1 Preceding Sunday, January 31, 2016 Issue #: Emmanuel Lutheran Church 1036 W A Street, Moscow, ID Phone: Fax: emmanuelmoscowid@gmail.com - Church Office Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 6 AM - 2:30 PM (unless otherwise noted.) MQM Winner! Congratulations Lis Shepard! The Membership Question of the Month (aka MQM) is a fun and painless way to get helpful information (on a wide variety of topics) to the Church Office. Over the life of this program, the staff in the church office have gathered the congregations thoughts, ideas, and feedback on things such as: new church publication formats, participation in church programs like completion of Time and Talent Surveys, what format of worship bulletins are preferred, it has been a great asset in gathering current contact information such as full names, phone numbers, addresses, etc. How does it work? Every month or so there is a new MQM printed on the Welcome! Card inserted in your worship bulletin. All who supply a completed card and a reliable MQM answer is entered into a drawing. The winner of the random drawing receives recognition in all our church publications and a prize! The drawing takes place when we move on to a new question (about every 4-6 weeks). Your participation in this program is sincerely appreciated, as it gives the church office staff valuable information to help us do our job better for you. January s Membership Question of the Month involved sharing your opinion on the current format of Emmanuel s newsletter. Feedback on this topic is very crucial in how we intend to continue forward with this publication. Thank you and congratulations to Lis Shepard for participating in our MQM program! Your prize can be picked up in the Church Office! We value and appreciate your input!
2 Sunday s Scripture Segments Scripture readings for this Sunday, January 31, 2016, 4 th Sunday after Epiphany, are: Jeremiah 1:4-10 God calls Jeremiah to be a prophet and consecrates him in the womb. Jeremiah s task is to preach God s word in the midst of the difficult political realities of his time, before the Babylonian exile. He is to make God known not only to Judah, but also to the nations. Sunday Morning Ed Opps Join on Sunday mornings for: Good News of Luke 8:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall with rotating leaders: Pastor Daugs - Jack Kelly - Kurt Queller January 31: The Parables Good News of Death February 7: Luke s Strong Message Good News to the Poor February 14: Apocalyptic Good News of End Times February 21: Connection to Good News of Acts 2016 is the year of Luke s Gospel. By next Thanksgiving, 2016, we will have read through most of Luke s Gospel at Sunday morning worship. Join us for this compelling overview of Luke s Gospel. It will most definitely bring clarity to behind the scenes information and messages Luke writes into his Gospel. Beautifully written with many sub-themes; join us in Biblical Discovery Pastor Daugs 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 Christians in Corinth prided themselves on their spiritual gifts. Paul reminds them that God gives us many gifts through the Holy Spirit, but the purpose behind all of them is love, the kind of love that God showed us in Jesus Christ. Luke 4:21-30 People in Jesus hometown are initially pleased when he says that God will free the oppressed. Their pleasure turns to rage when he reminds them that God s prophetic mission typically pushes beyond human boundaries so that mercy and healing are extended to those regarded as outsiders. Sermon Title: The Greatest of These is Love Pastor Dave Daugs and ELC Youth J.A.M. for children through age 12. Following the Children s Sermon, J.A.M. leaders will escort the kiddos down to the Fellowship Hall for crafts, games, songs, and a snack. Children will return to the Sanctuary just prior to Holy Communion. Prayer Pieces Book Study Sunday mornings at 8:30 in The Gallery. We will be reading several of the stories from The Book of God by Walter Wangerin, Jr. during Advent and into the New Year. This is the Bible as you have never read it before - told with passion and depth. We are beginning with the story of Mary. Please come join us whether you "knit or not." It is available through Amazon - paperback for $15.70 or on Kindle for $5.99. Contact Carol Nelson with questions at cjnelson@lcsc.edu

6 Did you know? Emmanuel purchases complimentary subscriptions of some fantastic monthly devotionals just for YOU! That s right! Every quarter the church purchases Portals of Prayer by Concordia Publishing House, and Christ In Our Home by Augsburg Fortress. These booklets are filled with daily devotions which feature a Bible reading, meditation, and prayer, in an easy-to-read format. Each devotion is great for personal study and reflection, private family worship, and can be used to open meetings or launch Bible studies. These devotions encourage readers to live out their faith daily. Both publications come in a handy pocket size or a large print format. Copies can be found in the publication rack upstairs in the narthex, and there are copies in the Church Office as well. What are you wai ng for?
7 The Simply Giving Program Through Simply Giving, your offering is made through a pre-authorized withdrawal from your bank account. You determine the frequency of your automatic donation weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly the option is yours. Benefits Simply Giving is a reliable, safe way to move your stewardship plan into action. It allows you to share your donations through planned giving and activates your generosity into ongoing stewardship. Because your donation is given consistently, you won t need to play catch-up at year-end or worry about forgotten checkbooks or missed Sunday offerings. But you re not the only one that benefits. Our congregation benefits from steady, more predictable revenues throughout the year, more efficient bookkeeping, and greater confidence in meeting our financial commitments. Who do I call with questions? Give the Church Office a call at We will direct you to our Financial Secretary to answer any specific questions you may have. Your Thrivent Financial representative may also be able to answer your questions. How do I cancel or change my authorization? Contact the Church Office at How do I participate? 9 What would like to do? Here s an idea! Make a positive impact on the Sunday experience of all who enter here! In Scripture, many great encounters between people and God happen around food. Abraham and Sarah prepare a meal for three guests who turn out to be angels (Genesis 18). God instructs the Hebrew slaves to eat a special meal together before their delivery from Egypt (Exodus 12); every year since, Jews have celebrated the Passover feast. Elijah is strengthened with food served by an angel (1 Kings 19). Jesus shares meals not only with religious leaders but with sinners (e.g., Matthew 9). Jesus Last Supper with his disciples before his death has become one of the church s sacraments and a foretaste of the heavenly banquet to come. When Christian families eat together, it s a holy time in God s presence, just as when the church shares Holy Communion a true fellowship dinner! Each Emmanuel family helps out with Sunday Morning Fellowship Privileges on a rotating basis once every few months. A letter with the schedule and instructions is sent to each family as well as a reminder postcard sent a few days before your scheduled Sunday. If you have not been asked to serve yet, or if you had previously asked to be removed from the rotation but would like to again serve, please let us know. Great Possibilities 'Happily for us, the fundamental Christian message concerns not what we ought to do but what God has done and what God is willing to do. In fellowship with him and with others who are likewise trying to be like him, we can be lifted up above our native possibilities.' - Hugh Martin There are many ways to be involved in the ministries at Emmanuel. Just let us know what you hold interest in, what your gifts are, what you like to do! Your help is always needed and appreciated! Call us!
