Sunday s Readings: First Reading - In a vision Isaiah is called to be a messenger for the LORD of hosts. Isaiah responds, Send me! (Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8) Psalm - In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord (Psalm 138). Second Reading - Paul reminds us of the gospel he preached through which we are saved, if we believe it (1 Corinthians 15:1-11 [3-8, 11]). Gospel - Jesus directs Simon to take his boat into deep water for a miraculous catch of fish. Simon and his partners leave all to follow Jesus (Luke 5:1-11). Holy, holy, holy! Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not always have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God was holiest, so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these three little words that we sing at every Mass serves as a reminder that answering God s call has to be grounded in awareness of God s holiness. In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of God s power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in mission, Isaiah s Here I am, send me! and the disciples leaving everything to follow Jesus. 4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH I hope everyone had a happy Groundhog Day! I understand that Phil predicts an early spring; I hope he got it right this year! We are so blessed to welcome back Fr. Matt Kujawinski as our new pastor. He will be installed as pastor by Bishop Persico on Monday, February 22 nd at a special mass at 7PM with a reception to follow in the school cafeteria. I invite everyone to join us for this special event. It s hard to believe that Lent is here already! On Ash Wednesday, we will be celebrating Mass at 7AM, 9AM, 12:10PM, and 7PM and we will have a Liturgy of the Word service with distribution of Ashes at 5:30pm. Please join us! Beginning this Friday, February 12 th we will also begin our tradition of hearing confessions at 6PM followed by Stations of the Cross at 7PM. This is one of the devotions I remember most from my childhood. I urge all parishioners, especially those with young children, to join us for this special devotion. This week kicks off our annual Catholic Services Appeal. So often I hear people ask why we as a parish don t do more to reach out to people in our community. I don t think we really understand all the wonderful work that is accomplished through the Catholic Services Appeal. In the Diocese of Erie, we are blessed to have such a large Catholic Charities that oversees work done with people with disabilities, counseling and adoption, outreach to the poor in our diocesan community, refugee ministry, promotion of family life, just to name a few! Through the Catholic Services Appeal, the Diocese is inviting the Our Lady of Peace Family to join them in all the good work they do. As you ll remember from years past, every dollar we raise over our goal will stay in our parish to help with capital improvements. I am a strong believer that our budget speaks our theology. This year our project is a prime example of this. We will be working together to improve our sound system here in Church. The most important thing we do as Catholics is celebrate the Eucharist. It is important that everyone is able to hear and actively participate in our celebration of Mass. Please prayerfully consider giving to this year s CSA Appeal and together we can be lights of hope through giving. As we prepare to enter into this Lenten journey together let us be mindful of the words of Pope Francis, Our lives are a land of thorns and weeds, but there is always space in which a good seed can grow. You have to trust in God. Let us make a real effort this Lent to look at all those parts of our lives that are leading us away from God and pray for the grace to turn back to him completely and entirely. Let us pray for each other as we enter into this holy season. Stay joyful in Jesus as Lent unfolds, Fr. 5 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 7, 2016 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Elementary (Grades K-5) - Religious Ed classes meet this February 7, Classes meet 10:30AM to 12:15PM in the school. Dismissal is from the cafeteria at 12:15PM. NO Elementary classes next Sunday, February 14, Secondary (Grades 6-10) - Religious Ed next meets Sunday, February 14, 2016, from 5:30 to 7:30PM in the school. Grade 10 retreat is February 14. Students meet at 1:30PM in the cafeteria. Grade 10 students will attend 4:30 Mass and have dinner after in the cafeteria. Retreat students will be dismissed at 7:30PM from the gym. He will share his talent and love of music with a short music recital after the 5:00 Mass on February 13. Excerpt taken from Valley Magazine December/January 2015: Luke Martinucci, older brother, musician and student at the Lewis School for Gifted Learning Potential, has always been a step or two ahead of the pack. At age 2, he was able to recite the alphabet, in regular order or reverse, and at age 3, he was beginning to read. Luke s proudest moment occurred when he learned to play the first movement of Chopin s Funeral March. Piano is the biggest thing I m doing right now, he states. In addition to his daily piano practice, he has begun taking violin lessons and composing his own music. A classical music enthusiast, Luke studies and listens to the rhythms and patterns of other musicians work to gain inspiration and guidance for his own pieces.
