations of Faith and Christ Lutheran Churches need to be intentional about practicing hospitality towards others. So, it surprised me when I attended a recent Shetek Conference Pastor s Gathering and this same theme of hospitality was lifted up during our worship together. Then, the May 2018 issue of Gather magazine for The Women of the ELCA arrived and the Intergenerational Devotion, written by Rev. Julie A. Kanarr focuses on biblical welcome and hospitality. You can call this a coincidence, but I wonder if God is not up to something in this. Perhaps God is nudging us to pay more attention to the ways we as individuals and as the church might better show hospitality to others. I have been blessed throughout my life by the hospitality of others when I least expected or deserved it. I think of the couple who graciously pulled over on an interstate once when I ran out of gas. They drove me to the next exit, paid for a few gallons of fuel and returned me safely to my vehicle while adding gas to my tank. I never got their names and never saw them again. They extended grace and hospitality without expecting anything in return. Then I think of all of the ways the church has extended hospitality to me. As an awkward and insecure teenager, some of my peers extended kindness to me by including me in various youth activities and groups at church. They didn t care about whether I fit in with the popular kids at school or if I was gifted athlete or musician or student. (Which, by the way, I was none of these things.) All that mattered to them was that I was there and I wanted so badly to have a place where I felt I really belonged and could be myself. By helping to create this kind of space for me at church, they were practicing hospitality without even knowing it. So, I challenge you, dear church, to look for those individuals in your community and your church who are longing for hospitality. Find them and generously share your hearts, your space, your lives and your time with them. This is important wherever you go throughout your day. It s especially important, however, in terms of how we are the church for others. Whether your church is growing, or, as is the case with Faith Lutheran, your church will soon be closing, hospitality matters. We gladly welcome others to worship with us, and to live and serve alongside of us, regardless of where we find ourselves in this life. Once in a while, people will tell me that they aren t sure about how to invite people to church or welcome them when they do show up. Some think they re too shy and others are afraid they might offend someone. My response to these concerns can be summed up best by going back to how hospitality is described in 1 Peter 4:10, Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. This means that no matter what kind of personality you have or what kinds of gifts you might possess do what you do out of love. Serve others with your unique gifts and make sure that all people know that they are valued. What matters most is that you are using your unique gifts to love and serve others. In other words, by showing hospitality to others, you are practicing good stewardship. You are being a steward of God s grace whenever you welcome others to worship or a committee meeting or Sunday school class. Every day we have new opportunities to care for something or someone so that they might thrive to the glory of God! See you in church! Pastor Dawn 5

Council Minutes 6 So, speaking of intentional interims By Pastor Len The CLC council had a bonus meeting on April 24 in order to process the nominations received from the congregation and begin to appoint a Transition Team for the congregation. Nominations were solicited during several worship services in April. Over 100 different people submitted nominations of over 70 different people. Over 70! It is wonderful that CLC has so many capable and dedicated individuals in whom the members of the congregation have confidence. At the April 24 meeting, the council participated in a lengthy but effective process that concluded with the names of 7 individuals; the council believes that these seven will serve the congregation well. As you read this, those 7 folks are considering whether or not to accept this challenge. Once the team is official you will be informed of their names and asked to hold them in prayer. The intention is to conduct a condensed version of a transition study and get as far as possible in the month of May. After the TT has completed its work the council will proceed to the appointment of a Call Committee. Christ Lutheran Church Summary of Executive Council Minutes April 11, 2018 The meeting was called to order by President Stelter. Steve Telkamp of the Nominating Committee met with the council for direction in dealing with committees that were dealing with non-participating members. A contact will be made with those persons. The Personnel and Memorial Committee appointments continue. The Treasurer s Report was reviewed. Expenses have been higher than normal due to the winter conditions (heat, snow removal). The property and management committee was encouraged to request snow removal bids early this fall. A temple talk will be prepared for the congregation. The shortfall in contributions and the increase of operating expenses has required a transfer from our savings account of $22,000. The Pastor s reports were reviewed. Discussion was held regarding the current job descriptions that are currently in our Church handbook. Many of these position descriptions need to be updated and the current responsibilities not being performed need to be addressed. The Personnel Committee will be dealing with these concerns. Greg and Nancy Moberg will represent Christ Lutheran Church at the June Synod Convention. President Stelter informed the council that our bank advised against establishing a line of credit for our financial needs. This will be readdressed. The development of the Transition Team will begin. This team will develop our Congregational Study, which is needed for our Pastor Call preparations. Note cards will be handed out at the next 3 weekly services to collect nominations for potential team members. The Council will be meeting April 24, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. to review the submitted names and create this team. Committee members and Council members are to attend 7

A Message from Christ Lutheran s President... 8 the new member orientation for introduction and to describe committee responsibilities directly before the council meeting begins. A request was made from the Thrivent Choice Dollars account of $700 dollars to assist in the National Youth Gathering expenses. Request failed due to lack of a motion. It was mentioned that there were several internal items of great concern within our congregation; length of sermons, lack of custodial duties being performed, length of worship services for parents with children, etc. Due to conflicts with a women s event the May meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 8, The announced dissolution of Faith Lutheran created much concern and discussion. Board Reports Mission Outreach: Planned New Member Sunday reception Parish Ed: Planned S.S. teacher appreciation gifts, VBS planning has begun WCLC: Baked potato Dinner earned +$1,500. The May 9 th Mother s Day event will have an emphasis on honoring our past, present and future Women of Christ Lutheran. Tickets are available for $2.00 Property and Management: Manderscheid Const. will install the parsonage window Worship and Evangelism: Flowers were ordered for first communion, worship schedule completed, flowers and reception for senior recognition Sunday discussed. Tim Lange will have a temple talk about Time and Talents on May 5 and 6. Youth: Worked on youth involvement, WWAM meals, Scholarships, confirmation activity. Request Thrivent funds for ELCA College Scholarships will happen at the May meeting The meeting was closed with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted Kathy Behrends Greetings, I wanted to take this opportunity to update the congregation on the work of the Church Council. In the last few months, the Council has been diligent in reviewing various aspects of our Church operations, including our church budget and the joint agreement with Faith Lutheran among many others. Understandably, I know that questions have arisen about what the future holds in this time of transition. I would like to briefly touch on a few matters in an effort to ensure our congregation remains informed throughout this process. We have seen a decrease in our weekly giving over the last several months. We have also had unanticipated expenses, such as a remote sound system, heating and snow removal etc. The Council started working on a long term plan to bring our income in line with our expenses. You can expect to hear more about this as time passes. In the meantime, I urge all of us to prayerfully analyze our current weekly offering. On May 20 th, Faith Lutheran Council will hold a Congregational meeting to formally start the process of dissolution. At that time, Faith Lutheran will also try to select a specific date in which to dissolve the religious organization. Obviously this has been a very extensive and stressful process, but Faith has been open and honest with Christ Lutheran Council during this time, so let s make sure we continue to be understanding in Faith Lutheran s decision and timeline moving forward. Please keep them in your prayers as they move through this difficult process. It is important that we provide any support we can offer and open our door to welcome any Faith members with compassion and Christ s love. Christ Lutheran Council has nominated seven people to serve on the Transition Team. Letters of Call have 9

10 been sent to those people and the team will be announced once the nominated individuals accept the call. Thank you all for the overwhelming response in nominations. There were over 70 nominations, all of whom would do a fantastic job on this team. I think this illustrates how blessed our congregation is. Once established, the Transition Team will: Reach out and have a thorough discussion with all committees, as well as across many other areas within our parish; Hold meetings throughout the month of May and begin our congregational profile by the end of May; and Compile all information gathered throughout the process and provide a recommendation as to how our church would like to move forward. Pastor Len has given his 30 day notice and will be resigning effective May 31 st. One of Pastor Len s primary responsibilities is to guide the formation of the transition team. Pastor Len has made it a priority to direct and guide this team during his remaining time with our Church. An interim pastor normally does not have a role in the call process once a congregational profile is complete. The Council will be working with the Synod to find pulpit supply to assist Pastor Dawn in the upcoming months. There are several weddings and other events that Christ Lutheran will be hosting in the coming months. It will take additional help to make sure our church is presentable. We will be announcing a spring clean-up date very soon to clean both the inside of our Church and the grounds surrounding the Church. We re planning on starting on the inside of the church as soon as late this week. If any of you are willing to assist in cleaning, inside or out, or if you are willing to assist Dawn Mouw with some light office duties during this busy time, please contact the Christ Lutheran office at Any help is greatly appreciated. The Council will continue to address all of these items as promptly and efficiently as possible. Keeping this in mind, there is no concrete timeline in which the transition progress will happen. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Council members with any questions you may have. Please remember how blessed we are as a congregation and how much we offer to each family we serve. I have seen firsthand the excitement and willingness from so many members who have dedicated time and offered to help out in many different ways. Thank you all very much! God Bless, Mike Stelter The following was printed in the May Newsletter at Faith Lutheran Church: What s happening at Faith Lutheran? Many of us have heard this question from other community members, families and even a few distant friends and family members with ties to Faith Lutheran church. As the congregation has begun the process of dissolution, or closing, people have expressed valid concerns for the well being of those affected by this process. Realizing how important transparency and accurate information is for our life together during these next few months, here are a few points of information that might be helpful. More specific details related to this process are provided in the church council minutes and written letters and announcements that have been or will be made available. In the past year or so, there have been several public congregational discussions regarding the future of Faith 11

Financial Information Evangelical Lutheran Church in Avoca, MN. No decisions were made during these public discussions. On April 8, 2018, a special congregational meeting was held at Faith Lutheran to discuss the current financial situation and to give direction to the Church Council. A motion was made and it was unanimously passed to encourage the Church Council to proceed with the process of desolation (closing). The Church Council met on April 12, 2018 and voted to dissolve this corporation and to call a special meeting on May 20 th to take further action towards dissolution, seek permission to transfer assets, including all real estate and personal property and to determine a date for our last worship service together. The process has begun to create a legally separate Cemetery Association. This association will include Lime Lake and Faith Evangelical Lutheran Cemeteries. When this process is complete, the cemeteries will no longer be the legal property of Faith Lutheran Church in Avoca. No decisions have been made at this time about the parsonage. This matter has been delegated to several Church Council members with the understanding that all final decisions related to such assets will be made by the Congregation. On this page you will find a brief overview of the month s offerings. It is our goal to provide you with actual, updated information about Christ Lutheran s financial status. Following our annual meeting, the congregation voted on the 2018 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $24, each month to cover our anticipated ministry expenses. 3% of your offerings each month will be sent to the Synod office to meet our Synod Mission Support goal. ~Ronda Radke, Treasurer & Dawn Mouw, Office Manager Here s a look at where we ended March: Beginning Balance: $ (6,596.40) Receipts: $ 21, Expenses: $ 3824, Borrow from Savings: $ 2, Ending Balance: $ (7,611.71) The gray bar shows our actual offerings through April 30. The black bar is our budgeted offering total. Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton has received notice that Faith Lutheran will likely close in the next several months. Therefore, the shared ministry agreement with Christ will be ending when Faith officially closes. Please feel free to speak with a Church Council member at Faith or a pastor if you are unclear about any of these matters. We value your input and want to make sure that accurate information is available

A while back I wrote about advanced directives, how to plan ahead for your health care. Today I m going to tell you about a different kind of writing called a Legacy Letter, or sometimes known as an Ethical Will. This is a way of sharing while you are still alive what truly matters to you and how you want to be remembered with your family and friends. It is not a legal document, and can be written in different forms, from a one page letter to something more complex. It s not a new phenomenon; there are instances in the Bible of this being done, and also in other cultures than Christianity. You can share your values, your faith, your hopes and dreams, your blessings and what you have learned in life. It s a way of tying up ends before you die, or can be just things you want to share with your children at any point in life, a real gift for them. Another positive in writing one is that we learn more about ourselves, and it can help us to identify and define our values and what we stand for, and then hopefully continue living them as you pass them on to others. I have not written a Legacy Letter, but I hope to. There is a lot of information on line, but a website I found very helpful is called Celebrations of Life- Past, Present and Future, a company in Minneapolis that helps you to live your life as you want to be remembered. Check it out. Radio Broadcast Ministry Radio broadcast sponsors are needed for May 6, 13 and 27. Cost is $65. 17
