3 *Affirmation of Faith One: Christians, what do we believe as Cumberland Presbyterians? All: We believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended to the grave. The third day He arose from the dead. He ascended into heaven, where He shall sit at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from where He shall judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the everlasting life. Do this to remember me. The Reading Of The Word Old Testament Lesson Lamentations 1:1-6 The Affliction of Judah How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave. 2 Bitterly she weeps at night, tears are on her cheeks. Among all her lovers there is no one to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies. 3 After affliction and harsh labor, Judah has gone into exile. She dwells among the nations; she finds no resting place. All who pursue her have overtaken her in the midst of her distress.

6 4 The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to her appointed festivals. All her gateways are desolate, her priests groan, her young women grieve, and she is in bitter anguish. 5 Her foes have become her masters; her enemies are at ease. New Testament Lesson 2 Timothy 1:1-14 The Good Fight of Faith Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. 8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has

7 brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. 13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. *Gospel Luke 17:1-6, On Forgiveness and Gratitude Jesus said to his disciples: Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. 2 It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3 So watch yourselves. If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. 4 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying I repent, you must forgive them. 5 The apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith! 6 He replied, If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it will obey you. 11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, Jesus, Master, have pity on us! 14 When he saw them, he said, Go, show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were cleansed.

8 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus feet and thanked him and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner? 19 Then he said to him, Rise and go; your faith has made you well. Communion Responsive One: Around the world people gather to break bread and pour wine. All: We gather with them in heart and mind. One: Around the world the broken body is made whole. All: As part of that body, we join in its unity. One: Around the world the Banquet of God is prepared for the table. All: We, who share in the banquet, come eagerly to be fed. One: Let us worship together, let us share God s bounty. All: God calls us to the feast! The Institution and Consecration of The Lord s Supper The Invitation to the Table Holy Communion and the Lord s Table are open in that all who come in faith in Christ, regardless of church membership or denomination, are welcome. The Sharing of the Bread & Cup GOD SENDS HIS PEOPLE INTO THE WORLD *Hymn I Come With Joy Azmon I come with joy to meet my Lord, forgiven, loved and free, in awe and wonder to recall his life laid down for me.

10 I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ s communion bread.
