4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk They had been arguing about who was most important. We sometimes hear the phrase teach to the test used about the negative effect of standardized testing in our schools and the comparison that ensues. Something that assaults the nerves of dedicated teachers just as much as that is the question students ask, Is this on the test? Not exactly what learning is all about, is it? Could be an indication that the heart of the matter is not being grasped, and that the student is looking ahead instead to self-centered concerns about grades and comparison to other students. I ll bet Jesus felt a bit like that after learning about the disciples discussion about rank, and though it may have been tempting to do so, Jesus doesn t rebuke them. Instead he places an example of vulnerability and lack of status/power in their midst a child. He s inviting the disciples and us to receive the unexpected, the humble, unassuming people in our lives who we d perhaps not consider to be capable of living Christ s challenging teachings. It s a warmly human scene, which helped them to get the message, and know more deeply what s on the test. And if you ve ever raised children, or stood before them in a classroom, you know that the child stands for openness and an ability to ask difficult questions. On the contrary, the disciples are afraid to ask questions of Jesus, unlike the child, held back by a lack of understanding. It would seem that discussing status, rank and prestige are easier topics, and safer ones, to banter about. Now, to take the side of the disciples for a second, they have come a long way in Mark s gospel since last week s profession by Peter that Jesus was the Christ. The Transfiguration has happened (9:2-8), he has mentioned the curious phrase rising from the dead (9:9-13) and he has healed an epileptic child after the disciples couldn t (9: 14-29). They were then taken aside for a private teaching, and in frustration, Jesus has said, how much longer do I have to be with you; how much longer do I have to put up with you? They might be understandably gun shy about questioning him at this time. Is it any wonder they could puzzle what s on the test? Why do you think it takes them so long to figure out who Jesus is and what he s up to? But back to the child in their midst who are the children in our midst today those who represent vulnerability, lack of power, dependence? How are they more open than most to the message of Christ? How about us, are we missing the message? End of Life Issues Challenging and complex moral decisions come in the final months, and even in the final hours of one s life. Advances in science provide us with a wide range of possibilities for the last stage of life, and it is difficult terrain to travel. On Sunday, October 11 at St. Mark s Center from 2:30 4:30 PM, a panel discussion will be presented on end-of-life issues that will address these moral dilemmas as well as some of the legal complexities involved. Please consider attending this timely seminar. Admission is free. ERIE, PA Annulment changes The Holy Father has announced some changes in the annulment process recently. His teaching underscores that Marriage is still a life-long sacramental covenant between a man and a woman in which they collaborate in love and raise children up in the Church. An annulment is a declaration by the Church that the spiritual bond never existed because either party was unable or unwilling to fulfill that commitment. This could be in such cases where one was not open to bringing up children, or there was a rejection of fidelity or severe immaturity. The new rules allow more discretion to rest in the local Bishop and his tribunal personnel. The automatic appeal to a higher court, in our case, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, is no longer in effect. While three judge panels are still allowed, in some case other assessors with licentiates in canon law can also hear the case, and in some cases, the Bishop himself can be the sole judge. In the Diocese of Erie, the issue of a fee has never prevented a case from proceeding, and that remains the case. Watch Faith Life or Faith Magazine for a fuller explanation in the coming weeks. Concern for the salvation of souls and particularly charity and mercy toward those who feel alienated from the church led Pope Francis to issue these new norms. Know that both Father Glenn and Father David are always available to help couples through this now slightly expedited process. PARISH PICNIC In just two weeks, on Sunday, October 4, our parish picnic will take place at Rainbow Gardens beginning with the 11:00 AM Mass. There will be no 11:00 AM Mass in the church on that day. The picnic will follow the Mass as we celebrate our 60 th anniversary as a parish. We ll be joined by the priests and people of St. Jude Parish who also celebrate their 60 th, being founded by Archbishop Gannon on the same day as we were. The meat and beverages will be provided, and everyone is asked to bring some side dishes to fill out the picnic menu. Please use the ORANGE sign-up sheets located at the entrances of the church to signal your intention to attend, along with the number in your family.
