3 There's an app for that! These days, there s a smartphone app for just about everything. But what about spiritual concerns? Where can you turn? Depressed? Try the joy app. Read Isaiah 51:11. Tired? Try the renewal app. Read Isaiah 40: Unse led? Try the peace app. Read Philippians 4:7. Unloved? Try the love app. Read Romans 8: Worried? Try the refuge app. Read Psalm 46:1. Fearful? Try the power app. Read 2 Timothy 1:7. Guilty? Try the forgiveness app. Read Colossians 1: Praying? Try the prayer app. Read 1 John 5: The Scriptures are God s storehouse of meaningful applica ons for what we face every day. Think of the Bible as the itunes Store of spiritual apps. Best of all, everything s free! Wri en by Timothy Merrill From Pastor s Desk God s Beloved People, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING I Thess 5:16 We need to give a great big round of applause to our Church Council. They are a remarkable group with wonderful ministry gi s that have given and given and given of their me, talents, and treasure. As we journey into this New Year together let us pray without ceasing as 1 Thessalonians 5:16 18 says, Rejoice always; pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. We are Chris ans, we all pray, right? Everybody who is a Chris an prac ces the reflec ve medita on of the prayerful life, correct? According to Jesus, by far the most important thing about praying is to keep at it. The images he uses to explain this are rather comical, as though he thought it was rather comic to have to explain prayer to Jews at all. He says God is like a friend you go borrow bread from at midnight. The friend tells you in effect to drop dead, but you go on knocking anyway un l he finally gives you what you want so he can go back to bed again. (Luke 11:5 8) God wants us to beat a path to his door because un l we do, this may be the only way to of ge ng to and understanding our own door. To ask, knock, and seek is a means of understanding self, life, and mission. I call on each of us to pray for our congrega on, council leadership, God s mission through ELC and our staff. Through our praying we are encouraged, heartened, supported, held, and have our direc on clarified in God s way, forward. According to Jesus, this is the most important thing we can do for each other. So keep at it! Pray without ceasing! Allow me to repeat this; as we journey into this New Year together let us pray without ceasing...keep at it. As we beat a path to God s door, we do this because it is the only way of ge ng to and understanding our own door. Shalom Pastor Daugs Pastor Daugs Office Hours: 9AM Noon, Tue. Thurs. 5 Swaanie Schwarzlander What an exci ng and special me for our new members, Swaantje (Swaanie) Schwarzlander and her family! In August, the Schwarzlander s traveled to Giekau in northern Germany for Swaanie s bap sm on Sunday, August 31, 2014! See below what was shared by the Schwarzlander s about this fantas c trip. Thank you, Mark, Majiijka, and Swannie, for including us in this special event! The church in Giekau and Swaanie in front of the altar sensing that this service is all about her. The church in Giekau is named a er the apostle and evangelist Johannes (John). It is one of the churches founded by Graf Adolf IV of Schaumburg a er his victory over the Danes at Bornhöved in Construc on is believed to have been completed by 1240, and the church was first men oned in a register in The old tower was replaced in with the current one, which is 105 feet tall. It houses 2 bells, a large one cast in 1616 in the Northern Sea port town of Husum. The smaller bell is a replacement for an older one and was cast in There is also an hour bell, which was made from a bomb shell dropped nearby the church at the end of WWII. The wooden gothic altar is da ng back to the year The bap smal stand dates from The main reason, why we chose this church and its congrega on (serving a popula on of about 3,000 in 18 surrounding villages) is that it is the congrega on of Mark s mother and her ancestors. Mark s grandma was bap zed and married in this church and she is res ng in the graveyard right behind the church, as are his great grandparents. His mom was bap zed and married in this church, as was his sister. So in many regards that has been for genera ons the family church. Pastor Günther Suckow was excited about the idea of the bap sm, and it took place on Sunday, August 31, Swaanies bap sm verse is: Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with ac ons and in truth. 1 John 3:18 (NIV) The bap sm family with godfather and godmother in front of the altar. Every baptized child is honored with a paper dove hanging on top of the baptismal stand. The Easter Monday in the year following the baptism, the doves are 5 handed to the children. 14 Emmanuel Lutheran Preschool News! The firefighters came to school to teach the children about fire safety. Father and son, Joe and Sco Williams were the firemen who visited. Fireman Sco told us coming to talk at schools is his favorite thing to do and he is great with the children. One li le boy started the day in tears feeling scared just thinking about fires, and ended the day being the first to volunteer to wear the fire fighter's gear. It's great to see those posi ve transi ons. In addi on to safety, the four year old classes learned about colors and people at work. The drama c play area was converted to a carpenters shop and a beauty shop. The children have most enjoyed hammering tees into Styrofoam blocks. Their field trip was to the Moscow Food Co op where they learned about a variety of jobs including bakers, dish washers, baristas, shelf stockers, meat cu ers, office workers, cashiers and produce workers. The three year old classes enjoyed orange day and learning about apples. They read apple books, did apple prin ng and went on a field trip to the WSU apple orchards. While visi ng the orchards they saw the huge refrigerated building, heard about what helps apples grow, and picked apples to bring home. All the children rehearsed songs for Preschool Sunday and the ones who were able to came to church to sing. Some families stayed for the fun pumpkin carving a er the service. The congrega on always offers a warm welcome to the preschool families. We avoid the nega ve aspects of Halloween, but s ll have some fun with the season. The children learn about pumpkins and bats and they enjoy wearing costumes to school the end of October. Happy Fall, Terri & Marnie 14 14

17 Pastor s Discre onary Fund The Pastor s Discre onary Fund is used by the Pastor to assist individuals and families that are in need. Most o en it is used to assist people who stop by the church office and request assistance for basic needs. Community organiza ons may also refer to Pastor, persons who need assistance. Pastor inves gates each case by checking in with the Sheriff s Office and or Latah County Social Services both of which share a common data base that can spot repea ng requests and persons to keep an eye on. These requests to the Pastor s Discre onary fund may be: They are homeless and need a place to stay for a night or two. The fund can provide temporary hotel housing for up to 3 nights while other arrangements are being made. Pastor will assist these people in connec ng with local resources. Most people may receive housing assistance up to 2 mes per Treasurer s Report year, however circumstances and situa ons may direct more assistance especially when there are children involved. They may need assistance with u li es that are about to be denied. Pastor calls the u lity provider and helps to set up a payment plan that incudes an ini al payment from the Discre onary Fund. They are traveling through town and need gasoline or vehicle repairs so they can con nue to their des na on. Their personal resources are depleted. Pastor assists them in purchasing fuel or finding a mechanic who can repair their vehicle for a reasonable rate. People need to see a doctor or need medicine. Pastor uses the Moscow Clinic to provide these services. They may need a prescrip on filled and this is done through Rosauers Pharmacy. People may need food. They are connected with our local food bank and/or food is given from our ELC kitchen surplus or is purchased by Pastor. Preschool families some mes need assistance with, rent, u li es, food, medicine, clothing or tui on. ELC has the gracious ministry of loaves and fishes, assis ng people with their most basic needs. This is a very hands on ministry through our Pastor. The Pastor s Discre onary Fund is in need of your financial support. Could your support for the Pastor s Discre onary Fund be above and beyond your usual gracious giving? If you are able to, please give a separate offering ear marked for the Pastor s Discre onary Fund. (Our Church Treasurer and our Pastor administrate the Pastor s Discre onary Fund.)
