1 Our Lady of Peace Welcoming Ceremony Three of Our Lady of Peace Parishioners: Cindy Ferber, Sandra Filippi, and Marjorie Fischer, have completed a year-long formation program and will be welcomed as an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph at a special Welcoming Prayer Service on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at 1:00PM. The Welcoming Prayer Service will be in the Chapel of the Community Living Center, 5031 West Ridge Road. A reception to follow. ERIE GIVES The annual Erie Gives campaign is scheduled for Tuesday, August 9th and we d like to surpass our totals from the last few years ( $11,538 and $10,455, $16,131) with higher participation especially by our parishioner-owned businesses. HITTING IT BIG It seems to be commonly accepted nowadays that everyone wants to win the lottery, hit the slots big at the casino, or be a millionaire. This attitude is akin to what the first hearers of the parable of the successful farmer would have thought: Why, of course he d want to find a way to preserve his good fortune for the future, to secure for himself a life of leisure, eating, drinking, and merriment. It s exactly the kind of life that the right ticket, hand of cards, or quiz show answer might bring us today. Being surrounded by this common wisdom makes the words of Qoheleth, the psalmist, Paul, and Jesus all that much harder to hear today. Perhaps good fortune will be ours, perhaps it will not be. But if we make that fortune or the quest for it the heart, the very center, of our lives, then we will live to regret it. In Peru, the 14 villages of Chazuta, in Moyobamba, are all located away from the city center, with the most remote only accessible by boat. The faithful in these communities do not have access to catechetical formation, and members often feel separated from the life of the universal Church. Through a grant from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, the religious congregation of the Missionaries of Jesus was able to provide faith formation, spiritual retreats, and workshops to nearly 250 people. Upon completion, participants were better equipped to help others deepen their faith and answer questions. The program also renewed their sense of commitment to their parishes and created stronger bonds within their own families. Through this program, members of the Chazuta villages felt the love and support of the universal Church. Please support programs like these and give generously in next week s collection.
