2 From Pastor s Desk Both Sides of the Tapestry Our Purpose: We believe God s purpose for our church is to bring the light of God to all through the prism of Jesus. Our Guiding Principles: 1. We place God above all, recognizing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. 2. We proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through words and deeds. 3. We invite, welcome and value everyone as a child of God. 4. We are instruments of God s love and grace, caring for and ministering to all. 5. We grow in faith through prayer, worship, bible study and fellowship. 6. We are responsible stewards of God s crea on. Our Mission: We, the body of Christ at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, proclaim the crucified and risen Christ. Our mission is to extend the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through worship, outreach, fellowship, teaching, and love to God s children locally and world wide. 2 Dear People of God, into church with his parents, he saw that tapestry from re is an old story that outside the window. 3 Our Final Chapters in the Book of Glory Study Join in on the last few chapters of our current Adult Class, Gospel of John Book of Glory, with Jack Kelly, 8:30 a.m., in the Fellowship Hall. REMINDER: deadline for the May 2014 Emphasis is noon on Friday, April 18, We con nue our study of Gospel of John "Book of Glory," in our Sunday Adult Class on April 6, with the Execu on of Jesus (John 19:16b 42) Dr. Craig Koester, in Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel, writes: "One of the most basic ques ons in Chris an theology is: Why did Jesus die?" Later he provides the answer: "Put very simply, John understands that Jesus died to reveal God's love to the world." Lutheran theology is a "theology of the cross" which means that in the cross of Jesus Christ God most deeply expresses infinite love for humankind and the crea on. Another Chris an writer not Lutheran writes: " theology of the cross is first of all a statement about God... God thinks humankind and the whole crea on so good, so beau ful, so precious in its inten on and its poten ality, that its actualiza on, its fulfillment, its redemp on is worth dying for." (Douglas John Hall, Cross in Our Context) JSBach, in his "Passion According to St. John," has the choir sing yet another chorale, this one as the crucifixion comes nearer: "Through your imprisonment, Son of God/freedom has come to us; Your dungeon is the throne of grace/the refuge of all the devout; For had you not entered into servitude, Our servitude would had had to be everlas ng." Join us Sunday, April 6, at 8:30am in the Library. n next week, on Palm Sunday, we will conclude our conversa ons by considering John the chapters of Resurrec on! Prayer Pieces All Are Welcome! Thank you!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you, Tom Stroschein, for the love and care you give in maintaining our church van! Exactly one year ago my life was turned upside down due to a serious accident. My life was affected in so many ways. In fact, I was certain that it would never return as it was prior. Yet, as much of a struggle as it was, members of Emmanuel church were with me at every turn with love, empathy and prayer. Each one made the load I was carrying just a li le lighter and more tolerable over the 112 days I was hospitalized. So many of you offered and helped with Maya, my service dog which meant so much to both of us. Life was daun ng once I returned home and your thoughts, prayers and assistance con nued. Realizing the importance of an accessible van in my daily living, many of you again stepped forward. With help from a fundraiser at our church, the generosity of fellow church members, and Latah County Thrivent for Lutherans, I was able to purchase a factory modified van which should serve me many years. This wonderful surprise contributes toward my independence in so many ways, allowing me to live a "normal" life on my own. Your encouragement con nues to mean so much to me as I now fight to eliminate an addic on to pain medica ons. I thank the Lord each day for having given me such compassionate friends within the Lutheran faith. At the me of my accident I was on an errand for the first annual Emmanuel Lutheran Preschool Spaghe Feed, a program close to my heart. I encourage all to buy a cket or donate to this year's feed and a end. All of the proceeds go directly to scholarships for children of needy families at our preschool. 10 From Prez... Thank you to everyone who on a month by month basis. you. completed and returned their Servant Strengths form, pledge card, and simply giving form. More than 60 "families" returned forms. Great! I know that in the past we've gone through this exercise of telling church leadership what we'd be happy to help with, only to never be contacted. I have been harping to council and others that this me around we have to make that conscious effort to not let that happen again. You can help too. If you don't get a call, be proac ve. Really, it's okay if you volunteer to do something. We saw about a 20% jump in the number of simply givers. Great! Two thirds of the folks who pledged are now also simply givers. Great! We meet our budget Those that use simply giving help our treasurer know what to expect each month, and having a more consistent level of giving, especially during the summer, helps us meet our ministry and mission work during those tradi onally "leaner" months. And, those pledge cards... what about them? Well, they help all of us take me to reflect on our many blessings and how we will respond to God's extravagance. conscious effort of filling it out makes us mindful, improves our discipline. And, if we do this consistently, it would aid Church Council and the Finance Commi ee in formula ng annual budgets. If you haven't turned in your forms, please do so. We can't be whole without Remembering, we are "Riding the Wave" during Lent. We are taking this me to ponder our bap sm. "Ride the Wave" is our theme for the next few weeks, thanks to the Stewardship Task Force. It's another step in our 18 month stewardship journey. During Lent we'll be focusing on what it means to be bap zed. We've already heard about it from the pulpit, during Lenten worship, and even during J.A.M. (expect more). We'll be riding that wave un l late April / early May when it culminates with a special focus on the precious water of the Palouse, led by Jon Kimberling and Pastor Dean Stewart. Part of understanding our bap sm is realiza on of God's extravagance to us. Bap sm and its promise is just one of the ways God rains down blessings on us. Blessings of me, talents, and treasures. And the Construc on/ Building/Bathroom Commi ee is about ready to start renova ng the downstairs bathrooms. y plan to start with the men's side and complete the women's side a er Preschool and VBS adjourn for the summer and plant to be done before the fall schedule starts. y'll be looking for volunteers.
