1 Christ Lutheran News March 2016 Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving us so much that You sent Your only Son, Jesus, to become one of us, to suffer for us, to die for us, and to rise from the dead, to give us new life. As we celebrate Easter this year, may we reflect on the unending depth of Your love. Help us to share this precious gift with our families, friends, and all those who have yet to learn of the good news of Christ. May the beauty and new life of Spring be a reminder of our new life in Christ. Help us to share Your love with all those we encounter in our daily walk, as we continually strive to serve You in spirit, deed, and truth. Be with us, dear God, and remain in our hearts always and forever. May we find hope in the Cross this day, hope because Jesus is Risen! Amen. Hallelujah! This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. ~ 1 John 4:9 We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

3 From Pastor Ted s Desk... The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. ~1 Timothy 6:10 Our mid-week Lenten theme this year, The Abundant and Generous Life may seem unusual to you. Isn t Lent supposed to be all about sin, and repentance, and devotion to God? Why are we thinking about money and our attitudes towards it? I d have to go with Saint Timothy here, The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil Notice that Timothy did not say that money itself is evil. Money by itself is only a tool by which we trade our time and our skills with one another--purchasing the fruits of their time and skills. No, Timothy said it is the love of money which is a root of all kinds of evil. It is our fascination with money, and our pursuit of it, that often gets us into trouble. The second half of that verse is less familiar than the first part but equally insightful, In their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. prayer! For example, see Matthew 6--part of Jesus Sermon on the Mount, or read the parables of Jesus in Luke and notice how often themes of wealth, our use of it, and our trust in God s provision undergirds these parables! I am hoping that our Lenten theme, The Abundant and Generous Life, and the reading of the book, Your New Money Mindset by Brad Hewitt and James Moline will stimulate some thinking about our attitudes towards money and maybe even discussion between spouses, within families, and even with friends about the often-taboo topic of money. I pray that it may, indeed, lead us to repentance and a healthier perspective about money, one that recognizes that God provides for us very abundantly--abundantly enough, in fact, that we can be generous! ~Pastor Ted Kunze In fact, in our consumer-oriented, money-driven culture the love of money may be the number one thing of which we need to repent! We are continually being tempted to put our hopes and dreams in wealth, and in the possibility (the need?) of getting more. Maybe, though, it has always been this way. Jesus talked about money more often than about any other topic--even 4 5

6 The Abundant And Generous Life Jesus said, I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. --John 10:10 Our mid-week Lenten services are looking at what this abundant life from Jesus entails, and what gets in our way of enjoying it. We re also reflecting on insights from the book, Your New Money Mindset by Brad Hewitt and James Moline. These authors look at attitudes towards money in light of our Christian faith. Our Wednesday services use the Holden Evening Prayer service, and are preceded (6:15 PM) by a soup supper served by our youth. Worship times at Christ are 7:00 and at Faith, 6:00 (5:30 on Maundy Thursday) March 2-- Called to Community Luke 10:25-37 March 9-- The Secret of Contentment Matthew 6:25-37 March 16-- Standards of Success Luke 12:13-21 March 24 (Maundy Thursday)-- A Servant Heart John 13:1-17 (Faith at 5:30) Lenten Soup Suppers During the season of Lent, Christ Lutheran Youth are serving light soup suppers on Wednesday evenings prior to Lenten worship. All youth and their parents are asked to participate in these meals at least once during the season with serving, setting tables and cleaning up. If you have not yet been contacted about helping, please do so by contacting a member or the Youth Committee or the church office. Any money raised beyond the cost of expenses will help support future youth trips. Thank you. You are invited to join us for the special services of Holy Week (March 20-27) as we remember the climactic events of Jesus life as he died on the cross for us and rose from the dead on Easter. 7 Your Lenten Offerings Our mid-week Lenten offerings have been designated once again this year to support two of our local missions: Shetek Lutheran Ministry and Lutheran Campus Ministry in Marshall. Most of you are familiar with Shetek as a summer Bible camp, but it also provides retreats throughout the year as a time to get away, rest, and reflect on our Christian faith. Donations help the camp to hold down camp fees. The Campus Religious Center, on the edge of the state college campus, hosts both Lutheran and Catholic campus ministries. Jeff Greathouse is our ELCA Chaplain, and he works with students to lead regular worship, Bible study, fellowship events, and other activities to provide Christian support and encouragement. Donations help to fund these activities, and the cost of providing a chaplain. Thank you for your donations. Mission Support Jesus said, Go and make disciples of all nations ~Matthew 28:16 Our Mission Support offerings go where we cannot travel. Our ELCA has 305 mission personnel serving in 45 countries! 120 new congregations are under development in the United States. Your gifts to Christ Lutheran designated Mission Support will help this work! Designated envelopes are available in the church narthex or use your own. 12 Good Friday Stations of the Cross Christ Lutheran Church will be offering a Live Stations of the Cross experience on Friday, March 25 at 7:00 pm as a part of our Good Friday Worship. All participants will have the opportunity to journey through live portrayals of some of what Jesus endured during his final hours here on earth, including his arrest, trial and death. Following this, we will gather for a brief reflective time of worship in the sanctuary. Anyone is welcomed to participate in this event as an actor or by helping with staging, costumes or organizing and assisting with details. Please contact Pastor Dawn Quame for more information. Please consider making this an essential part of your Holy Week experience. March is Food Share Month During the month of March we will be having processional offerings during worship. At this time we will not only be collecting our general offerings, but also items and cash for the Murray County Food Shelf. (The Food Shelf is actually able to purchase more with the cash donated because of discounts and programs available to them.) The following items are currently needed at the Food Shelf: toilet paper; coffee and different kinds of teas; hot chocolate; baking goods - flour, sugar, brown sugar, chocolate chips, any items used for baking; Jell-O; instant pudding; cake mixes. Hunger fact: 46.2 million Americans are living in poverty 13
