1 The United Benefice of Old Shoreham and Kingston Buci The Churches of, St Julian and St Giles Newsletter For Sunday 11 June 2017 Trinity Welcome to our worship where we celebrate Trinity Sunday Children: Sunday School in the Parish of Kingston Buci meets on the 2 nd, 3 rd, and 4 th Sunday of the month in the church hall at the beginning of the service and returns for communion. Toy bags are available in all churches as you come in at the door. Please feel free to make use of these facilities for your children. Need a lift to Church? 2 From the Vicar I bind unto myself the Name, The strong Name of the Trinity; By invocation of the same. The Three in One, and One in Three, Of Whom all nature hath creation, Eternal Father, Spirit, Word: Praise to the Lord of my salvation, Salvation is of Christ the Lord. From St Patricks Breastplate If you ve been around clergy enough you will hear of the dread this Sunday provokes. The pitfalls of Trinitarian theology are many and it is probably the most difficult Sunday to avoid heresy from the pulpit. This isn t surprising as the Church has fought for many centuries over the correct understanding of the Trinity. As British Christians with our Celtic heritage we are part of a tradition that has had a slightly less intellectual view on the Trinity. Celtic Christianity has had a more earthy approach to the Trinity. This includes stories of St Patrick explaining the Trinity with the help of the shamrock as well as poetry that reflects on our relationship with God and leaves behind attempts to over-explain complicated Trinitarian doctrine. Poems like St Patrick s Breastplate you might be singing this at church this Sunday or this one collected by Eleanor Hull show a more earthy, natural understanding of the Trinity: Three folds of the cloth, yet only one napkin is there, Three joints in the finger, but still only one finger fair, Three leaves of the shamrock, yet no more than one shamrock to wear, Frost, snow-flakes and ice, all in water their origin share, Three Persons in God: to one God alone we make our prayer. From Eleanor Hull, Poems of the Gael What we can see in both poems is the absence of any attempt to explain. They see God s works in nature and how God has made Godself known through it. It is not cerebral but emotional understanding. Something we might ponder in our highly intellectualised world. God bless, Fr James 2

3 Today s Worship Collect: Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Readings First Reading: Isaiah , Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the spirit of the Lord, or as his counsellor has instructed him? Whom did he consult for his enlightenment, and who taught him the path of justice? Who taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as dust on the scales; see, he takes up the isles like fine dust. Lebanon would not provide fuel enough, nor are its animals enough for a burnt-offering. All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. 3

4 He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Gospel: Matthew Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Post Communion Prayer: Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and live and reign in the perfect unity of love: hold us firm in this faith, that we may know you in all your ways and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory, who are three Persons yet one God, now and for ever. Within our local community we pray for St Mary s & Primary School, as well as the residents of Annington Gardens, Wolstonbury Way, Amberly Close and Wessex Walk. Those in need of our prayers specifically at this time: Jean Icke, Notices Family Coffee Morning 17th June 2017 from 10am: This month s coffee morning is being extended to include a BBQ from noon in ' Churchyard. There will be a selection of games and activities for children of all ages from 6 to 75!! Please come along and support the event, which is, with the extended July Coffee morning, being organised as an alternative to the annual Fete Festival. Introduction to St Matthew s Gospel: All are warmly invited to an introductory Bible Study on St Matthew s Gospel at the Rectory on 21 st June at 7pm. We are entering into Ordinary Time with Gospel readings taken from the Gospel according to Matthew. The next 20 odd Sundays will take us through the Gospel and we ll be exploring some of the major themes and background to the Gospel. Shoreham Gospels project: The Shoreham Gospels project is progressing well. If you would still like to take part please get in touch with John Simpson at and Russell Whiting at Kingston Buci. On 8 th July there will be a writing workshop where you are invited to help copy sections of the New Testament at Hall. More information to follow. Chalice Assistants/Pastoral Visitors Social: All chalice assistants/pastoral visitors in the Benefice are invited to Afternoon tea on Saturday, 24 June, 3pm at the Rectory. 6 Art for Newsletter front page: We are calling all (budding) artists to help contribute to creating the title page artwork for the Newsletter. For information and if you want to take part please talk to Fr James. Pilgrims and Family Services at : Our monthly Pilgrims Service will move from 1 st Sunday to the 2 nd Sunday of the month while the Family Service will move from the 3 rd Sunday to the 4 th Sunday. This change will begin in September with the first Pilgrims Service of the new term on Sunday, 10 th September.
