2 Sunday s Scripture Segments Scripture readings for this Sunday, February 14, 2016, First Sunday in Lent, are: Deuteronomy 26:1-11 The annual harvest festival, called the feast of Weeks, provides the setting for this reading. This festival celebrates the first fruits of the produce of the land offered back to God in thanks. In this text, worshipers announce God s gracious acts on behalf of Israel. Sunday Morning Ed Opps Join on Sunday mornings for: Good News of Luke 8:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall with rotating leaders: Pastor Daugs - Jack Kelly - Kurt Queller February 14: February 21: Apocalyptic Good News of End Times Connection to Good News of Acts 2016 is the year of Luke s Gospel. By next Thanksgiving, 2016, we will have read through most of Luke s Gospel at Sunday morning worship. Join us for this compelling overview of Luke s Gospel. It will most definitely bring clarity to behind the scenes information and messages Luke writes into his Gospel. Beautifully written with many sub-themes; join us in Biblical Discovery Pastor Daugs Romans 10:8b-13 Paul reminds the Christians at Rome of the foundation of their creed, the confession of faith in the risen Christ as Lord. Luke 4:1-13 After being filled with the Holy Spirit at his baptism, Jesus is led in the wilderness. Through his responses to the temptations of the devil he defines what it means to be called the Son of God. Sermon Title: For where your treasure is there your heart shall be. Matthew 6:21 Pastor Dave Daugs J.A.M. for children through age 12. Following the Children s Sermon, J.A.M. leaders will escort the kiddos down to the Fellowship Hall for crafts, games, songs, and a snack. Children will return to the Sanctuary just prior to Holy Communion. Prayer Pieces Book Study Sunday mornings at 8:30 in The Gallery. We will be reading several of the stories from The Book of God by Walter Wangerin, Jr. during Advent and into the New Year. This is the Bible as you have never read it before - told with passion and depth. We are beginning with the story of Mary. Please come join us whether you "knit or not." It is available through Amazon - paperback for $15.70 or on Kindle for $5.99. Contact Carol Nelson with questions at cjnelson@lcsc.edu

3 Mid-Week Lenten Services Every Wednesday Beginning February 17 through March 16. Join us for the Wednesdays of Lent (2/17, 2/24, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16) led by Pastor Daugs, downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. Soup Supper - 5:30 6:15 PM Lenten Devotions - 6:15 7:00 PM Read on to learn more about our Lenten Evening Theme: Confronting Death: A Christian Approach to the End of Life with Walter Wangerin, Jr. You and I sooner or later are going to experience what comes to all people: we are going to experience dying. But there is a difference between us and the would the world looks away from that fact and tries to hide it as much as possible but we as faithful people have the power and ability to look death straight in the eye and understand it. Drawing from his own recent experience with cancer, Wagerin explores: Discovering serious illness Grieving before death Caring for the one who is not sick How do we handle the pain? Confronting the dying itself During our Lenten Evenings we will Journey through Grief with Stephen Ministries Pastor, clinical psychologist, author, and founder of Stephen Ministries, Rev. Kenneth C. Haugk, Ph.D., has devoted his life to caring for others and equipping others to care. In 2002, his work took on deeper significance when his wife, Joan, died of ovarian cancer. In Journeying through Grief, he shares from the heart, drawing from his personal and professional experience and from the insights of many others. Journeying through Grief Explains the grief process and encourages the bereaved to grieve in healthy ways. Helps people to understand that the craziness they might be experiencing during grief is normal Describes the varied and intense feelings that typically surface during grief and suggests healing ways to deal with and express those feelings. Looks at grief from a biblical perspective, gently helping grieving people work through any faith struggles they might be encountering. Provides hope that even when they might not see it or feel it God is present, working from the inside out to heal their broken heart. Lets grieving people know that someone is thinking about them, empathizes with their pain, prays for them, and really does care. Each of the four books is 44 pages long with short, easy-to-read chapters written in a caring, friendly style. The pages are interspersed with Bible passages, poems, and quotes about grief. Most often it is used to assist people who stop by the church office and request assistance for basic needs. Community organizations may also refer to Pastor, persons who need assistance. Pastor investigates each case by checking in with the Sheriff s Office and or Latah County Social Services both of which share a common data base that can spot repeating requests and persons to keep an eye on. These requests to the Pastor s Discretionary fund may be: They are homeless and need a place to stay for a night or two. The fund can provide temporary hotel housing for up to 3 nights while other arrangements are being made. Pastor will assist these people in connecting with local resources. Most people may receive housing assistance up to 2 times per year, however circumstances and situations may direct more assistance especially when there are children involved. They may need assistance with utilities that are about to be denied. Pastor calls the utility provider and helps to set up a payment plan that incudes an initial payment from the Discretionary Fund. They are traveling through town and need gasoline or vehicle repairs so they can continue to their destination. Their personal resources are depleted. Pastor assists them in purchasing fuel or finding a mechanic who can repair their vehicle for a reasonable rate. People need to see a doctor or need medicine. Pastor uses the Moscow Clinic to provide these services. They may need a prescription filled and this is done through Rosauers Pharmacy. People may need food. They are connected with our local food bank and/or food is given from our ELC kitchen surplus or is purchased by Pastor. Preschool families sometimes need assistance with, rent, utilities, food, medicine, clothing or tuition. ELC has the gracious ministry of loaves and fishes, assisting people with their most basic needs. This is a very hands on ministry through our Pastor. The Pastor s Discretionary Fund is in need of your financial support. Could your support for the Pastor s Discretionary Fund be above and beyond your usual gracious giving? If you are able to, please give a separate offering ear marked for the Pastor s Discretionary Fund. (Our Church Treasurer and our Pastor administrate the Pastor s Discretionary Fund.)

7 January 2016 Financial Report With a 2016 budget of $363,600, that includes the roof loan, income needs to average about $30,300 per month to meet budget. Income from the general fund in January totaled $25,173 and expenses were $27,745. As a result, the operating loss for January and year-to-date totaled $2,572. Currently, we have raised $32, worth of roof! You can buy a square of shingles for $1,000. (or a 1/2 square for $500, a 1/4 square for $250) For information or to contribute, please contact: Jon Kimberling or Bob Ritter The balance on the roof replacement loan today is $59,237 and our monthly payment is $987. Since the roof loan was originated in July, the congregation has contributed $5,650 that was applied to pay down the loan balance. In the coming days we will be preparing for the February congregation meeting wherein you will hear the latest information on the status of our finances and vote to ratify the budget approved at the annual meeting. Thanks to everyone for their continued generosity. 8 The Luth Youth started off the new year sledding on the Emmanuel playground hills. We did this on the last day of winter break. We also spent time discussing our plans for holding a food drive in Feb, and the importance of helping out others in our community. There were 12 kids in attendance. The second Luth Youth event was held on a Friday morning, no school day. I introduced the kids to random acts of kindness, and sent them home with a Top Secret envelope containing acts of kindness to carry out with family or friends at school. The kids were excited to complete their secret missions. There were 16 in attendance. The Mighty Youth had two play days throughout the month. The first one was at Emmanuel, with 8 kids participating. A few of the parents stayed and visited with each other while I played with the kids. For the second play day, we met at Bonkerz indoor playground. There were 4 kids in attendance. The Fifth Sunday of the month was a youth led church service. Kids ranging from 1st grade - 4th grade read the lessons, prayers, and made announcements. The confirmation kids assisted Pastor with the Sermon. Janet Williams, with the help of the youth, led the congregation in singing VBS/ Lutherhaven songs throughout the service. The kids were so excited (and nervous) to be involved during worship

9 Serving NEXT Sunday February 21, 2016 What would YOU like to do? Here s an idea! Make a positive impact on the Sunday experience of all who enter here! Serve as an Usher! Ushering is an opportunity to serve God by serving His people, and is a marvelous way to actively and faithfully participate in the life at Emmanuel. Ushers see to it that the services flow smoothly and orderly, thus heightening the mood to receive God s Word. Ushering provides a wonderful way to begin to grow and to continue to serve in a very important role for the church. The role of the usher frequently is underestimated for its importance. Good ushers are people-persons who make people coming into the church feel welcome and appreciated. In doing so, ushers contribute greatly to making everyone s church experience a positive one. In many ways, the ushers are the face of the church, the first ones that people see when they arrive and the last ones they see as they leave. It is important that an usher be friendly, honest, and willing to serve. It is an honorable position, requiring integrity, cordiality, and wisdom. The heart of an usher is the heart of a servant, and he does his work for his Lord Jesus (Colossians 3:24). A church usher has a true love for the people of the church and a desire to promote an atmosphere of reverence and worship in the house of God. An usher s theme verse could very well be Psalm 84:10, I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. There are many ways to be involved in the ministries at Emmanuel. Just let us know what you hold interest in, what your gifts are, what you like to do! Your help is always needed and appreciated!
