1 Christ Lutheran News August September, 2018 Teacher Prayer By Joanna Fuchs Dear Lord, bless these teachers mightily as they seek to teach, enrich and guide Your precious children. Grant them abundant resources to do their job, intelligence, wisdom, sensitivity, kindness, and the material things that make it possible to turn some of these tender green plants into the strong, stable trees that will lead our nation, to transform some of these buds into brilliant flowers that will bring light, color and happiness to all who encounter them, and to give every one of them the tools to be creative, and productive and to develop their own kind of success in the world. Lord, wrap Your loving arms around these teachers who give so much of themselves to grow our youth into creative, responsible adults. We pray that You will immerse them in your boundless, transcendent love. We pray that You will strengthen and soothe them when they have given so much of themselves that they need Your extra attention, Your extra care. We love, respect and admire these teachers, Lord and we pray that you will watch over them always-- these special people who hold our children and our future in their hands. Amen. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

3 From Pastor Dawn s Desk... 4 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and time to lose; a time to keep, and time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 One of the things I especially appreciate about congregational ministry is the rhythm of life that we experience together. For the Lutheran church and other mainline denominations, we experience a rhythm throughout the year as we experience the different liturgical seasons in the church. God is present in all of the seasons of life, both liturgically and in other ways. God is there in times of joy and celebration as well as times of sorrow and uncertainty. This is certainly true right now for us as a congregation. Whether you are a part of Faith or Christ Lutheran Church, this is a time and a season of change. As hard as it is for me to even write these words, for all of us at Faith, this is a time to die. At least as an organized congregation, we are experiencing a death and a loss right now. It is also a time for us to weep and mourn. We will soon be closing our doors of our church building as well as the doors of a chapter in our life together. For Christ Lutheran Church, this is also a time of loss and change. We are experiencing the loss of our sister congregation in Avoca. We have shared ministry for a number of years as well as pastors. We have been in relationship together. We cannot pretend that things will stay the same at Christ Lutheran in Slayton. A part of us is dying. And, in this dying, there is hope for a future and a new life. In addition, you and I must say our goodbyes to one another in the next month. In all honesty, I have mixed emotions about my coming departure. I know that in times of transition and change, there are great opportunities for growth. When everything else we ve come to rely on seems to be stripped away, God s presence becomes even more obvious. We weep and mourn the end of the relationship we have shared as pastor and congregation. At the same time, we know that, in God s time, we will once again laugh and dance. Meanwhile, for all of us, the coming weeks and months are a time to heal. I encourage you to seek out those opportunities for those sometimes hard conversations that can lead to reconciliation. If you are struggling to even understand what has happened in your congregation in the past year or so, ask God for the right words to ask and the right time for you to speak. God will provide. In this newsletter, you will find several articles you may find helpful. One is written by our Conference Minister, Pastor Stephen Rasmussen about Saying Goodbye to Your Pastor. The other comes from our Southwestern MN Synod of the ELCA and is a more official document regarding pastors relating to former congregations. In particular, please know that I will not accept any invitations or requests to return to Christ Lutheran in any kind of pastoral capacity. This means I will not be available for baptisms, funerals, weddings or preaching or worship leadership. Please read and honor these guidelines for the sake of the church and the sake of the congregation that I will eventually serve. However, as brothers and sisters in Christ, please know that we will always remain connected. We have shared many joys and sorrows in the past 5 ½ years and have much to rejoice over. Regardless of where we find ourselves worshipping and serving in this world, we are still a part of the body of Christ. Thank you for sharing your lives with me and for trusting me as your pastor during our time together. See you in church! (Wherever that may be;-) Pastor Dawn 5

4 Council Minutes 6 Christ Lutheran Church Summary of Executive Council Minutes July 17, 2018 The Meeting was called to order by President Mike Stelter. Several members of the Transition Team and Pastor Stephen Rasmussen our Conference Minister were also in attendance. Reports were reviewed. Old Business: Gayle Davidson has consented to serve on the Personnel Committee. One additional member is needed. The Memorial Committee still needs to be filled. New Business: Pastor Rasmussen provided us with a Synod printing regarding Pastoral Ethics and his comments on saying Goodbye to Your Pastor. It was reported that Rev. Skoglund is working on an intentional Interim for CLC. The Transition Team provided the council with 4 items that they deemed to be the most important topics received from their focus meetings. They are: One ordained pastor with paid lay staff (maintaining full time office staff), Change Sunday service start time to 9:00 with Sunday school and coffee fellowship to follow, Create a mix of contemporary and traditional services, Increase the emphasis on being more welcoming, during worship and in our request for help at the different events. The team will now begin working on the Congregational Profile. This profile will be used by the call committee when interviews begins. The August Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 7, :00 p.m. Discussion was held regarding the start time for our Sunday Service. A motion was made to keep our Saturday evening services as it currently is with our Sunday Services to begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by Sunday school and Fellowship coffee at 10:15 a.m. This will begin on September 9, 2018 It was brought to the attention of the council that A Congregational Policy for Unrestricted Bequests to Encourage Generosity for Ministry and Mission policy was established on June 14, 2017 but not signed by the President and President-Elect. A motion was made to reaffirm this policy with the President and President-Elect signing the document for acceptance. There is currently one open position on the nominating committee. President Stelter will seek a member to fill this. President Stelter will meet with the nominating committee to explain the details and responsibilities required from call committee members. 5 Update from CLC Council... The Christ Lutheran Church Council has met several times with the Transition Team in the last two months. The T.T. has compiled all the congregational feedback and has begun filling out the Congregational Profile. In the meantime, the T.T. has given the Church Council a summary of items they felt we should share, as well as try to implement, as soon as possible. All recommendations that were made to Council have come from a majority of the Christ Lutheran Congregation members that spoke with the Transition Team. There are many more items that will be discussed in the very near future, but for now, here is the summary from the Transition Team: Christ Lutheran will be transitioning to one ordained pastor, plus paid lay staff and will maintain one full time office staff. The Synod is currently searching for a well experienced interim for CLC and the Council has begun the Call Committee Nomination process. CLC Service Time: Saturday Worship will remain as it currently is. Sunday Worship will be changing to 9:00 A.M. Worship, followed by Sunday School and Coffee Fellowship from 10:15 to 11:15 A.M. This will begin on Sunday, Sept 9 th, which will coincide with Rally Sunday which will include a BBQ, fellowship & games. For now, the Communion schedule will remain the same. A mix of Traditional and Contemporary Worship Service is wanted. We will start to see some of these changes taking place, in the very near future, with some new music being incorporated into our services. Increased emphasis on helping members to understand the finances of the church - explaining what it truly takes to operate a parish of our size and what appropriate levels of giving would look like. We re looking into additional ways of giving; electronically etc. Increased emphasis on being more welcoming as individuals and as a church. Try to get everyone involved, whether that be during worship, or to assist with different events / functions throughout the year. I would like to thank the Transition Team for the extensive amount of hours they have taken out of their days to host the Focus Groups and attend Transition Team meetings. The response from our congregation was fantastic. When you see a T.T. Member, please stop and thank them for their hard work. Although this is a time of transition, this is also a very exciting time! We have a strong congregation with positive energy and a bright outlook for our future. Great changes are on the way, some as soon as August. We are the hands and feet of God. We will get through this and be stronger because of it! God Bless, Mike Stelter 8 9

6 On Saying Goodbye to Your Pastor By Pastor Stephen Rasmusson, Winds of the Prairie Ministries, Ivanhoe area March 2016 Farewell. TIl we meet again. Later. Go with God. Saying goodbye is a spiritual practice. And like many spiritual practices, it does not pretend to be easy. Even though life is full of goodbyes, it does not mean that it is easier with practice. Even when we are surrounded by the powerful Easter promises of resurrection and new life, parting always feels like a moment eternally trapped in Holy Saturday, when Hope lies in the tomb and resurrection is not yet. It is a time of confusion for some, anger for others, hope for others, and intense grief for others still. It doesn t help that we Minnesotans are noted for the long goodbye. When a pastor leaves, the process of saying goodbye is even more difficult. The years of spiritual direction, the bedside visits, the moments of celebration and sorrow, of hurt and rejoicing that have shaped each of our experiences together betray the best and worst of human nature. Your pastor has had the privilege of presenting the person of Jesus in word and deed. And your pastor has shown you the deep brokenness of humans who dare to stand in the presence of God. 1. REJOICE: Recall the many times that you have been touched by a new insight into the grace and love of God that have been shown in the teaching and life of your pastor. Don t be afraid to say thank you in person or in a note to your leaving pastor. These moments will carry the spirit of your pastor into deeper service in Christ s name. Our church is a worldwide church, and your former pastor will bring a part of you into the new call. Rejoice that others will be blessed with the unique gift of grace proclaimed through her or his preaching and ministry. all human relationships before Christ. We forgive as we have been forgiven. If there is any sorrow for brokenness in the relationship, now is the time to set it right through forgiveness and repentance. 3. RESPECT: Your pastor has had the privilege of serving for a period of time as the person who holds the official office of pastor for you and your friends and family. It is helpful to respect the person of your pastor by respecting the office that he or she has held. When your pastor takes leave, the office stays. This means that, though you will continue to pray for and love the person who is leaving, you do not call on your former pastor to visit you when you are ill, have a crisis, need a funeral or a wedding performed, or the like. The new pastor, the person God will call to fill the Office of the Pastor will bring the word of grace into those situations for you. 4. REMEMBER: God is good all the time. As you reflect in future months and years on the work of God in your faith community when your leaving pastor was among you, do so with an eye to the future. God will have new ventures ahead, new visions of service and deepening of faith, new opportunities that will come with your new pastoral leadership. Look for the hand of God at work in your faith community s past, so that you can more easily see the Spirit in your future. And finally, don t forget the words at the center of the Lutheran Reformation tradition Soli Deo Gloria To God only is the praise. Praise God from whom all blessings flow now and forever. 2. RECONCILE: Hopefully your pastor has taught you how to repent, and to accept apologies. Reconciliation is at the center of (Continued on page 11) 10 11

I have always liked her ending to her newsletter articles-- See you in church. She knows the importance of being in church. She knows that God wants us to be in church to worship God yes, but also to be part of a group of people who can support us as individuals and help us grow in our faith. 12 22 Pastoral Ethics: The Ethics of Pastoral Transition Congregations and pastors need to understand the professional ethics of ministry relating to former pastors, interim pastors and current pastors. A pastor who resigns or retires from a congregational ministry setting no longer serves as pastor to members of this congregation. Former pastors should not agree to pastoral responsibilities that rightfully belong to the current pastor of the congregation. The PURPOSE of this paper is to clearly state the proper boundaries for former pastors, interim pastors, current pastors, and members of congregations relative to ongoing pastoral responsibilities and duties. Former Pastors If a former pastor is asked to officiate at a special service by members, he/she should respond immediately by saying: Thank you very much for asking me, but it is simply NOT appropriate for me to do that since I am no longer your pastor. The former pastor then encourages them to call their present pastor. It is very natural that members turn again to a former pastor who perhaps baptized their other children, or performed other weddings and funerals for family members while serving as the family s pastor. Again, with great sensitivity and love, the former pastor should graciously decline and direct the family to their current pastor. As with other family friends, the former pastor might attend the service as a guest. Former pastors should avoid the comment to members, You ll need to speak first to your present pastor about me doing this. Such a comment places the current pastor in the very awkward situation of having to relinquish the pastoral role to the former pastor, or saying no to the members request and thus appearing insensitive, uncaring or insecure. Interim Pastors The interim pastor is the current pastor of the congregation until that time comes when the new pastor assumes the role of pastor and (Continued on page 23) shepherd of the congregation. Whether part-time or full-time, the interim pastor should be contacted for all pastoral acts during the transition time. The former pastor should not be contacted by members to return to perform a pastoral responsibility during the transition. Current Pastors Current pastors should speak as positively as possible of the ministry of former pastors even though their style and vision might be very different. The current pastor should never feel pressured to relinquish his/her pastoral role to a former pastor. When a current pastor feels it is appropriate and healthy to invite a former pastor to return to participate in worship in a supportive role, he/she can certainly extend such an invitation. Members and Friends of the Congregation Members should avoid placing both the current and former pastors in awkward positions by seeking the pastoral services of a former pastor. Members should simply not ask for such favors from former pastors. By showing high regard to the current pastor, members affirm the significance of the pastoral office which was once held by the former pastor. If the congregation, council or current pastor experiences difficulties with proper boundaries being maintained, the bishop should be contacted. 23

Spend time in Christian community; enjoy good company, good food and lodging, and hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ. For more information call or check out our website at Shetek.org As you are probably aware, we had too much rain the beginning of July and the road to Keeley Island was under water. It was a challenge getting to camp and for several days we had to walk through the water to check on things. Since access was a problem, we had two retreat groups cancel and we also had to cancel our Sharing Our Services (SOS) camp week. We are doing a shorter SOS week in August for those campers who can make it, but not all will be able to. Would you be willing to help us recover some of that lost income by making an extra donation to camp at this time? We are still hopeful that we will meet our budget at the end of the year. Thank you! 31
