David Renne, along with all the priests, gather this week for their annual EMMAUS Convocation, at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA, please continue to keep them in your prayers throughout the week using the prayer below: THE EMMAUS PRAYER Lord Jesus. Hear our prayer for the spiritual renewal of priests. We praise you for giving their ministry to the Church. In these days, renew them with the gifts of your Spirit. You once opened the Scriptures to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Now renew your ordained ministers with the truth and power of your Word. In Eucharist, you gave the Emmaus disciples renewed life and hope. Nourish priests with your own Body and Blood. Help them to imitate in their lives the death and resurrection they celebrate at your altar. Give priests enthusiasm for the Gospel, zeal for the salvation of all, courage in leadership, humility in service, fellowship with one another and with all their brothers and sisters in You. For you love them, Lord Jesus, and we love and pray for them in Your Name.
4 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk ORDINARY TIME After six weeks of Lent, eight of Eastertime, and the last two special Sundays here we are back with Mark s gospel picking up in chapter 4 and ready to continue reading. With the exception of an interlude from John s gospel for five weeks later this summer, Mark will set the pace for us until Advent. We also pick up on the Second Letter to the Corinthians, while the first readings from the Old Testament will come from a smattering of sources, generally selected because they contain an image or theme from the gospel passage. We call all this Ordinary Time when we re given the opportunity to grow in our faith, (thus green vestments a sign of growth) fresh from the power of the resurrection and getting a weekly booster shot from Mark s good news. And that connects quite easily with the images of growth that come from first century agriculture the use of something that grows in the earth: wheat, a bush, the cedar. Our first urge after hearing these stories is to find a moral and turn Ezechiel and Jesus into Aesop. Now they, Jesus and Ezechiel, were very much concerned with how to behave, with how people treat one another but their stories were not intended to be clear-cut lessons in morality. They are both attempting to share something they see in the physical world. Look at the Ezechiel story, where he sees something about Israel and about God. He could have said simply, God can do whatever God wants and God is free to raise up the outcast and the lowly while bringing the big and mighty to ruin. Other prophets had said just that. But Ezechiel had in mind something more. What? Why does the story work so well and remain vivid after centuries? What does it say to the world, to the Church, to me and you? Ask identical questions of the two stories Jesus tells, and pay special attention to the two lines with which he introduces the second story. Mark s last line reveals his dissatisfaction with the two stories and that he couldn t believe that Jesus would simply let it go at that. But sometimes the parables go unexplained, and that might just reveal Jesus wanted us to let them percolate in our hearts and minds and come to their truth in God s own perfect time. What teaching of Jesus have you let simmer for a while and then come to an Aha! moment yourself? Msgr. Ernest Daley May 19, 1955 to May 19, Years of Priestly Ministry ERIE, PA EMMAUS CONVOCATION This week Father David and I will be in Latrobe for the annual Emmaus gathering of priests and deacons with Bishop Persico. Somebody ppllleeeeaaassse watch Father Caz while we re away. Check the bulletin for daily Mass and Communion Services. I m leaving from Latrobe on Friday for North Carolina for ten days. See you at the end of the month! CHURCH CARPETING In a couple weeks, the pews and carpeting will be removed and new carpeting installed. It will be a long process, beginning in early July with completion set for August 16. While the pews are out, the Properties Committee recommended we work on cleaning the ceiling, replacing tiles where necessary and checking our light fixtures. There was a suggestion made that the work might go faster if we removed all the pews and vacate the church, using the gymnasium for weekend services. However, there are a couple weddings already scheduled for the church, and the idea of metal chairs getting set up weekly in the gym with no air conditioning, though a vivid reminder of our past, wasn t a good idea. That means the seating on weekends will be different, but just for a couple weeks. Thank You! Thank You! For your generous support of OLP Athletics You ask: How the OLP Sports Lottery The OLP Athletic Board and OLP Sports Teams would like to thank all those in our OLP Parish Community who supported our first OLP Sports Lottery. Your overwhelming support was greatly appreciated! If you would like to send Father a card, send it to: Msgr. Ernest Daley St. Mary s at Asbury Ridge 4855 West Ridge Rd Erie, PA 16506
5 THE ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 14, 2015 Casserole Club We are taught, Remember the stranger, for you were strangers in the Land of Egypt. During Passover, let us never forget the festival s theme of freedom. May we be mindful of those who are enslaved by poverty and hunger, by illness or by prejudice, by homelessness and by hopelessness. May the festival inspire us to yet another act of tzedakah, to help the needy of our larger community, whenever in the world they may be. Let our voices and our deeds struggle for the freedom of all humanity. Our Passover Haggadah tells us that we are not truly free until all men and women live at liberty and in peace. May we rejoice in our own freedom by committing ourselves to the liberty of others. Rabbi Barry H. Block The June casseroles can be delivered to the Our Lady of Peace Church meeting room (basement) on Saturday, June 20th, between 3:30 and 4:30PM. If you need a casserole to be picked up, or if the date and time for collection is not convenient, or if you have any questions about Maria House Project, contact Skip and Dottie Glover, , scottiedip@yahoo.com. Casseroles should be pre-cooked, frozen in a disposable container with reheating instructions attached. Names or addresses should not be included. June 8, 2015 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On June 29th, the Church will celebrate the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, the two Apostles who shed their blood for Christ in Rome. As every year, the Peter s Pence Collection will be taken throughout the Church on or near that Solemnity. The collection will be taken in our parishes this year on the weekend of June 27th and 28th. The Peter s Pence Collection supports the charitable works of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, the successor of St. Peter, as he responds to some of the most urgent needs of people throughout the world, including relief to victims of natural disasters such as the earthquake in Nepal, floods, typhoons and drought. Peter s Pence also helps our Holy Father support seminaries and religious houses, orphanages, AIDS treatment centers, and other medical facilities in developing nations, as well as many other charitable works. From the beginning the Church has made it a priority to help the most needy of our brothers and sisters in the human family. Your prayers and contributions will allow this important work to continue. Please be as generous as you can. Through our support of the Peter s Pence Collection, all of us here in the Diocese of Erie are also helping to strengthen the ties that bind us together as the Family of God. Please know of my gratitude for your generosity. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Lawrence T. Persico The Most Reverend Lawrence T.
