Eyeglass Collection The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Erie #515, will be collecting old eyeglasses over the summer months for donation to LensCrafters. These glasses are used for their One Sight program, which provides glasses to those living in impoverished countries, as well as those in our own country. 4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk Élijah prayed for death saying, Take my life, O Lord. There are times when things are going so badly, we say we just want to die. Most of the time we intend that metaphorically, though in today s story, Elijah seems to mean it quite literally. He is fleeing for his life, as Queen Jezebel is on his trail, furious that he has taken the lives of all her false prophets. He runs out of steam near a solitary tree just a day into the desert and asks God to end it all for him. It s not too clear whether he is fed up with the difficulty of his ministry or if he is really caught up in the horror of his actions, having just killed 450 prophets of Baal singlehandedly! Whatever the cause of his depressed mood, his frailty is evident. When he is at his lowest, God s messenger comes with food and water, and then encourages him to continue his journey. Thus strengthened, he resumes his trek for forty days, heading to Mt. Horeb (another name for Mt. Sinai), on a journey that mimics Israel s 40 year exodus. There on the mountain, like Moses, Elijah will encounter God. He will learn of God s non-violent ways, not finding God in the earthquake or the fire but in the silence that will instruct him to return and anoint new leaders for the people. In the gospel passage, there is some more murmuring about Jesus on the part of the people, just like the Israelites did with Moses last week. The problem is with the source of the food Jesus promises and he claims to be the very bread they need for life. And the emphasis seems to be on the Bread as the nourishing Word of God. It s the source of this word that is the point of contention. They all think they know Jesus, and isn t he just like one of them? They can t get it; they don t hear the Word or let it resonate within them. It will take time to come around, and then many still will not. How about us? What if we asked God to draw us into the One who is the Bread of Life. What nourishing word is being offered to us? Find a very still, quiet place. Wait for God s voice. What do you hear? The Bishop said that some equate Confirmation with graduation, and once the sacrament is celebrated, there wasn t a need to learn anything more about our faith. Just think if your physician never learned anything after med school, or nothing new was ever demanded of you at work or we were still stuck with Windows XP or those old Apple computers that were the first occupants of computer labs. Our faith development shouldn t be any different than our medical, technical or vocational and occupational development. Everyday there is an opportunity to learn a bit more about the love of Christ, or about the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We look for strength to face a staggering health diagnosis, or the struggles of our college-age children or the give-and-take of a marriage relationship. Where do you think it comes from? I ve seen evidence day after day of how people of faith grapple with those situations, and how their daily prayer, or their participation in a Bible study or small faith group lifts and buoys them and helps them discern the movement of the Spirit in their lives. And what a benefit it is to the larger parish family when the members are that sturdy in their faith. We need to enhance the programs we have for our young people, and to make sure we re reaching as many as we can. But it doesn t stop with high school and our task is to continually invite input from parishioners about current teachings and trends in faith formation that will help us expand our current programming. Keeping in mind last week s theme of collaboration, it might mean that we entertain the possibility of cooperative efforts between and among parishes to accomplish this task. Continue to Valinhos where Our Lady appeared to the children following their release. That evening participate in the Stations of the Cross along the Via Sacre, site of the first Apparition.
