3 How a Pancake Breakfast is MORE than a Pancake Breakfast? The answer to this question is that it will always be more because so many things happen there. 1. The pancake breakfast serves as visible presence every month at St. Philips. It is a way for families to enjoy a meal and socialize before or after mass. 2. It raises a small amount of money for the Knights. 3. The pancake breakfast is a time to meet your fellow Knights and share some fellowship. 4. It is a time when many Knights are at the same place at the same time. It is this fact where the so much more can happen at the pancake breakfast what I want to talk expound upon. When I was the Financial Secretary I realized how labor intensive the end of year billing of the Knights can be. I needed help and realized I had a great opportunity to utilize the pancake breakfast and its natural lulls to get my fellow Knights to help with the stuffing of the envelopes. It is the one time when everyone can chip in and help with a labor intensive task. It s that time again so I am reminding the Knights that your help is needed to stuff envelopes during the December pancake breakfast. You can also save us a stamp and pick up your statement. Knight Moves is on the move Last month I wrote about Knight Moves. Knight Moves is our DJ service and is another way we bring in money for our council. Its biggest benefit is that the money we make per hour worked per Knight serving is much greater than the ratio for Casino Nights. Unfortunately, we are having a harder and harder time getting Knights to help at the Casino Nights. One solution to this problem is to reduce the Casino Nights but makeup the deficit with Knight Moves. Knight Moves also has the benefit in that is can be utilized all year whereas the Casino Nights are busiest at the end of the year. We would like to ramp up Knight Moves and we have some exciting ideas to get this done. I would like to share these ideas with you at the pancake breakfast. This is how a pancake breakfast is MORE than a Pancake Breakfast. Come, join us! Fraternally, SK Steven Robillard, Deputy Grand Knight

5 The next Greet The Troops will be Saturday, January 29. POC: SK Bob LaCroix, GK For additional help, call Donna Cranston, the on-site coordinator. Donna Cranston Meet and Greet Coordinator DFW Airport, Texas Our next major Urban Knights Entertainment event will be on Saturday, January 15, at St Joseph Catholic Church in Arlington hosted by Council dealers are needed. The event runs 7:00-10:00PM. PoC: Bill Miller, Casino Ops Mgr Supporting our Parish Partners St. Philip Men s ACTS Retreat Coming February 3-6, 2011 Mark your calendars now before the busy holiday season hits full force. While our formal sign-up weekends have not yet been announced, you may pre-register to attend by contacting fellow Knights on the team organizing this great Thursday evening to Sunday morning event: Greg Walterscheid, Bob Dubek, LJ, John Bowen, Dan Jacobs, Boyd Burris, Mike Boland, Marco Melara, Johnny Strange, Vince Zawlocki, Chuck Bimmerle, Pat Laubacher, Pat Quinn, and Sean Weber. Other Knights who can be contacted for general information include Bill Miller, Steve Robillard, Mario Covarrubias Jr., Eddie Martinez, Kevin Mahl and Steve Kline. PoC: Greg Walterscheid, Director ACTS Team Feb 2011gwalterscheid@conleygroup.com In time for the season of the birth of Jesus, here s an excellent Catholic website that is an all purpose site. Crossroads brings together access to quite a number of resources, such as news links, the liturgical calendar, faith study tools, you name it and they probably have a link for it. Check it out. PoC: LJ, KofC9884@gmail.com A Return to Yesteryear Some men of St. Philip have started a trend of dressing up a bit when attending Mass. This means that they are wearing a nice collared shirt with a sports jacket or a shirt and tie or even a full dress suit. Let us, as Knights, follow this example, to show our fellow parishioners that attending Mass is not just a stop-over on the way to some other activity, but is the activity unto itself. 6 The Cloud-9 Salon Fashion show Casino was a unique experience, one that, I might think, will be talked about for years to come. I hope we get invited back next year. Their program, which ran from five in the afternoon until 2:00AM, was to raise $100,000 for three of their charities. They had over 100 models including celebrities and some 30 sponsors for this eighth annual fund raiser. We dealt from about 10:15 pm to 12:45 am; and we had a some what wild crowd as you might guess since they ve been partying since five. Anyway all the tables, dice and roulette were full all night to our delight and had fund dealing. One surprising exception was no one played Texas Hold em, no offense to Chuck or Bob. Rich and Brian brought the trailer while Jay was cruising in the Caribbean, but we had lots of help with set up, so thanks to all who showed up early to do the hard work. The fact is we were there about 7pm but could not get into the dealing space until about 8pm, but that was OK because we had time to have a bit to eat and mingle in the dazzling crowd and to see some of the fashion show, of which our own Eddie Martinez took a part. Many thanks as always go out to our 27-dealers (twoshort). 7 The Respect for Life Corner Some thoughts to ponder from the National Catholic Register : Advent calls to mind the centuries of expectation for the Messiah, but also focuses on the expectant Blessed Virgin Mary. In its observance of the days leading up to Christmas, the Church implicitly recognizes that an unborn child is a human being, a person with the same dignity as anyone who has already been born. Christ once was an embryo, a fetus, an unborn child. He who died on the cross to save mankind is the same person who was conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As Christ is in our midst from the moment of the Annunciation, a woman who is pregnant for the first time is already a mother. The Respect for Life Corner (Cont'd) In closing this Advent column, let me give you some numbers to think about.there are approximately 67 million Catholics in America. It takes 51 million voters to elect the President think about it Your Brother Knight in Christ, John Bowen, , jbowen76@verizon.net. This year s midterm elections gave Catholic Americans some reasons to be grateful. The House of Representatives has more pro life members than ever, and that gives us some reasons for hope. We can hope not only that votes on life issues go somewhat better, but also that a growing pro life caucus in Congress gives the pro life movement more credibility in Washington. But we know from experience that it s unwise to put one s hope totally in politics and politicians. Candidates who ran on messages of change, promising to not be like career politicians, often end up being career politicians. Freshman congressmen with ideals of doing what s best for America and not being beholden to special interests often run up against the reality of having to compromise principles. O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life: Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. (John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae). CCA Toy Store Set-up/Pick-up I want to thank the army of men (& a lady) who showed up at CCA early on Saturday 11/18 to help with this year's toy store set-up. Once again, with all the help that was provided, we were able to get out of there in an hour once we got started. Those deserving of gratitude are: Bob & Beth LaCroix, Steven Robillard, Brian Friesenhahn, Gene Holder, Rich Murchek, Bob Dubek, Ken Wischnewsky, Ken & Kevin Himel, Juan Sandoval, Thuoc Nguyen, Rich Lubke, Joe Walker, Chuck Berneche & Steve Schweiger. Thanks to your hard work, this Christmas season will be quite enjoyable for hundreds of local kids. As a reminder, and while I'm thankful to have a nearly full schedule of nightly Vista Ridge Mall toy pickups this month, I can always make room for a few more volunteers if you'd like to take part. 8 Knight-Light Charities In October and November, Knight-Light Charities, the 501(c)3 non-profit charitable body that grew from Council 9884 s Homeless Program of the 1990s, continued its mission to provide immediate financial relief for area individuals who find themselves with crisis needs. When notified by CCA in October that a 62-year-old man had been disabled and faced eviction, Knight- Light Charities quickly stepped in with $530 for rent to keep the man in his apartment while local agencies worked out financial aid for him. In early November, a local veteran s G.I. bill checks ended, causing him to fall behind in his rent payments before he could start his new job. CCA turned to Knight-Light Charities to help assist this veteran with $465 for rent. Also in November, the Salvation Army of Lewisville alerted Knight-Light Charities to the dire circumstances of an elderly couple who served as the sole guardians of two small grandchildren. The grandfather was very sick with cancer, an illness that the grandmother wished to care for at home. With their savings nearly exhausted, the elderly couple needed help with their rent, and Knight-Light Charities was able to provide $650 for November rent, and we will also provide $650 for rent in December. As the holiday season draws near as well as throughout the entire year, Knight-Light Charities continues to strive to exemplify the first principle of the Knights of Columbus: charity. For more information about Knight-Light Charities and for ways to make a contribution, visit PoC: Mike Crivello, macrivello@hotmail.com Bishops Pickup The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) meets bi-annually in February in the Dallas area.
