1 Our Lady of Peace Silver Rose to be on Display at Our Lady of Peace on Tuesday, August 21st As a way to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe and promote the pro-life cause, the Knights of Columbus Silver Rose will pass through the Erie Diocese from August Our Lady of Peace Church will serve as one the sites on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at 7:00PM where the Silver Rose will be displayed as it makes its way across the United States. There will be a Prayer Service starting at 7:00PM. The Silver Rose was actually a dedication to St. Juan Diego and his meeting with Our Lady and the Miracle of the Roses, when he went back to the governor and was told to tell him to build a church on the site. The governor was skeptical and told him to bring a sign. The Blessed Mother told him to go to the top of the mountain and pick roses that were out of season. He put the roses in his tunic and dropped it by the governor and Our Lady s image was emblazoned on his cloak and is still visible today. The Knights of Columbus not only honor Our Lady but we also reaffirm dedication to the sanctity of human life. One Life, One Rose, and it s now a pro-life emblem. We hope that when people see this, they will think and pray for the end of abortion. THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! 4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk To my Spiritual Family of Our Lady of Peace- As we get ready to begin a new school and faith formation year here at OLP, we welcome new individuals and families to our parish and school families. We continue to emphasize the role we all have in helping establish a spirit of welcome in our community which the Parish Pastoral Council reinforced with the establishment of our new Welcome Committee at OLP over the summer. As part of this effort, we are working to intentionally develop the virtue of hospitality at our Masses. I am concerned by recent events at Masses that have led people to question our spirit of welcome at OLP. I want to make it clear that we, at OLP, welcome all people to our spiritual family. It is our desire that all who enter our doors have a feeling of belonging; no matter what race, gender, ethnic background, political party or sexual identity, we love everyone who joins us in worship, service, community-building, learning, and growing in our love of each other. St. Paul reminds us to be loving to each other in his letter to the Colossians, and over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection (Col 3:14). In growing as a community of love, we seek to help each other to increase our love of God. In Jesus Christ we see the ultimate revelation of God s love and example of how to love God and our neighbor. Jesus came to literally teach and show the world how to love. We recognize in our baptismal call as a church, that we are now a part of the mission of Christ to continue to be the manifestation of God s love in the world and to show the world how to love each other. I believe that everyone would whole-heartedly agree with all that I have said so far. Challenges arise when we recognize that part of that mission of Christ to teach the world how to love God and our neighbor requires him to reveal what mature, healthy love is (and by necessity what mature healthy love is not). Jesus had to reinforce that he came not to abolish the law (the Old Testament) but to fulfill it. Jesus reinforced that there were parameters for loving God as reflected in his statement if you love me, you will keep my commandments (John 14:15). In the commandments and tradition of the church, we believe that Jesus continues to guide us how to best love God and each other. When it comes to same sex attractions, the church is rooted in the long standing tradition that we are called to not act on them. However, with ongoing psychological and medical research and study, we now know this is a very complex issue. I believe that is why Pope Francis is inviting us to dialogue about how we pastorally respond to this issue and avoid condemnation; that is why I would like our parish to have an open gathering in the fall to facilitate a conversation about this topic as well as other gender issues and how we as a Catholic community can respond to these topics in a loving way that keeps in mind our Catholic tradition. Other notes from the pastor **Thank you to everyone who donated to the OLP Parish and School funds for Erie Gives! **Take Me to Worship The Unified Erie s Religiosity Committee has again initiated a county-wide publicity campaign called Take Me to Worship. The concept behind this initiative is that data shows that those who participate in religious activities for at least one hour per week are less likely to be involved in violence, abuse drugs or alcohol, commit suicide, and experience depression. So Take Me to Worship encourages regular, weekly participation in organized religious institutions. The theme is from a child s perspective- asking their parents to take them to worship so as to give them a better chance to avoid these evils that are plaguing our society. Obviously, this is not a new concept to us Catholics but it is a great opportunity to join with other religious communities to promote what is something central to all of us and to reinforce the serious responsibility that our parents have in getting their children to Mass because it makes a big impact on their the human formation of their children. Please take a car decal to promote this important initiative (at the office or doors of the church) and also consider encouraging someone in your family, a friend or your neighbor to take their children to worship. **The Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report on Children Sexual Abuse from the District Attorney was released last week. I addressed this report back in June and repeat what I said then I believe this is the lowest point of this whole process, with much media coverage and details of abuses from the past. It is hard but we will persevere. Let s pray for the grace to absorb this news with dignity and grace and continue to pray for healing and strength for all victims of abuse at the hands of the church. If anyone would like to talk about how this is affecting you, or you have ideas about how we can deal with this news and this issue as a parish, please call or me. I again commend you on your patience, perseverance and hope in the midst of this process and I believe God desires to bring healing and new life from this suffering and cross. Come Holy Spirit. **OLP Parish Picnic Our parish picnic is less than a month away and will take place on Saturday, September 8 th. Please note that the outdoor Mass will start at 4:30pm instead of 5pm (and confessions will be from 3:15-4:15pm). More details on the picnic can be found elsewhere in the bulletin and I will also be sending a letter to you this week with those details as well as details on the Faithful to the Finish 5K on Saturday, September 15 th. I hope everyone can save those dates and make them a priority as two of our biggest parish family gatherings of the year. **Gratitude for our first Vacation Bible School at OLP Thank you to everyone who helped make our first VBS here at OLP a great success as 54 children and another 15 teen volunteers participated! Remember that in order to be confirmed in eleventh grade students must have been in a Catholic high school OR must have attended religious education in grades 9 & 10. s were sent August 13 with calendars/schedules for the upcoming school year. Elementary (Grades K-5) - Classes begin September 16 and are from 10:30 to 12:15. There will be a Parent meeting at 10:40AM in the gym.
