2 Brothers and Sisters, Grand Knight s Report I hope this newsletter finds everyone safe and sound after their Thanksgiving travels. The Advent Season is now upon us as we all patiently await the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Reason for the Season! In the spirit of Christmas, always remember to share your blessings and may all of you have a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. Fraternally, Joe Walker, GK Council 9884 Christmas Party EVERYONE is invited to the Councils annual Christmas party! It will be held at the CLC on the Third Thursday of the month in place of a planning meeting this month (December 17 th ), this year I ve decided to start it a little earlier, at 6:30pm in order to make it easier with families to attend on a school night! While it s free to all Council members and their families, please RSVP to me by Saturday December 12th at GK9884@gmail.com or I ll also be sending out an e-vite to all the folks on the electronic distribution so it ll be ultra-easy. I m recommending Christmas Casual as dress, but the main thing is to come ready to have fun. We will be also having an optional white elephant gift exchange so if you would like to participate simply bring an inexpensive gift of your choosing. Hope to see you there and have a merry Christmas! Joe Walker, GK. Vista Ridge Mall, (K)nightly toy pick-up Toy collection at Vista Ridge Mall started Friday 27 November. 5 In the Pro-Life Corner In light of the fact that I m new to the Knights; this year, and new to the Pro-Life chair; this month, let me start by introducing myself.i m John Bowen and have been a member of St Philip s since moving here with my wife (Jan) and 2 children (Katie, 26/ Sean, 24) in 1993 from Raleigh, N.C. I m retired from the Air Force and am currently a pilot with American Airlines. Being new to this position I d like to take the next month to organize my thoughts on the Pro-Life program for our council and would certainly appreciate hearing from members on your ideas for developing a meaningful program. Presently, the only ongoing event we have is the first- Saturday (8:30AM) Pro-life rosary in the Mary Garden which I would encourage all to continue to support. The good news is that a recent Marist Poll shows Americans continuing to move toward Pro-Life position on abortion: 86 percent favor significant restrictions; a majority believes abortion hurts a woman long-term. The bad news is that the fight on Capitol Hill over abortion funding in the health care legislation is far from over. Fortunately, our TX reps are all pro-life oriented but that does not preclude us from praying for our Bishops pro-life provisions being adopted by the other members of Congress. Please keep this intention in your daily prayers. Use this URL for more details on the Marist Poll Questions and Responses. documents/poll_abortion_ pdf Although abortion usually, and rightly so, gets most attention, there s other issues like the death penalty, endof-life issues and health care reform that directly impact Catholic moral teaching. Since the support and strengthening of the family is one of the core tenets of being a Knight, let s work together to build an active pro-life program for our council. Other local councils are involved in prayer vigils at abortion mills which is something I d like you to think about so we can discuss it at a future meeting. The Hike for Life Texas is another program we may want to consider. If anyone knows of other pro-life activities, or would like to help me in developing a program, please let me know. In the meantime, if you have any thoughts on these or other ideas, please contact me at jandjbowen@verizon.net Your Brother Knight in Christ, John Bowen Jer 1:5- Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you MEMBERSHIP IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS! I want to thank our Worthy Grand Knight for having the faith in me to appoint me Membership Director for the Council. As Director, my primary responsibility is to work toward the overall success of our Council and the Order. All of our Council Officers and Directors share this common goal, but we concentrate on different areas. Directors cannot be successful by themselves. We need to establish plans and solicit the help of the membership. Our members ensure the success of the Council through active participation in our events. The Membership Directorship is no different. Our primary events include recruitment drives, home visits, 1 st degree ceremonies, recognition of outstanding participation, and celebrating our successes. But that s not all. It involves working with our Admissions Committee and Insurance Agent. It also encourages members to advance to the Major Degrees and ultimately the Fourth Degree. All Brother Knights have an obligation to help the Council and Order grow. I m just a catalyst. Let me offer the following as to how you can participate right away: 1. Wear your name tag to Church. Be proud to be a Knight! Someone may join because you joined! 2. Volunteer to be a home visit member. Never done it before? No problem. We ll team you up with a veteran! 3. Come to a 1 st Degree Ceremony to support the new members! Here is the calendar of upcoming Recruitment Drives and Degrees. I ll update this each month. Recruitment 1 st Major Degrees Drives St Philip s 1/22-23-St. 2/20-St 1/10/2010- Philip s 4/10-11-St. Philip s Philip s-9am 3/18-St Philip s- 6:30pm Ennis 3/21/2010- Richardson Cathy & I hope you all had a very Happy Thanksgiving and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! 6 Newsletter Alert: Going Green and saving some Greenback$ As I first announced in the September issue of Knight Lines, over the next fraternal year, we are ramping down the number of physically printed and regular mail copies of this newsletter. The reason for this is because of the ever increasing cost of postage and printing we are actually spending well over $2000 every year just to print and mail this newsletter, that s a significant amount of money that could be focused on more charitable items every year. A second reason, is because of the physical costs of printing, it limits some of the content that we can add, because the longer the newsletter or more pictures we add the more it costs to print and mail, and, last, let us not forget that if the newsletter runs 5 sheets of paper and we mail over 200 copies. That s 1000 pieces of paper we can save every month, plus ink and other energies to send it so we are also helping the environment. Below is included a regular USPS mail opt-in form that will need to be mailed to our new worthy Newsletter editor Lawrence Jermyn at the address indicated on the form, and if you want to continue to receive the newsletter by regular mail you will need to return that note via regular mail with your current address to make sure we have the right address. If you would like to change to electronic distribution you can send your address to Newsletter editor Lawrence Jermyn at KofC9884@gmail.com. If you already receive the newsletter via , you don t have to do anything! We ll continue to send physical copies to the current list of people as is through the December 2009 newsletter. Starting with the NEXT issue in January 2010, the newsletter will go electronic only and USPS mailings only to those who have sent in the opt-in form for a physical copy because they do not have ready access to or the internet. If you have any questions please let me know. 7 Shining Knight Program For new members you must: Be involved in at least 3 council activities. Attend at least 3 council business meetings. Receive their Second and Third degrees. Meet with their council s insurance representative. (just meet) For Veterans: Be involved in at least 4 council Activities Attend at least 4 council business meetings. Achieve 2 nd and 3 rd degrees (if not already 3rd degree) Recruit at least one new member. We ll track this with these cards; each event must be initialed by an Activity director, Programs director, DGK, GK, or Insurance Representative when applicable. Joe Walker, GK gk9884@gmail.com Reminder: Re-name the Casino Nights Contest As those of you who attended the June business meeting know, we have decided to rename our casino night operations in honor of one of it founders and long time operations chief, the late SK Norm Urban. The current proposal is Urban Knights Entertainment Services. I would like to announce a contest open to friends and family of Council #9884 to come up with a new logo incorporating the new name (or variation there of as long as it includes an honorarium for Norm s outstanding contributions to the council over the years). This logo will then be utilized to create pamphlets, information cards, etc to support the advertisement of the service. The entrants will be judged by the current GK, DGK, Programs Director, Trustees, and the current Casino Nights Operations committee chairs and the winner will be awarded a $100 prize. Deadline for entries has been extended to December 31, 2009 and are to be submitted to GK9884@gmail.com. They must be submitted in a computer graphic file (JPEG, GIF, TIFF, etc...) with preferably a minimum of 300 dpi. The winner and new logo will be unveiled at the Founders Day banquet in March!
