Over the next five weeks, our focus at First Methodist is going to be the importance of growing in our walk with Christ. The reason this is important is that there is a dynamic in our Christian lives that we often are unaware of: if we are not moving forward in Christ, then we are naturally going backward. In the Christian life there is no such thing as standing still. We are either progressing or regressing. My goal for each one of us in 2019 is that we would grow in our walk with Jesus. I hope that is your goal as well. The most important initial step in achieving any goal is simply to form a plan. Many of us have learned in other areas of our lives that if we do not have a plan to achieve some goal, then that goal is really just a wish. So as we move into the last quarter of 2018, we re going to focus as a church on forming a plan to grow spiritually. How do we form a plan? One of the great gifts of being a Christian in the Methodist tradition is that we have an outline for spiritual growth built into the vows that we take when we join the church. When we join, we vow to grow in our faith by practicing prayer, presence, giving, serving, and witnessing. So over the next five weeks, we re going to be looking at each of those practices in turn. We re going to hear testimonies from fellow First Methodist members about how each practice has shaped their faith. And then on Sunday, October 28, we will have an opportunity to give to God our own personal Plan for Spiritual Growth. You will receive two blank copies of these cards in the mail over the coming week. There will also be cards available in the and the Sanctuary. Here s what I m inviting you to do: Fill out both copies of your plan and bring one copy with you on Sunday, October 28 to give to God during a special dedication time. Keep the other copy of your plan at home with you to remind you of the plan you made. In mid-2019 we will mail a copy of your plan back to you as a reminder of the commitment you made for yourself so that you can be encouraged to continue to grow in Christ. I m looking forward to growing with you this year as we progress in our walk with Christ through our prayer, our presence, our giving, our service, and our witness! In Christ, Clint

2 Kids WOW Kids stands for Worship on Wednesdays (for kids)! Many have been asking about this new group for kids on Wednesdays, and what they are doing. During the Wednesday Night Fellowship program time, kids in kindergarten - 4th grade are gathering in the Beach Room (102) for a devotion and prayer time, as well as a fun program led by an adult from the church. It has been a great time for the kids (and adults!) to get to work together and get to know one another better. Programs have included: game night of WOW vs. LAMP kids, science night learning all about light, night of singing and dancing to praise songs, minute-to-win-it night, random acts of kindness, and Bible trivia. Special thanks to all the volunteers who have helped (and will help!) make Wednesdays a special time for these kids!

3 Trunk or Treat!! Wednesday, October 31, from 6-8 pm Please consider spending Halloween with us this year! We always have a wonderful turnout from the community and it s a great opportunity for our church to really be a presence in Tallassee. It s also a fun night to spend with fellow church members, enjoying their company and the creativity of their trunks and decorations. My goal for this year is to have 30 cars sign up to participate. We will be giving out a prize to the best decorated trunk (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place), and dinner will be provided for volunteers. If you would like to host and decorate a trunk (and we need you to!!), sign up on the sheet in the or contact me to have your name added to the list. If you cannot join us, please consider donating candy, or money to buy candy. We go through MANY, many bags that night, so anything you contribute will be a huge help! Thanks! Following the meal, there are programs available for all ages: Bible study or dulcimer practice for adults, Bible study for youth, Devotions and fun activities for LAMP (5th & 6th grade), WOW Kids for those in pre-k through 4th grade, and a nursery for our youngest children and babies. Meal served: 6:00 to 6:30 pm Cost: Adults - $6.00 Children (12 and under) - $3.50 Family Maximum - $18.00 Programs: 6:30 to 7:15 pm October 3 October 10 Meal: pork tenderloin, black-eyed peas, squash casserole, cornbread, dessert Youth Fundraiser! Alternate: hot dog, chips, dessert Please make your reservation each week by completing the bulletin insert or card in the attendance folder, or by calling the church office no later than 3:00 pm on Tuesday. October 17 Meal: hamburger steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll, dessert Alternate: grilled cheese, chips, dessert October 24 Meal: poppy seed chicken over rice, garden salad, roll, dessert Alternate: chicken nuggets, fries, dessert Note: there will be NO WNF on October 31 - please join us for Trunk or Treat instead!

4 Operation Christmas Child 2 nd Annual Packing Party October is Clergy Appreciation Month! Take a few minutes this month and find a special way to let Clint and his family know how thankful you are for them and everything they do for our church! And then let us remember to continue to show our appreciation the whole year through! BLOOD DRIVE October 14 9 am - 12:30 pm in the front parking lot Believe it or not, Christmas is right around the corner! That means it is time for the kids at FUMC to have their second annual shoebox packing party! This fun and rewarding party will take place on Sunday, November 11 th at 5:00pm. To make this party a success, we need of your help! We will be collecting the following items until the day of the party: Monetary donations (Each box costs $9 to ship!) Non-liquid Hygiene items (toothbrushes, washcloths, soap, combs, hairbrushes) School supplies: pencils, pencil sharpeners, paper, notebooks, erasers, crayons, coloring books Small stuffed animals and baby dolls Accessories: sunglasses, hair bows, barrettes, play jewelry, etc.) Hats, gloves, scarves, t-shirts, underwear Games (travel-size games, puzzles, marbles, Jacks set) Matchbox cars and outdoor toys (yo-yos, jump ropes, small balls) Small tool sets and mini sewing kits (LOTS NEEDED!) Small bags with a drawstring or handles (LOTS NEEDED!) No war related items or breakable items are permitted. *OUR GOAL IS TO PACK 100 BOXES THIS YEAR! Donation bins can be found in the fellowship hall and outside the sanctuary. If you make a monetary donation, please indicate it is for Operation Christmas Child. 5 MEET OUR STAFF: Jordan Cunningham Encounter Worship Leader and Sexton Jordan Cunningham was born to Donna and Jerry Cunningham in Montgomery in He began working at First United Methodist Church in February 2013 as the Worship Leader for the newly minted Encounter service. Later, when the custodian job became open, he was hired for that job too, and his title changed to Worship Leader and Sexton. In addition to his duties at the church, he enjoys playing golf with his dad. He s also very interested in movies, but his heart, whether in or out of church, is music. His other passion is sound and light engineering. He frequently works at the high school and at Mount Vernon Theatre, sometimes as a volunteer and occasionally getting paid. He is a Tallassee fixture anytime there is a performance or show, whether it is a charity even or a sold out show. My week begins and ends with worship at this church. Sunday afternoon is sort of my Saturday, because I have had my worship for the week. I love this congregation because it s the first congregation that focused on love, and not on avoiding damnation. I m part of what some might call the geek culture. I love Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and James Bond. Jordan says his dream job would be to be in charge, full-time, of sound and light engineering for a big church. Jordan and Brother Clint work closely on the Encounter service to make sure it is a meaningful time of worship and learning. Jordan also works as Sexton, ensuring that the church is clean and all rooms are set up for the next event. His job descriptions are much too long to include, but it s clear that few of us could match his schedule for a whole week. Keep main church building, office building, and grounds, including parking lots and play areas, neat and clean at all times. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation. Perform task list in a timely manner. Assist in the set-up of tables, chairs and other items for church activities. Be available for wedding and special-event clean up (for additional pay). Keep an inventory of supplies and equipment on hand and request needed replacements from the Church Administrator far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not delay the upkeep of the building. The church will provide supplies and equipment sufficient for these tasks; the custodian must take care to maintain the provided equipment in good working order throughout its serviceable life. Hopefully these articles will help you to get to know our staff better and give you a better sense of all they do for FUMC!
